Recap of Day 1
India wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan became the most expensive player in the IPL 2022 auction after Mumbai Indians secured his service for Rs 15.25 crore. Allrounder Deepak Chahar returned to Chennai but for a whopping sum of Rs 14 crore after an intense bidding war. Earlier, it was Shreyas Iyer, who also predictably, became one of the highest-paid players among the marquee set with Kolkata Knight Riders making a bid of Rs 12.25 crore. Iyer’s entry in KKR ensures a captaincy candidate for them while the Shah Rukh Khan co-owned franchise also got back their Australian pace spearhead Pat Cummins for half the price at Rs 7.25 crore. One of the expected big buys was pacer Avesh Khan, who was bought by Lucknow Super Giants for Rs 10 crore, the highest in the history of IPL for uncapped players.
One of the biggest gainers was South African pacer Kagiso Rabada who fetched more than a million-dollar with Punjab Kings successfully buying him for Rs 9.25 crore. As it was known, senior India players had some great bids going their way with Shikhar Dhawan getting Rs 8.25 crore from Punjab Kings. R Ashwin also got Rs 5 crore winning bid from Rajasthan Royals while Trent Boult, with his left-arm swing bowling, laughed his way to the bank with a handsome Rs 8 crore bid from Rajasthan Royals. Mohamed Shami was taken by Gujarat Titans for Rs 6.75 crore, the same amount that Lucknow Giants paid for Quinton de Kock.
Marnus Labuschagne, Eoin Morgan, Aaron Finch, Saurabh Tiwari, and Cheteshwar Pujara finds no buyers.
Mandeep Singh is sold to Delhi Capitals for Rs 1.1 crore. Lucknow Super Giants made the first move. Capitals and Super Giants tussled for Mandeep as the bid reaches 1 crore. Delhi takes it up to 1.1 crores, Lucknow are out.
England batter Dawid Malan enters at Rs 1.5 crore and remains unsold.
Ajinkya Rahane is sold to Kolkata Knight Riders on his base price of Rs 1 crore. Kolkata made the opening bid for Rahane. That's the winning bid as well.
Aiden Markram is sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 2.60 crore. It was a slow start of the day as the team owners are still gasping from the intense Day 1. The base price for the South African batter was Rs 1 crore, Punjab started the bidding, Hyderabad tagged in. Mumbai came a bit later but then pulled out.
Charu Sharma will be the auctioneer on Day 2 as well. Hugh Edmeades is yet to recover.

There was a huge round of applause for Charu Sharma, who took over as the auctioneer at the Indian Premier League 2022 auction on Saturday after auctioneer Hugh Edmeades, collapsed midway through the first session of the mega auction.
Charu deserved every bit of it. To conduct an auction without any preparation and in the most unfortunate of circumstances is really spectacular. To be an auctioneer is so much different from being a host or commentator. It is more special because it's rare to see BCCI thanking anyone. Will we see him again today?
Veteran auctioneer Hugh Edmeades collapses while conducting the IPL players' auction on Saturday and was replaced by sports presenter Charu Sharma for the remainder of the event. Charu, who is not new to the IPL, was handed the auction duties as Edmeades recovered following the fall that was blamed on low blood pressure. To those who don't know, Charu was the CEO of RCB during the inaugural season of the IPL.
Indian Express understands that Hugh Edmeades has recovered as Charu, who is sipping a coffee at his residence has not received a call from the BCCI officials. But with BCCI you may never know. Charu might turn up. Watch out for this space for more auction-related news.
Meanwhile, former IPL auctioneer Richard Madley has confirmed that Hugh Edmeades 'feels fine and will resume IPL mega auction in the morning.'
South Africa’s U-19 World Cup star Dewald Brevis, known as ‘Baby AB’ for his batting style’s resemblance to AB de Villiers’, was bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs 3 crore. Abhishek Sharma, who returns to Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 6.5 crore, is the son of former Indian U-19 cricketer Raj Kumar Sharma, who nowadays works at Bank of India in Amritsar. (MORE)

The first round of auction of 10 marquee players threw up an ‘opening surprise’, Shikhar Dhawan going to Punjab Kings for Rs 8.25 crore after a three-way bidding war. Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals, too, were heavily involved in the bidding before giving up. For a 36-year-old player out of the Indian T20I set-up, such intense bidding was unexpected. (MORE)

It is only a job half done for the teams in the ongoing IPL mega auction. Welcome to our live coverage of Day 2.
Here's a recap of what unfolded on Day 1 at the mega auction.
Least surprisingly, most of the top earners, those that crossed Rs 10 crore, are multi-taskers. Ishan Kishan, who became the fourth-most expensive player in the history of the league when Mumbai Indians went full-throttle to grab him, not only keeps wicket but could be an opener too. He is, literally, an all-rounder. Deepak Chahar was another big earner, not only because he’s a competent bowler, but also because he could merrily swing his bat (he has a strike rate of 129). His timely 38 against the West Indies on Friday also benefitted him. He might not be as devastating a bowler as Kagiso Rabada (Rs 9.25 crore) or Trent Boult (Rs 8 crore), but all those little bits and pieces add up to a hefty sum. (Read full story)
