
Acclaimed singer Lata Mangeshkar breathed her last at Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai on Sunday, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari confirmed to ANI. She was 92. The singer, called the Nightingale of India, was admitted to the hospital in January with Covid-19 and pneumonia.
Daughter of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti Mangeshkar, Lata belonged to a musical family. Her father was a well-known Marathi musician and theatre artiste. She was first tutored by her father and later appeared as a child artiste in several of his plays.
Lata Mangeshkar recorded her first Hindi song called “Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu” for the Marathi feature Gajaabhaau, which had released in 1943. Later, she went on to collaborate with some of the most popular names of the Hindi music industry, including the likes of Anil Biswas, Shankar Jaikishan, Naushad Ali and SD Burman among others.
She has lent her voice to songs in Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, and other regional languages. She has been honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan as well as several National and Filmfare Awards.
The beloved singer's mortal remains has been taken to her residence, Prabha Kunj.

Amitabh Bachchan shared in his blog, "She has left us. The voice of a million centuries has left us .. her voice resounds now in the Heavens! Prayers for calm and peace."
"#LataMangeshkar Ji dedicated her life to music. Her voice was god gifted just like a child's smile or sunrise that doesn't have any religion. I had a close connection with her, she supported me in my difficult times. The void left by her is impossible to fill," Home Minister Amit Shah told ANI.
"The angelic voice that made us all swoon and fall in love has gone to the heavens to spread that love. Hearing Lata Tai’s melodies over the years, remembering her image in 2 chotis & that childlike attribute has left like an imprint that will never ever leave our hearts," Madhuri Dixit Nene tweeted.
"Rest in glory, Nightingale. You leave behind countless memorable songs and memories, that will continue to live in our hearts forever… Om Shanti," Sonali Bendre tweeted.
NCP president Sharad Pawar and Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray will visit Prabhu Kunj, residence of late singer Lata Mangeshkar.

Singer Rahul Vaidya said he is "deeply disturbed" by Lata Mangeshkar's death. He told indianexpress.com, "It’s something I don’t want to accept. I consider this the darkest day in the history of music. I am beyond sad. All my prayers for her and her family."
PM Narendra Modi is reported to come to Mumbai to pay homage to Lata Mangeshkar at Shivaji Park at her State funeral. He is said to land in the city at 4:30 pm.
