Russia Ukraine Crisis: Ukraine has rejected Russian suggestions that it was refusing to negotiate a ceasefire but said it was not ready to accept unacceptable conditions

Russia now has 50 per cent of its invasion force inside Ukraine, a US official said.

Street fighting raged in Ukraine's second-biggest city today after Russian forces pierced through Ukrainian lines, as both sides said they were ready for talks to halt a conflict that has forced an estimated 370,000 people to flee their homes.

  1. Ukrainian forces had secured full control of Kharkiv on Sunday following street fighting with Russian troops in the country's second-biggest city, the local governor said. "Kharkiv is fully under our control," the head of the regional administration, Oleg Sinegubov, said on Telegram, adding that the army was expelling Russian forces during a "clean-up" operation.

  2. Ukraine took Russia to the International Court of Justice in The Hague on Day 4 of the invasion. The development comes even as Russian forces hit Ukrainian cities with artillery and cruise missiles.

  3. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky turned down Moscow's offer of a meeting in Belarus, which has allowed Russian troops passage to attack Ukraine. Zelensky said Ukraine had proposed Warsaw, Bratislava, Budapest, Istanbul and Baku as possible alternative locations for any talks. Belarus is a Russian ally in the invasion.

  4. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday accused Ukrainian authorities of wasting "an opportunity" to hold talks. Reports citing an European Union official who says he has reviewed a Ukrainian intelligence report said he was "furious" and "fuming" that his military's invasion of the smaller country hasn't gone more smoothly.

  5. Ukraine is establishing a foreign "international" legion for volunteers from abroad, President Zelenskiy said in a statement today. The President has vowed to remain in the capital Kyiv and has said it remains completely under Ukraine's control.

  6. Russia's invasion force is being slowed and frustrated by unexpectedly stiff resistance from Ukrainian troops, keeping them outside Kyiv, a senior US defence official has said, according to news agency AFP. The official has said that as per information with Pentagon, Russia now has at least 50 per cent of its invasion force inside Ukraine.

  7. Germany and its Western allies have agreed to cut Russia out of the SWIFT global payment system, a spokesperson for the German government said, in a third sanctions package aimed at halting the invasion. In a dramatic policy reversal, Germany on Saturday also ramped up its backing for Ukraine's battle against Russia, approving weapons deliveries for Kyiv.

  8. Ukrainian Health Minister Viktor Lyashko yesterday said 198 civilians, including three children, had been killed in the conflict and 1,115 wounded.

  9. Around 3,500 Russian soldiers have been killed or injured so far, an adviser to Ukrainian President Zelensky said. "We are striking the enemy around Kyiv. The enemy is not moving for now," said Oleksiy Arestovych.

  10. Poland has said 100,000 refugees have crossed its border from Ukraine since Russia invaded, with the UN estimating that a similar number are internally displaced. Some 50,000 have entered Hungary and Romania with thousands more crossing into Moldova.
