
At least 14 people, including four women and a five-year-old girl, were killed and one injured after a sport utility vehicle (SUV) they were travelling in fell into a gorge near Sukhidhang Reetha Sahib in Uttarakhand’s Champawat district in the early hours of Tuesday, said the police.
The accident occurred around 3 am when the victims were returning from Panchmukhi Dharamshala in Tanakpur to Danda Kaknai after attending a wedding, said Kumaon director general of police Nilesh Anand Bharne. The vehicle had 15 people in it, added the police.
According to a statement issued by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), rescue teams rushed to the spot soon after getting information about the accident, which took place between Budham and Kaknayi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased. The injured will be given Rs 50,000.
