A 36-year-old history-sheeter and matka businessman from Pune was shot dead in Satara district on Sunday evening. Satara District Police have arrested two persons and have said that the killing was the fallout of a dispute over control of Matka gambling, and also in land dealings.

Police have identified the deceased as Sanjay Patole, a resident of Bibwewadi area who allegedly ran a matka gambling business in Katraj area of Pune. Patole had been booked by Pune Police in the past in multiple cases.

Patole was found dead on the seventh-floor terrace of a building in Lake Palace Society in Shirwal area of Satara, located around 50 km from Pune City.

Satara District Superintendent of Police Ajay Kumar Bansal said, “After the incident came to light, we cordoned off a specific perimeter. Based on the initial leads, we detained two persons for questioning. Investigation has now revealed that Patole ran a matka business in Pune. We believe his murder is a fallout of dispute over supremacy in the matka business and also some land dealings. We have arrested two persons, Tabrez Sutar and Kiran Mohite, both of whom are criminals on police records in Pune and are suspected to be linked to criminal gangs.”

Bansal added, “We now know that Patole was brought to Shirwal area on some pretext. And the people who brought him here also consumed alcohol with him. They had planned to kill him by pushing him off the seventh floor terrace. But because Patole overpowered them, he was shot in the head with a country-made pistol in the scuffle that ensued. In addition to the two arrested till now, we are looking for some more suspects and hope to arrest them soon.”
