As many as 44,877 fresh COVID-19 cases were reported in the country in the last 24 hours, informed the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Sunday. The daily positivity rate in India has been recorded at 3.17 per cent and the weekly positivity rate at 4.46 per cent. Mumbai reported a positivity rate of under 1 per cent on Saturday, since the onset of the Omicron driven third wave in the metro.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Saturday that the central government will roll out COVID-19 vaccination for children in the age group of 5 to 15 years as soon as it receives recommendation to that effect from a group of experts.

Nitish Kumar government in Bihar on Saturday announced that it would lift “all restrictions” that had been imposed in the wake of the recent COVID-19 surge. Later in the day cap of 200 attendees at weddings and funerals was done away.

Coronavirus Omicron Live Updates: Night curfew lifted across J&K; offline classes to resume from Monday

The Jammu and Kashmir State Executive Committee (SEC) on Sunday announced the lifting of the night curfew after almost six months and opening of educational institutions in a phased manner beginning Monday amid a decline in COVID-19 cases.

The SEC also increased attendance at indoor gatherings to 50 per cent of the authorized capacity against the previous 25 per cent, while cinema halls, theatres, restaurants, clubs, gymnasiums and swimming pools were permitted to function at 25 per cent of the authorized capacity with due precautions. | READ MORE

Coronavirus Live Tracker: At 11,136, daily Covid-19 cases continue to drop in Kerala

The daily COVID-19 cases in Kerala continued to drop on Sunday. There were 11,136 fresh infections and 146 deaths which took the tally till date to 64,07,383 and 62,199 respectively. Of the fatalities, 11 were reported in the last 24 hours, 58 occurred in the last few days but were not recorded owing to late receipt of documents and 77 were designated as COVID-19 deaths after receiving appeals based on the new guidelines of the Centre and the directions of the Supreme Court, an official press release said. With 32,004 more people recovering from the virus since Saturday, the total recoveries reached 61,84,080. As the number of recoveries were more than the new cases, the active cases went down to 1,60,330, the release said. As many as 60,414 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. (PTI)

Coronavirus Omicron Live Tracker: 61 new COVID-19 cases in Ladakh

Ladakh's COVID-19 infection count rose to 27,400 on Sunday as 61 more people tested positive for the virus, officials said. Fifty of the fresh cases were reported from Leh district and 11 from Kargil district, the officials said. According to the officials, no coronavirus-related deaths were reported the previous day and the death toll remained unchanged at 226 with 167 fatalities in Leh and 59 in Kargil. Seventy-four more patients — 49 in Leh and 25 in Kargil — were discharged after recovering from COVID-19, pushing the number of recoveries to 26,604 in Ladakh. The officials said the number of active cases in Ladakh dropped to 570 — 433 in Leh and 137 in Kargil. PTI

Severe respiratory issues in 44% of deaths in Maharashtra in Covid-19 third wave

Around 44% of the patients who died in Maharashtra during the third wave in January had severe respiratory symptoms and complications, says a study by state government Covid-19 death audit committee.

The analysis found lower respiratory problems in 459 out of the 1,052 Covid patients who died in January.

Uttar Pradesh government relaxed night curfew timings in view of declining Covid cases

The state government said in its order that the night curfew will now be in place from 11 pm to 6 am every day instead of from 10 pm to 6 am.

On Friday, the UP government released new guidelines according to which schools in the state will reopen for all classes from Monday. Additionally, private and government offices are permitted to function at full capacity. Restaurants, cinema halls and hotels have also been allowed to open, but they must adhere to Covid-appropriate behaviour.

Performance of antibodies improve only after the previous Covid infection, says study

“While the number of antibodies decrease with time in both Covid-19 recovered (but never vaccinated) patients and vaccinated (but never infected) individuals, the quality of antibodies increases the following infection but not after vaccination,” study by Dr. Carmit Cohen of the Sheba Medical Center, Ramat Gan, Israel, and colleagues said.

Researchers also found that previously-infected patients with obesity, contrary to expectations, had a higher and more sustained immune response.

Olympics in Beijing 2022 reports 3 new COVID cases among games-related personnel

Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Organizing Committee said on Sunday that three new COVID-19 cases were detected among Games-related personnel on Feb 12. Two of the cases were found among new airport arrivals.

The Nitish Kumar government in Bihar on Saturday announced that it would lift “all restrictions” that had been imposed in the wake of the recent COVID-19 surge. The chief minister, who chaired a meeting of the crisis management group during the day, took to Twitter to say that the new guidelines will come into force from February 14. Later, a notification issued by the state home department said that the restrictions which have been done away with include the cap of 200 attendees at weddings and funerals. Assam reported a dip in new COVID-19 cases on Saturday as the state recorded 172 new infections, 95 less than the previous day, pushing the tally to 7,23,416, according to the bulletin issued by National Health Mission. Five new COVID-19 fatalities pushed the death toll to 6,601. The deaths were reported from Kamrup Metropolitan district (2), and one each from Dhubri, Dibrugarh and Majuli districts. The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country crossed 172.75 crore on Saturday, the Union health ministry said. More than 44 lakh vaccine doses were administered till 7 pm on Saturday, the ministry said, adding that the daily vaccination tally is expected to go up with the compilation of the final reports by late night. More than 1.72 crore precaution doses have so far been administered to healthcare workers (HCWs), frontline workers (FLWs) and those aged 60 years and above with comorbidities, the ministry said. Nagaland's COVID-19 tally on Saturday rose to 35,713 as 56 more people tested positive for the infection, 21 more than the previous day, a health official said. The Madhya Pradesh government on Saturday ordered the opening of schools and hostels across the state with full capacity with immediate effect, in view of the decline in COVID-19 cases, an official said. The school education department's order was issued in compliance of the directives issued by the state home department, the official said. All schools, residential schools and hostels will be started for Classes 1 to 12 with full attendance with immediate effect, he said. As per the order, COVID-19 appropriate behaviour such as wearing of masks and social distancing should be ensured during classes. Earlier on Friday, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had announced the lifting of all COVID-19 curbs, barring the night curfew, considering the drop in infections. (PTI)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Hong Kong reports record COVID-19 cases, tightens measures

Hong Kong on Saturday reported its daily record of confirmed COVID-19 cases, at 1,514. The city is struggling with the worst outbreak of the pandemic as it tries to implement China's zero-tolerance strategy using a mandatory quarantine for all travelers and mass testing. Hong Kong imposed new restriction this week, limiting in-person gatherings to no more than two households. It plans to allow only vaccinated people in shopping malls and supermarkets. Places of worship, hair salons and other businesses were ordered to close. Beijing officials and Chinese state media warned Hong Kong against loosening any of the measures, saying that adopting a “living with the virus” policy would overwhelm its medical systems. (PTI)

Coronavirus Live News: TN to reopen nursery, play schools

Nursery and play schools would reopen on February 16 in Tamil Nadu, the government announced on Saturday after Chief Minister M K Stalin chaired a high level meeting to review the coronavirus scenario in the state. While children of nursery classes would be going to school again after a gap of nearly 2 years, exhibitions are also allowed now and with such fresh relaxations, almost all other COVID-19 related restrictions have been lifted. As per a fresh notification on curbs applicable from February 16 to March 2, upto 200 people could participate in marriage and related ceremonies and as regards funeral, 100 people may take part. While every central jail here reported Covid cases among inmates during the highly-transmissible Omicron fuelled third wave, the number 16 women's prison in Mandoli had a different story to tell. “None of our inmates were infected, and they include small children,” a senior official said, attributing the feat to strict protocols and lessons learnt from the second wave last year, which had crippled health systems across the country. Coronavirus Live News: Mizoram registers 1,822 new COVID-19 cases, 1 fresh fatality

Mizoram's COVID-19 tally increased to 1,95,189 on Saturday as 1,822 more people, including 443 children, tested positive for the infection, an official said. The coronavirus death toll rose to 635 as one more patient succumbed to the infection, the official said. The state had reported 1,641 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths on the previous day. Aizawl district reported the highest number of new cases at 899, followed by Lunglei (234) and Serchhip (146), he said. (PTI)
