The Tamil Nadu government re-opened Nursery schools across the state on Wednesday after reporting a decline in the number of Coronavirus infections. The Nursery schools have opened after a gap of almost two years with the government insisting that masks will not be mandatory for kindergarten children, as per a PTI report.
Meanwhile, India on Wednesday morning reported 30,615 new Covid-19 cases and 514 deaths, according to the official data shared by the Ministry of Health. The number of new infections recorded today was 11% higher than Tuesday’s daily Covid numbers. The country had on Tuesday morning recorded 27,409 infections. According to the official data updated at 8am today, the death toll in the country reached 5,09,872 with 514 fresh fatalities. The daily Covid-19 cases recorded were less than one lakh for ten consecutive days. The Health Ministry has revealed that the active cases comprise 0.87 per cent of the total infections, while the recovery rate has improved to 97.94 per cent.
India has recorded a total of 5,09,872 deaths so far including 1,43,451 from Maharashtra, 62,681 from Kerala, 39,691 from Karnataka, 37,946 from Tamil Nadu, 26,081 from Delhi, 23,404 from Uttar Pradesh and 21,061 from West Bengal, as per a PTI report. The Health Ministry had earlier stated that more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities. “Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research,” the Ministry said on its website, adding that state-wise figures are subject to verification.
Assam on Tuesday became the first state in India to withdraw all Covid-related curbs. The state has now fully returned to normalcy. According to a PTI report, all restrictions related to night curfew, re-opening of educational institutions etc. were lifted from 6AM on Tuesday. However, basic practice of wearing masks and keeping social distance in public, will still be followed.

Ladakh reported 58 fresh Covid cases, taking the infection tally to 27,594, officials said on Wednesday. The number of active cases stands at 523, including 404 in Leh and 119 cases in Kargil, they said. The Union Territory has recorded 227 Covid-related deaths — 168 in Leh and 59 in Kargil, they said. No death was reported on Tuesday, officials said. As many as 57 patients, 34 in Leh and 23 in Kargil, were cured and discharged from hospitals, taking the overall recoveries to 26,844, they said. Of the 58 new cases, 43 were from Leh and 15 from Kargil, officials said, adding that a total of 1,193 sample reports in Ladakh were found negative. PTI

The Biden administration is telling Congress that it needs an additional USD 30 billion to press ahead with the fight against COVID-19, officials said. Two people familiar with the administration's plan confirmed key details on Tuesday: USD 17.9 billion for vaccines and treatments, USD 4.9 billion for testing, USD 3 billion to cover coronavirus care for uninsured people, and USD 3.7 billion to prepare for future variants. They spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss deliberations between the administration and lawmakers over the supplemental funding. AP
Nineteen coronavirus patients, including a teenager, have died in Odisha and 852 people tested positive for the pathogen, the Health Department said on Wednesday. The daily positivity rate was 1.38 per cent and 181 children were among those newly infected. (PTI)
Chancellor Olaf Scholz is conferring with Germany's 16 state governors Wednesday to map a way out of coronavirus restrictions as official figures show new infections beginning to drift downward. Germany saw infections caused by the omicron variant, which is highly contagious but generally causes milder illness than previous variants, surge later than in several other European countries. Officials have attributed this to restrictions that include curbs on private gatherings, the closure of night clubs and requirements for people to show proof of vaccination or recovery to enter restaurants and bars. But other countries, including neighbouring Denmark, also have moved faster to lift restrictions, and there are growing calls for Germany to follow suit. (AP)
Spain's Rovi has agreed a 10-year extension to its deal with Moderna to manufacture future drugs developed with the mRNA technology used for the U.S. company's coronavirus vaccine. Antibodies produced by immune cells become steadily more formidable and precisely targeted against the SARS-CoV-2 virus for at least six months after COVID-19 vaccination, according to a study. The researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in the US assessed the antibody response to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in detail in people. The findings, published on Tuesday in the journal Nature, suggest that declining antibody levels in the months after vaccination primarily represent a shift to a sustainable immune response. The researchers also noted that even quite low levels of antibodies would continue to provide some protection against disease, as long as the virus does not change. (PTI)
Nursery schools across Tamil Nadu reopened on Wednesday after a long gap of two years, amidst a sharp decline in coronavirus positive cases, and with the government insisting that face masks are not mandatory for kindergarten children. Teachers welcomed the students with balloons, chocolates and flowers on day one to help them cope up with a new environment. The Chinese industrial hub Suzhou on Wednesday reported new COVID-19 cases for a second day, and authorities further restricted highway access while ramping up testing, having already detected cases of the highly contagious Omicron variant. The city in the eastern province of Jiangsu reported 18 domestically transmitted cases with confirmed symptoms for Tuesday, up from eight a day earlier, the data from the National Health Commission (NHC) showed. Arunachal Pradesh's COVID-19 caseload rose to 64,110 on Wednesday after 44 more people tested positive for the infection, a senior health official said here. Of the 44 fresh cases, eight were registered from Namsai, seven from Changlang, six from the Capital Complex Region, four from Upper Siang and three each from West Kameng, Tawang and Longding district respectively, the official said. As many as 63,350 people have recuperated from the disease so far including, 117 on Tuesday, State Surveillance Officer (SSO) Dr Lobsang Jampa said. The COVID-19 death toll in the frontier state remained at 294 as no fresh fatality was reported in the last 24 hours, the official said. (PTI)

With the addition of 109 fresh coronavirus positive cases, the infection count in Thane district of Maharashtra mounted to 7,07,425, an official said on Wednesday. These new cases were reported on Tuesday, he said. As the virus claimed the life of three patients, the death toll in the district rose to 11,852. The mortality rate is 1.67 per cent, he added. In neighboring Palghar district, the COVID-19 case count has gone up to 1,63,168 while the death toll is 3,390, a local official added. (PTI)
South Korea on Wednesday reported a daily record of 90,443 new coronavirus cases, as numbers nearly doubled within a week amid the spread of the highly infectious Omicron variant. The record count for Tuesday marked a drastic surge from 57,177 a day before and brought total infections in the country since the pandemic began to 1,552,851. Deaths remain comparatively low, though, with 39 fatalities on Tuesday and a total of 7,202 so far, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA). (Reuters)

Seven more people died from coronavirus in Singapore, which reported a record daily count of 19,420 cases. The infected included 241 people who came from abroad. Seven fatalities were recorded on Tuesday, taking the death toll from coronavirus complications to 913, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH). Till Tuesday, Singapore has recorded 497,997 COVID-19 cases. Rapid antigen tests detected 16,102 infections. (PTI)

Andaman and Nicobar Islands recorded four new COVID-19 cases, pushing the tally in the union territory to 9,985, a health department official said on Wednesday. Eighteen more people recovered from COVID-19, taking the total number of recoveries to 9,753, he said. The archipelago now has 103 active COVID-19 cases, the official said. (PTI)
