
Acclaimed singer Lata Mangeshkar breathed her last at Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai on Sunday, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari confirmed to ANI. She was 92. The singer, called the Nightingale of India, was admitted to the hospital in January with Covid-19 and pneumonia.
Daughter of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti Mangeshkar, Lata belonged to a musical family. Her father was a well-known Marathi musician and theatre artiste. She was first tutored by her father and later appeared as a child artiste in several of his plays.
Lata Mangeshkar recorded her first Hindi song called “Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu” for the Marathi feature Gajaabhaau, which had released in 1943. Later, she went on to collaborate with some of the most popular names of the Hindi music industry, including the likes of Anil Biswas, Shankar Jaikishan, Naushad Ali and SD Burman among others.
She has lent her voice to songs in Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, and other regional languages. She has been honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan as well as several National and Filmfare Awards.
"We lost a legend... Lata Mangeshkar ji your music, personality, humility will always stay with us for generations... My condolences to the family," tweeted Sanjay Dutt.
"Deeply saddened by Lata Mangeshkar ji's demise. A voice that defined Indian music for generations... Her legacy is truly unparalleled. Heartfelt condolences to the family, loved ones and all her admirers. Rest in peace Lata ji. There will never be another," tweeted the Telugu superstar.
"Legends remain immortal.. #RIP #LataMangeshkar thank you for the songs," tweeted filmmaker Farah Khan.
"The music will never stop. Om Shanti Lata ji," shared the global icon on her Instagram story.
"God speaks through beautiful voices. Sad sad day for India as our nightingale leaves her mortal body. Lataji’s voice has immortalised her for ever. She will live in our hearts through her music. My deepest condolences to her family, friends and fans. RIP Lataji," tweeted the Bollywood star.
"Today heaven truly gained the voice of an angel. I grew up listening to Lata ji’s song and as I mourn her loss today - I know with absolute confidence that unki “awaaz hi pehchan” hai & she has left an indelible mark on our Indian culture for many generations to come. And today the words of my favourite song resonate very deeply in my heart as I sing - lag jaa gale, ki phir yeh haseen raat ho naa ho…shaayad phir iss janam mein mulaakat ho naa ho. Thank you for making an entire nation swoon with your pure voice, we will miss you. Rest in peace, serenity & power," posted the filmmaker on his Instagram handle.
Mortal remains of Lata Mangeshkar will be taken to her residence around 12: 30 pm. The last rites with full State honours will be conducted at Shivaji Park at 6.30pm today, ANI reported.
"The sublime, universal voice which struck chord and touched every heart across world. Through her songs and divine voice Lata Mangeshkar will continue to live eternally amidst us and in every individual," NCP President Sharad Pawar tweeted.
"Death of Lata Mangeshkar is end of a #goldenera of Indian music, which ruled the world. She was very good human being and world-class singer. She will always live with us through her music. My homage. Om Shanthi," tweeted the MP.
"We were blessed to have grown up listening to Lata Didi’s voice. A few will ever reach the heights she did," musician Ehsaan Noorani tweeted.
"Shocked & extremely heartbreaking to know that our respected & most lovely Lata Mangeshkar ji has passed away. Her melodious voice will live in our hearts forever. Condolences to the family. OM Shanti," tweeted Esha Deol.
Hospital director says Lata Mangeshkar's family plans to take her mortal remains to Prabhu Kunj, her residence, for two hours. Her mortal remains will then be taken to Shivaji Park for public darshan before cremation.
"Deeply saddened by demise of didi, she has been a mother figure to me over the years, use to call her every fortnight & have conversations. It's a personal loss for me. Her presence will be immensely missed in my life. Love you Didi," shared the director.
"We lost a legend today. Truly an end of an era. May her soul rest in peace and glory," actor Tamannaah Bhatia shared on Twitter.
Two-day national mourning will be observed in the memory of the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar on Sunday and Monday. As a mark of respect to the Bharat Ratna awardee, the National Flag will fly at half-mast for two days and there will be no official entertainment.
