Italian automaker Piaggio is developing electric scooters for the Indian market and will take up to two years to launch them as it wants to make a business case for its products even after subsidies are removed, a top executive said.

Piaggio, the maker of Vespa and Aprilia scooters, sells electric three-wheelers in India and wants to use its learnings around battery swapping and portable batteries for its planned India-specific two-wheelers.

Diego Graffi, MD of Piaggio India, told ET that the company wants to have a sustainable business case for its electric scooters without subsidies. "We are interested in providing customers a solution in the two-wheeler space that (makes sense) even beyond the effect of subsidies," Graffi said.
