Mumbai News Live: Veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar passed away on Sunday morning due to post-Covid-19 complications. She was 92. Her condition deteriorated on Saturday and she was put on ventilator support in a critical condition. The legendary singer’s body will be kept at Shivaji Park in Mumbai for people to pay their last respects. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday announced state funeral for singer Lata Mangeshkar.

Maharashtra recorded 11,394 new cases, a drop of 2,446 from the day before, and 68 fatalities in the last 24 hours. Mumbai on Saturday recorded 643 fresh novel coronavirus cases, 1,402 recoveries, and four deaths. This is the third consecutive day that new cases remained below 1,000 in the city.

In another development, social activist Anna Hazare has threatened to go on an indefinite strike against the state government’s decision to allow sale of wine in supermarkets and walk-in shops across Maharashtra.

Singer Lata Mangeshkar dies after being hospitalised with Covid-19

Veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar passed away on Sunday morning due to post Covid-19 complications. She was 92 years old. Her condition had detoriated on Saturday and she was put on a ventilator and was critical. The public darshan will be held in Shivaji Park in Mumbai and the BMC has been told to make arrangements for Darshan. 

Mangeshkar had lung ailments two and a half years ago and was treated for them. She used oxygen often at home too. She is believed to have contracted Covid-19 from her domestic helps.

🦠Maharashtra records 11,394 new Covid-19 cases, 68 deaths

Maharashtra on Saturday recorded 11,394 new coronavirus positive cases, a drop of 2,446 from the day before, and 68 fatalities, including 28 in the Pune circle, due to Covid-19 related complications, the state health department said. On Friday, the daily number of cases had dropped by 1,412 from Thursday's count of 15,252 when 75 people succumbed to Covid-19 infection, the health department said.

With the latest additions, the tally of Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra rose to 77,94,034. The latest death toll stands at 1,43,008, the department said in a report. A total of 21,677 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours in Maharashtra, taking the tally of recoveries to 75,13,436, leaving the state with 1,33,655 active cases.

Dalits face boycott in Maharashtra village, police intervene

Tension prevailed in a village in Maharashtra's Latur district when villagers allegedly decided to boycott the local Dalit community over a dispute related to temple entry. Police on Saturday said the dispute was resolved following the meeting of a peace committee and the situation was now normal.

Some social media posts claimed that the dispute arose when two Dalit youngsters entered a Hanuman temple and broke a coconut at Tadmugali village in Nilanga tehsil three days ago. Some youths took objection to their entry into the temple, and later people from other castes decided to boycott the village's Dalit community, reports said.

Lata Mangeshkar's condition remains critical, says doctor

The condition of singer Lata Mangeshkar has detoriated again and she is on a ventilator and critical, said Dr Pratit Samdhani of Breach Candy hospital who is treating her. He said that she is in ICU and is under observation. She was taken off ventilator last week. Mangeshkar, 92, was admitted to Breach Candy in first week of January after she contracted Covid-19.

With the gradual drop, the active cases which were 2,44,344 on January 29 fell to 1,44,011 on February 4.

Spread of Omicron variant lowers Covid CFR to 0.1%

Despite the high transmissibility of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 in the third wave of the pandemic, the case fatality rate (CFR) – proportion of deaths among all infected individuals – was only 0.1 per cent last month, which is substantially lower than the previous two waves.

As per an analysis by the state health department, in 2020, which is marked as the first wave, 19,44,789 patients contracted Covid-19. Among them, 53,422 succumbed, which comes to a CFR of 2.75 per cent. In 2021, due to the spread of Delta variants that are more deadly, the state witnessed the second wave, in which 47,51,341 people contracted Covid-19. Among them, 85,984 died at a CFR of 1.81 per cent. Last month, with the advent of Omicron, which dominated over the Delta variant, the third wave struck Maharashtra. In all, 9,95,474 people contracted Covid-19. Among them, 950 died and the CFR stood at 0.1 per cent.
