Delhi Live News: Delhi reported 766 Covid-19 cases along with five fatalities, while the positivity rate marginally declined to 1.37 per cent, according to data shared by the Health Department on Wednesday. With this, the national capital’s case count increased to 18,53,428 and the death toll climbed to 26,086, the latest health bulletin stated.

Meanwhile, on the occasion of Ravidas Jayanti, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday offered prayers and participated in the ‘Shabad Kirtan’ at the Shri Guru Ravidas Vishram Dham Mandir in New Delhi’s Karol Bagh.

Earlier, an unidentified man was detained from National Security Advisor Ajit Doval’s residence on Wednesday at 7.30 am. The man was stopped by the security personnel and said that someone had implanted magnetic chip on his body. However, after conducting an MRI test, nothing was found. Officials from intelligence agencies along with Delhi police are questioning him.

Over 1,500 ticket aspirants in Cong for Delhi municipal polls

The Delhi Congress has received over 1,500 applications from its leaders and workers for contesting the municipal corporation election in the national capital, which is expected to be held in April.

Party leaders said there was a lot of enthusiasm among the workers, who were turning up in large numbers to submit the applications at the Delhi Congress headquarters -- Rajiv Bhawan -- and at the district unit offices.

"Over 1,500 applications have so far been received and in view of the enthusiasm among the party leaders and workers, the last date for submitting the applications has been extended by two more days," a senior Congress leader said.

Delhi Congress communication department vice-chairman Parvez Alam said the deadline has been extended till 6 pm on February 18. Earlier, the last date was fixed on February 16 for the exercise that commenced on February 2. (PTI)

Some DU students challenge physical classes, HC says high time to open

The Delhi High Court Wednesday declined to interfere with Delhi University’s decision to hold examinations for the even semester in physical mode from May 2022, and asked the varsity to inform it whether hybrid classes would continue after the physical reopening.

Four students, who hail from Chattisgarh, Kerala, Maharashtra and Karnataka, have challenged the orders issued by DU for the resumption of physical classes from Thursday and also the decision to hold examinations in physical mode from May. The petition states that over 700 students pray for relief. Read more

With this, the national capital's case count increased to 18,53,428 and the death toll climbed to 26,086, the latest health bulletin stated.

Delhi on Tuesday reported 756 fresh COVID-19 cases and five deaths, while the positivity rate stood at 1.52 per cent. The number of COVID-19 tests conducted a day ago stood at 56,112, it said. (PTI)

Deep Sidhu death: Police say they have identified truck driver, expect arrest soon

A board of three doctors Wednesday conducted a post-mortem examination of Punjab actor and activist Deep Sidhu’s body at Sonipat’s civil hospital. The body was handed over to his family members afterwards.

Sidhu, who shot into the limelight following the Red Fort violence during the farmers’ rally on Republic Day last year, was driving a Mahindra Scorpio that crashed into the back of a truck on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) highway. His friend Reena Rai, who was accompanying him from Delhi to Punjab at the time, survived. Read more

Ghaziabad hijab protest: Videos emerge of cops beating up women, police say ‘they attacked first’

Days after the Ghaziabad police booked a group of women for protesting against the Karnataka hijab curbs in Khoda Colony, videos of police personnel lathi-charging the women have emerged on social media. The police have claimed the protesters “attacked” the personnel first.

On Sunday afternoon, a group of women protested against the curbs and demanded that authorities should not infringe on their right to wear hijabs in schools and other institutions. The women were later dispersed by the police. A case was registered against the protesters for attacking police personnel, obstructing them in duty and holding a protest without permission. Target to ensure 25% women in force by 2025: Delhi Police chief

Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana on Wednesday said his department intends to increase the strength of women in the force to one-fourth of its total strength by 2025. He said the Delhi Police has also taken up several community outreach initiatives, particularly skill training for the youth.

Addressing the gathering on the Delhi Police Raising Day, Asthana said, “The safety of women and vulnerable sections is a top priority for the Delhi Police. With the blessings of the home ministry, our target is to raise the participation of women police personnel to one-fourth of the total strength by 2025.”

“The Delhi Police has always risen to the occasion and proved itself in every field. A total of 79 police personnel lost their lives during COVID-19. The Delhi Police remained on the frontline with doctors and health workers and provided all possible assistance to citizenry going beyond the call of duty,” he said. (PTI)

Delhi HC seeks ED stand on bail plea by former MD & CEO of YES Bank Rana

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought response from the Enforcement Directorate on the bail plea of former MD and CEO of YES Bank, Rana Kapoor, in a money laundering case related to the wrongful loss of Rs 466.51 crore to the bank.

Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri issued notice on Kapoor's plea and listed the case for further hearing on March 11.

Last month, the trial court had denied the relief of bail to Kapoor, noting that the allegations against him were most grave and serious in nature. The trial court had, however, granted bail to 15 other accused - B Hariharan, Abishek S Pandey, Rajendra Kumar Mangal, Raghubir Kumar Sharma, Anil Bhargava, Tapsi Mahajan, Surendra Kumar Khandelwal, Sonu Chadha, Harsh Gupta, Ramesh Sharma, Pawan Kumar Agarwal, Amit Mamtani, Ashish Agarwal, Amit Kumar, and Vinod Bahety - in the case. Delhi Police to introduce ‘Smart Card Arms License’

The Delhi Police Licensing unit has decided to replace the existing arms license booklet with a ‘Smart Card Arms License’.

JCP (licensing unit) Dr O P Mishra said, “We have decided to replace the bulky arms license booklet with a smart card on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Delhi Police and Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsava. Our Delhi Police has become the first police organization in the country to introduce smart card arms licenses. The smart card is easy to carry and has inherent security features. It will be printed in house after verification of data of arms license holders.” Read more

Prosecution trying to communalise Delhi riots’ UAPA case, Khalid Saifi tells court

Founder of United Against Hate (UAH) Khalid Saifi, who is accused in a UAPA case of the northeast Delhi riots case, through his lawyer told a Delhi court Wednesday that the prosecution is attempting to communalise the narrative of the riots.

The submissions for bail were made by senior advocate Rebecca John who appeared on behalf of Saifi before Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat. The court will pronounce its order on the bail arguments after her rebuttals to the prosecution’s arguments are complete.

On allegations that Saifi attended a protest site at Jantar Mantar, John told the court, “Jantar Mantar was a protest site opened for the public, nothing secretive about it. Since times immemorial, people have gone there to air their grievances.” Read more

At around 7.30 am, a 43-year-old man was detained from outside NSA Ajit Doval's residence. He was stopped by the security personnel and said that someone has implanted a magnetic chip in his body. MRI test was conducted and nothing was found. Officials from intelligence agencies along with Delhi police are questioning him.

Amit Shah congratulates Delhi Police for its investigation of northeast Delhi riots

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday appreciated the Delhi Police for its investigation of the northeast Delhi riots and said the force should lay out a road map for the next five years and also for 25 years. He was addressing the 75th Raising Day parade of the force.

"The Delhi Police has worked hard during the northeast Delhi riots and the coronavirus pandemic. For the way the Delhi Police investigated the riot cases and presented them in court, I congratulate them," Shah said.

The minister said the Delhi Police faces several difficulties and being the police force of the national capital, it has several duties that include providing security to dignitaries, ensuring that various programmes happen without glitches and other law and order related matters.

"Whenever any event happens at an international level, its repercussions are also felt in Delhi. The police also has the job of monitoring the situation here," he said. ---PTI

Uphaar evidence tampering case: HC rejects plea of Ansal brothers for suspension of jail term

Delhi High Court on Wednesday dismissed the applications of real estate barons Sushil and Gopal Ansal for suspension of sentence in the Uphaar cinema evidence tampering case. Ansal brothers had sought suspension of their seven-year jail term. Justice Subramonium Prasad on Wednesday said that their applications have been rejected.

Delhi: EDMC extends property tax amnesty scheme till March 31

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has extended the last date for the amnesty scheme for paying property tax from February 15 to March 31. Under the amnesty scheme, 100 per cent rebate on interest and penalty will be given on payment of outstanding property tax, said EDMC mayor Shyam Sunder Aggarwal.  Read more

Delhi logs 756 new Covid-19 cases

Delhi on Tuesday recorded 756 fresh Covid-19 cases and five deaths, according to the city’s health department. With new infections, Delhi’s positivity rate stood at 1.52 per cent. The day also witnessed 830 people recovering from the infection.

Delhi: Pollutant study gets underway

A source apportionment study is underway for air pollutants in Delhi, spearheaded by a team from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.

The project, called ‘real-time source apportionment study and pollution forecasting’, was approved by the Delhi Cabinet last year, and the Delhi government had signed a memorandum of understanding with IIT-Kanpur for the study.

The project is expected to help pinpoint sources of air pollutants in the city. It is meant to gauge the contribution of different sources like vehicular emissions, biomass burning, stubble burning, dust and industrial emissions to air pollution in Delhi. The pollution forecasting system is likely to provide hourly, daily and weekly forecasts on air pollution.

No prior experience needed for women who want to drive DTC buses

To encourage more women to take up driving jobs, the transport department has decided to provide relaxation in eligibility criteria for women who want to join the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) as well as cluster bus services run by the DIMTS. Under the new scheme, women need not have any prior experience to apply for the post.

‘Not a simple case of cycle theft’: Gurgaon court rejects IPS officer’s anticipatory bail plea

A district court in Gurgaon Monday dismissed the anticipatory bail of IPS officer Dheeraj Setia, against whom the Prevention of Corruption Act has been invoked, in a multi-crore heist case in Gurgaon.

While dismissing his bail petition, the Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ), Amit Sahrawat, in an order on Monday, said the extent of influence exercised by him over his subordinates to hush up the case may not be scaled unless the petitioner is interrogated.
