Maharashtra on Friday recorded 13,840 fresh novel coronavirus cases — a drop of 1,412 from a day ago — and 81 related fatalities. With this, the state’s cumulative tally reached 77.82 lakh, while the death toll increased to 1.42 lakh. Mumbai recorded 846 new cases and 7 deaths.
Meanwhile, President Ram Nath Kovind will visit Maharashtra from February 10 to 13 and inaugurate the renovated Darbar Hall at the Raj Bhavan on February 11. The inauguration was scheduled for December 8 but was postponed due to the death of General Bipin Rawa.
Four persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of a Shiv Sena functionary in Yavatmal district in Maharashtra, police said on Friday. Sunil Divre (40), a gram panchayat member of Bhambh Raja village and husband of the present sarpanch, was first assaulted with an axe and then shot dead outside his house on Thursday evening, an official said. An offence was registered against spiritual leader Bandya Tatya Karadkar for his alleged comments against NCP leader Supriya Sule and BJP's Pankaja Munde during an agitation in Maharashtra's Satara district, police said on Friday. Karadkar had on Thursday staged a protest against the state government's decision to permit sale of wine in supermarkets and grocery shops. During the agitation, the spiritual leader allegedly made some statements about Sule and Munde, an official from Satara police said.

He said the state, which was reporting 48,000 cases per day during the third wave which started some weeks ago, was now seeing the tally increase by 15,000 daily, adding that the infection curve was flattening in major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Raigad.
A day after the Maharashtra state board announced that exams will be held offline as per the declared schedule, it released a list of helpline numbers for all the nine divisions to resolve exam-related queries that one might have. With several student-friendly measures to be implemented this year, the board announced separate helpline for all nine divisions. The list of helplines shows that board officials have been roped in for the work.
In the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic, officials said students, teachers and parents may have several questions regarding offline board examinations. These division-wise helplines are to resolve all such queries, said officials. Along with landline numbers for each division, the board has also announced cellphone numbers of concerned officials.
With the flattening of the pandemic curve in the third wave, the state’s Covid-19 caseload dropped to 13,840 on Friday with 81 deaths. Active Covid cases in the state have dropped by 41% in the last seven days. Friday’s numbers were a drop of 9.25 per cent from 15,252 a day ago.
With the gradual drop, the active cases which were 2,44,344 on January 29 fell to 1,44,011 on February 4. A day after recording 827 cases on Thursday, the daily caseload in Mumbai rose marginally to 846 on Friday. Compared to Thursday, when 36,082 tests were conducted, the testing increased to 44,323 on Friday.
