Uttar Pradesh Election 2022 LIVE Updates: As third phase votes, it's a big test for Akhilesh Yadav
Voting is underway for 59 Assembly constituencies spread across 16 districts of Uttar Pradesh. Polling started at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm. Among the key constituencies include Karhal where former chief minister and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav is contesting his maiden Assembly election.
This is the third phase of the Assembly polls in the state, where elections are to be held in seven rounds. 627 candidates are in the fray in this phase, in which over 2.15 crore people are eligible to vote. The districts where polling is being held are Hathras, Firozabad, Etah, Kasganj, Mainpuri, Farrukhabad, Kannauj, Etawah, Auraiya, Kanpur Dehat, Kanpur Nagar, Jalaun, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Hamirpur and Mahoba.
52 General Observers, 16 Police Observers and 19 Expenditure Observers have also been deployed by the Commission to keep an eye on the polling. Apart from this, 2235 Sector Magistrates, 273 Zonal Magistrates, 832 Static Magistrates and 3069 Micro Observers have also been deployed. In the third phase, there will be 641 model polling stations and 129 all women workers polling places.
The BJP has pitted Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Law and Justice Satya Pal Singh Baghel against Akhilesh Yadav. Akhilesh's uncle and Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohia) supremo Shivpal Singh Yadav is contesting from Jaswantnagar seat. Voting for the remaining four phases of the seven-phase UP elections will take place on February 23, 27 and March 3 and 7. The counting of votes will take place on March 10

Vote out BJP for giving false promises: Mayawati
BSP chief Mayawati urged people to vote out the ruling party BJP for giving false promises of providing them employment. "The biggest failure of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) is not being able to provide employment to the people. Myth of Mainpuri being 'Yadavland' will break: SP Singh Baghel
Union minister SP Singh Baghel, who is contesting against Akhilesh Yadav from Karhal seat in Mainpuri, said that the myth of Mainpuri being a 'Yadavland' will break during the assembly polls in the state. With a strong Yadav population, Karhal has for three decades been an SP fortress. Baghel said that referring to Mainpuri as a 'Yadavland' is disrespectful towards communities of Brahmins, Rathores, Darji (tailor), Sunnar (goldsmith), Diwakars etc.

Why Akhilesh, Baghel won't vote for themselves
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav is pitted against Union Minister SP Singh Baghel in the Karhal Assembly seat in Mainpuri. But they will not be casting a vote for themselves in their constituency. That is because Akhilesh Yadav is a registered voter in Jaswant Nagar in Etawah district, from where his uncle Shivpal Yadav is contesting. And Baghel is from Agra, where voting took place in the first phase of the elections.
SP will get a majority by 4th phase: Ram Gopal Yadav
- Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav claims the the party will get a clear majority in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections by the fourth phase.
- SP will get 100 seats in the first phase, 150 by the third phase and will cross the 203 mark after the fourth, he said.
- Akhilesh Yadav will win by a margin of 1.5 lakh votes from Karhal, and BJP's SP Singh Baghel will lose his security deposit, je said.

Samajwadi Party alleges discrepancies in VVPAT
- The Samajwadi Party alleged discrepancies in the EVMs, claiming that the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) issued a slip of the BJP as the voter cast his vote to the former.
- The party complained about the "defective" VVPAT at 228 Vidhan Sabha of Hamirpur District, Booth Number 432.
- SP asked the Election Commission to take cognisance of the matter and ensure "smooth and fair voting".

Louise Khurshid contesting from Farrukhabad Sadar

The 16 districts which will go to polls in the third phase of Assembly elections are Jhansi, Kanpur Dehat, Kannauj, Auriyya, Etah, Etawah, Farukkhabad, Firozabad, Hamirpur, Hathras, Jalaun, Kanpur Nagar, Kasganj, Lalitpur, Mahoba and Mainpuri.
