Wipro GE Healthcare's upcoming plant in Bengaluru will become operational from the end of March, according to its managing director, Shravan Subramanyam. The around Rs 100-crore unit, being built under the government's production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, will manufacture machines for CT-scans, cath labs and ultrasonography, besides ventilators and patient monitors.
"We currently have three plants in India. Now through PLI we are adding a fourth manufacturing plant," Subramanyam told ET in a recent interview. GE Healthcare's three manufacturing plants operate as joint ventures with Wipro and BEL. The upcoming unit will also be launched as a joint venture with Wipro.
In GE Healthcare's total sales in India, 31% of the products are locally manufactured. More than 90% of the company's diagnostic cardiology products are made in India, while affordable care products in the maternal and infant care segment are designed, developed and made in the country.
"We invest a lot in product development here - we do product development for both India for India, and India for the world. For example, our CT scan, which has seen 3x surge (in demand) during Covid, is entirely designed in India, for India and made in India," Subramanyam said.
Wipro GE is among the nine companies selected for sops under the PLI scheme. Imaging devices made by GE for CT-scan, cath lab and ultrasonography will be eligible for PLI incentives. The government will be offering 5% incentive on incremental sales, or up to a maximum of Rs 121.00 crore per applicant per target segment.
