Prime Minister announces ex-gratia for nine killed in AP accident
Nine people returning from a wedding were killed when a car in which they were travelling was hit by a truck in Andhra Pradesh's Anantapuram district. Father of the bride was among those killed in the accident that occurred near Budagavi village of Urvakonda mandal on Sunday night, police said. According to police the victims were returning home from a wedding in Bellary, Karnataka. The tragedy occurred when a truck coming from the opposite direction rammed into the car on Anantapuram-Bellary highway between Budagavi and Kottalapalli villages.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to meet BJP leadership
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will call on the BJP leadership on Monday in Delhi to discuss the upcoming byelection for the Majuli Assembly constituency. He is also likely to meet Home Minister Amit Shah. The byelection for the Majuli Assembly constituency in Assam will be held on March 7. The Election Commission of India had earlier on Saturday announced the poll date for the byelection. "Along with other Municipal Board elections in the state, Guwahati Municipal Corporation and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council elections will be held in April," said Sarma on Monday.
Just 15% of global coastal regions remain intact
An International team led by researchers at the University of Queensland (UQ) in Australia mapped the impact of human-caused pressures on coastal regions to identify those that are already highly degraded, and those that remain intact. The findings, published in the journal Conservation Biology, provide valuable insights into the widespread impacts of human activity on Earth's precious coastal ecosystems.

Hong Kong's zero-COVID strategy under pressure as cases soar
Hong Kong is expected to report a record of around 610 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, broadcaster TVB reported, in the biggest test yet for the city's zero-COVID strategy as it grapples to contain a growing outbreak. Around 300 others were found positive in preliminary tests, TVB said, citing an unnamed source. The global financial hub, which is following mainland China's strategy of suppressing all coronavirus outbreaks as soon as possible, has seen cases soar since January with over 2,000 infections compared with just two in December.
NCLAT to hear Amazon's interim plea to stay CCI order
The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) will hear e-commerce major Amazon's interim plea on February 14, seeking a stay over the order passed by fair trade regulator CCI that had suspended the over two-year-old approval for its deal with Future Coupons Pvt Ltd (FCPL). A three-member bench on Monday directed to list Amazon's plea on February 14 to pass an interim order and stay the operations of the order passed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) in December last year till it finally decides the matter.

Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit will be the first woman Vice Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University with the Ministry of Education (MoE) appointing her to the top post on Monday. The 59-year-old Pandit is also an alumna of JNU where she pursued her MPhil as well as PhD in International Relations.
Paytm shares tumble over 7% post Q3 earnings
Shares of One97 Communications, which operates under the Paytm brand, tumbled over 7 per cent after the company reported widening of consolidated loss to Rs 778.5 crore in the December 2021 quarter. It declined 5.69 per cent to Rs 898.95 on the BSE. On the NSE, the stock tumbled 7.55 per cent to Rs 881.30.

Nepal to reopen schools, other venues as virus cases fall
Nepal's capital on Monday announced it would ease strict pandemic measures, with plans to reopen schools and sports venues and slowly return city life to normal, as COVID-19 cases began to decline. The Nepalese government imposed tough restrictions last month as virus cases broke records, fueled by the omicron variant. Schools were shut, religious festivals banned, and restaurants were limited to serving small numbers of customers.

Two held with 'lethal weapons' near student protest over Hijab ban
Two persons on Monday were arrested for allegedly carrying 'lethal weapons' near Government PU College in Kundapur under Udupi district where students are protesting against disallowing hijab in educational institutions, informed local police. Vietnam starts reopening schools after year-long pandemic closure
More than 17 million Vietnamese students were due to return to school on Monday for the first time in about a year, the health ministry said, as authorities announced plans to start vaccinating children from as young as five against COVID-19. Omicron forces South Korea to end GPS monitoring
South Korea will no longer use GPS monitoring to enforce quarantines and will also end daily checkup calls to low-risk coronavirus patients as a fast-developing omicron surge overwhelms health and government workers. The speed of transmissions has made it impossible to maintain a tight and proactive medical response, Jeong Eun-kyeong, the country's top infectious disease expert, said Monday. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency reported 38,691 new cases of the virus, a nine-fold increase from the levels seen in mid-January, when omicron became the country's dominant strain. Jeong said the country may see daily jumps of 130,000 or 170,000 by late February.
North Korea stealing millions in cyber attacks
North Korea is continuing to steal hundreds of millions of dollars from financial institutions and cryptocurrency firms and exchanges, illicit money that is an important source of funding for its nuclear and missile programs, U.N. experts said in a report quoting cyber specialists. The panel of experts said that according to an unnamed government, North Korean “cyber-actors stole more than $50 million between 2020 and mid-2021 from at least three cryptocurrency exchanges in North America, Europe and Asia, probably reflecting a shift to diversify its cybercrime operations.”
S Korea fines Mercedes $16.9 million over emission rules breach
South Korea's antitrust regulator said on Monday it decided to fine German carmaker Mercedes-Benz and its Korean unit 20.2 billion won ($16.9 million) for false advertising tied to gas emissions of its diesel passenger vehicles. The Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) said Mercedes had tampered with pollution mitigation devices by installing illegal software in its vehicles, making them perform at lower levels in ordinary driving conditions than during certification tests. A total of 15 Mercedes models had such software installed, it said.
Thane logs 327 new COVID-19 cases, five deaths
Thane has reported 327 new cases of coronavirus, raising the infection count in the Maharashtra district to 7,05,753, an official said on Monday. These new cases were recorded on Sunday, he said. The virus also claimed the lives of five more people, which pushed the death toll in the district to 11,822, the official said, adding that the COVID-19 mortality rate in Thane stood at 1.67%.
