
Delhi Live News: Daily Covid cases in Delhi continued to decline, with 1,410 new infections being reported on Sunday, a drop from 1,607 on the previous day. The positivity rate was recorded at 2.45 per cent. With the number of cases declining at a rapid pace, hospital occupancy has also dipped. According to Sunday’s health bulletin, only 6.32 per cent of the 15,416 hospital beds were occupied.
Schools in the national capital will reopen for classes 9 to 12 from Monday. Meanwhile, authorities at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi permitted schools and centres to resume offline teaching and learning activities for students from Monday. This comes after the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Friday allowed higher education institutes to resume physical teaching and learning activities amid declining cases of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in the national capital. The Delhi University, on the other hand continues to stay online.
On the weather front, another western disturbance is likely to affect Northwest India from the night of February 8 and could bring overcast skies and light rainfall to Delhi on February 9, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).On Monday, the IMD forecast indicates that the maximum temperature is likely to be 25 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature could be 6 degrees Celsius.
Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit will be the first woman Vice Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University with the Ministry of Education (MoE) appointing her to the top post on Monday. Pandit is currently a political science professor at the Savitribai Phule University in Maharashtra. The 59-year-old Pandit is also an alumna of JNU where she pursued her MPhil as well as PhD in International Relations. "President Ram Nath Kovind, who is Visitor to the University, has approved the appointment of Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit as JNU Vice Chancellor. Her appointment is for a period of five years," a senior MoE official said.
Pandit began her teaching career from Goa University in 1988 and moved to Pune University in 1993. She has held administrative position in various academic bodies. She has also been a member of the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) and Visitor's nominee to central universities. (With PTI)
The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) has released the result of the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) and ISC exams 2022 on February 7. The result will be announced at 10 am. Students who appeared for the exam can check the result at cisce.org, results.cisce.org. The respective schools can also check the result of the students on the Careers portal of the Council.
This year, the council divided the academic year into two terms and separate exams at the end of both terms. The result declared will not categorise any student as pass or fail and will just indicate the marks that the student has scored in each subject. The student will be declared pass or fail only after the conduction of the second-semester exams.
The ICSE semester 1 exams were conducted from November 29 to December 16 while the ISC exams were conducted from November 22 and concluded on December 20. The first semester exams included multiple-choice questions. The second semester will be conducted in March-April 2022.

Outgoing Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) vice-chancellor and newly appointed University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman M Jagadesh Kumar Monday penned a farewell note to teachers, students and staff at JNU.Kumar wished them a bright future and said as the VC, he "tried to be available to all stakeholders".
Kumar's tenure was marked by a constant tussle between the administration and students and teachers.In a separate note, he welcomed the appointment of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) professor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit as the first female VC of JNU. "I am handing over the charge to her today and wish her success in her new role," he said.
At least 12 shanties were gutted after a fire broke out in Behrampur village near Sector 69 on Monday morning. Fire department officials suspect a short to be the cause of fire, while saying that no loss of life was reported. The officials added the incident was reported at 7.20 am, following which two fire tenders from the Sector 29 fire station were rushed to the sopt.
Delhi's Parliament Street and Tughlak Road police stations will soon be revamped to highlight their historical significance and connections to freedom fighter Bhagat Singh and Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, officials said on Sunday.
The two police stations, which are drenched in multicolour lights every night, will soon have posters with quotes of Singh and Gandhi, reminding people about their contributions to the Indian freedom struggle. Schools in the national capital will reopen for classes 9 to 12 from Monday after a spurt in COVID-19 cases had led to their closure in December, even as stakeholders debated the continuing of hybrid teaching and learning mode.
On Monday and Tuesday, the Air Quality Index (AQI) is likely to be in the ‘very poor’ category, and could improve on Wednesday with the expected rainfall, according to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) forecasting system.
Delhi will have a sunny day and clear skies throughtout the day on Monday with shallow fog in the morning. The IMD forecast indicates that the maximum temperature is likely to be 25 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature could be 6 degrees Celsius. Over the past 24 hours, the maximum temperature was 24.2 degrees Celsius, a few notches higher than the maximum temperatures recorded last week. The minimum temperature recorded early on Monday was 8.8 degrees Celsius.

Various students organisations will stage protests to demand the reopening of the Delhi University (DU), after the Delhi Disaster Management Authority's (DDMA) gave a go-ahead to resumption of offline teaching in higher educational institutions from Monday.
The student outfits said the campus has been closed for almost two years now and as a result, the "standard of education has gone down". Despite the DDMA giving a go-ahead to the reopening of higher educational institutions from Monday, the DU has not issued any notification for the reopening of the campus. Officials have said the university will open in a few days and they will formulate a strategy in this regard.
The student unions, including the right-wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Left-affiliated All India Students' Association (AISA), have said they will protest against the DU authorities for not opening the campus immediately.

The new order from JNU comes after the Delhi Disaster Management Authority Friday allowed higher educational institutes to resume physical teaching and learning activities amid declining Covid cases in the national capital. Crucially, an education department official said that the requirement for institutes to maintain 50% of classroom or laboratory capacity at any given time will be done away with.
Meanwhile at DU, all non-teaching staff of departments and colleges have been asked to be present at their workplaces on all working days with immediate effect. “The online teaching and learning activities shall continue for all other academic programmes as per the notified Academic Calendar,” the order read.
While Delhi has been recording a consistent decline in the number of Covid cases and positivity rate for the past two weeks, the number of deaths has seen a slight dip over the past six days.
According to data from the government, in a period of nine days (January 26 to February 3), the city saw 256 Covid deaths. Of these, 70 were caused by the virus while the rest happened to test positive after being admitted to hospitals for another illness or had co-morbidities.
Between January 13 and February 3, the city saw 691 Covid deaths — 152 from the infection, 530 were incidental or had co-morbid conditions such as kidney, liver and respiratory diseases, diabetes, and cancer. Nine deaths were from other causes (admitted to RTA/ trauma/burn, etc).
The Delhi Police arrested two more persons, including an autorickshaw driver, in connection with the Shahdara rape-assault case.
On January 26, a young woman was abducted, allegedly gangraped by her neighbours, and paraded on the streets. The accused also allegedly assaulted the woman with weapons and blackened her face. Several videos of the incident went viral on social media where the family can be seen thrashing and harassing the victim inside their homes and on the streets.
Their motive was personal enmity. Police said the family held her responsible for the death of one of their relatives – a teenager who was allegedly stalking the woman and proposed to her, which she rejected. Read more
The strike by medical staff and doctors at the East Delhi Municipal Corporation’s Swami Dayanand Hospital, who have been protesting against salary delays for the past six days, ended on Sunday.
A senior official of the East MCD said a meeting was held with union officials of Group A, B, C and D employees and it was conveyed to them that if they return to work, then no disciplinary action would be taken against anyone and their demands would be considered sympathetically.

The Delhi BJP on Sunday symbolically "sealed" a liquor shop situated near a temple in Moti Nagar by putting a lock on the premises and demanded that the Kejriwal government shut all "illegal" liquor vends in the national capital. This comes two days after the state unit of BJP threatened to seal liquor vends situated in residential areas, near schools and religious places if the Arvind Kejriwal government fails to shut down these shops within the next 48 hours.
Addressing the media in front of the liquor shop in west Delhi, BJP's Delhi unit president Adesh Gupta accused Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of "supporting the liquor mafia. I want to tell Kejriwal that he should shut all the liquor shops that he has opened to benefit liquor mafia immediately," he said.
"If you will not take any action, the BJP workers and leaders would seal these shops situated near residential areas, religious places, schools," he warned. (PTI)

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said with the demise of singing legend Lata Mangeshkar, an era of music in India has ended. "The demise of 'swar kokila' of India Lata Mangeshkar is the end of an era of music in India. Her melodious voice will remain immortalised among us and in the entire world. I pray to God to give the departed soul a place at his feet," Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi.
Mangeshkar (92), one of the biggest music icons of the country, died due to multiple organ failure at a Mumbai hospital earlier in the day.
Conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar has been shifted to another jail in Tihar while three officials, including two assistant superintendents, have been sent to the district lines of the jail headquarters after authorities found that one of them allegedly received Rs 1.25 lakh from Sukesh.
