(File)Mumbai News Live Updates: Amid the hijab row, Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray said the Shiv Sena is of the view that students should wear the uniform if it is prescribed in schools or colleges and asserted that religious or political controversies should be kept away from the centres of education.
Thackeray’s comments come in the wake of the controversy in Karnataka over the wearing of ‘hijab’- the Islamic headscarf- in educational institutions by Muslim girls. Meanwhile, AIMIM activists put up banners in Maharashtra’s Beed city in support of ‘hijab’ for female Muslim students, and said the Indian Constitution gives the right to citizens to follow their religious culture.
Hitting out at the BJP over the hijab row, Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik asked whether the Sangh Pariwar and the ruling party will decide what one will eat or wear in the country and alleged it is the violation of fundamental rights of citizens. The national spokesperson of the Nationalist Congress Party also questioned whether Muslim girls going to schools/colleges was a problem and wondered what has happened to the ‘Beti Padhao’ (educate girls) slogan of the Centre.
A delegation of Jain community members on Wednesday asked the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to reconsider its decision to relocate the Jain Kirti Stambh in Ellora, Aurangabad.

Dismissed Mumbai Police assistant inspector Sachin Waze continued with his series of flip flops on the role of former state Home Minister Anil Deshmukh when he told the Chandiwal Commission in an affidavit on Wednesday that Deshmukh had taken money from him and also asked him to collect money from bars and restaurants.
But the affidavit, which was part of an application for retracting his earlier statements, was rejected by the Commission.

The Maharashtra cabinet on Wednesday took the decision to amend the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) Act to appoint an administrator to the Brihanmu-mbai Municipal Corporation (BM-C). The move comes in the backdrop of delayed civic polls due to legal tangle over Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation.
The tenure of the elected corporators of the BMC will expire on March 7. Sources in the government said that with this decision, administrators would be appointed to all the 10 municipal corporations along with Mumbai in the next month after the expiry of their respective terms. Read more

An oil leak was reported around 8.20 am on the Thane's Teen Haath Naka bridge (south bound) on the Eastern Express Highway, causing traffic snarls. As per the Kopari Traffic Police, there was no casualty, no injury. Soil was spread on the oil.
