Railways reports higher loading and freight earnings during February 2022

The Indian railways ferried over 7% more goods in February 2022 compared to the same month last year. According to provisional data compiled by the Railway Ministry, total loading in February 2022 stood at 119.76 million tonnes (MT), up from 112.39 MT during February 2021.

Freight earnings accrued during the month rose by more than 10% to Rs 12,254.01 crore, up from Rs 11,120.14 crore in the same month of financial year 2020-21.

According to officials in the know, the higher loading despite a marginal dip in wagon turnaround and speed was because of a higher number of rakes and wagons being deployed for this purpose.

In all, 1344 rakes and 68763 wagons were utilised for freight loading in February 2022, up from 1264 rakes and 64091 wagons during February 2021. The Railways is also in the process of procuring 40000 more wagons during the coming financial year 2022-23.

Coal loading, which forms almost half the total freight earnings of the Indian Railways, stood 12% higher during February 2022. Coal loading for February 2022 stood at 55.71 MT, up from 49.79 MT during February 2021.

But all parameters did not report a rise. Port Traffic reported a decline during February 2022. On an average, the Indian Railways deployed 275 Rakes (157 for loading and 118 for unloading) during February 2022. This is down from an average 290 Rakes (162 for loading and 128 for unloading) deployed during February 2021.

The Passenger Business Segment continued to trail the comparable pre-pandemic period of February 2020. Total Revenue from Passenger Segment stood at Rs 4,189.50 crores in February 2022, 6.38 per cent lower than the Rs 4,475.20 crores reported in February 2020. Revenue from the passenger segment during February 2021 had stood at Rs 3,022.20 crores.
