Eleven of the convicts were handed life sentences. 28 among the accused were acquitted.

As many as 56 people had been killed in the blasts that had rocked the state's commercial hub and ravaged buses, markets and other public places. Hundred had been left wounded.

On February 8, the special court had convicted 49 people over the coordinated attacks. The trial against 77 accused in the case (78 accused in total, of whom one later turned approver) had concluded in September 2021.

The blasts had occurred on July 26, 2008, with 20 bombs going off in a span of 70 minutes. Targets included the govt civil hospital and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation-run LG Hospital, as well as parked cars and bicycles.

Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami, a terror outfit, had subsequently claimed responsibility for the attacks.
