Maharashtra Cong slams PM for his 'scaring labourers' remarks, says Centre shirked responsibility

Hitting back at Prime minister Narendra Modi for his comments that Congress was standing at Mumbai station and scaring innocent labourers into fleeing to their native states, the Maharashtra unit of the party on Monday said that on the contrary, the Centre ran away from its responsibility during the coronavirus pandemic whereas Congress facilitated the return of migrant workers.

Leading the attack, Maharashtra ministers Balasaheb Thorat and Ashok Chavan termed PM Modi's comments in Lok Sabha “unfortunate” that did not behove his post. They said the Centre was trying to hide its failures.

“By blaming the Congress, PM Modi has shown his petty thinking. The Centre should have facilitated their (migrant labourers) return but it ran away from this responsibility,” Chavan said and added that the prime minister's comments are unfortunate and baseless. (PTI)

THE CONTENDERS

Additional Chief Secretary (home) Manukumar Srivastava of 1986 batch, Additional Chief Secretary, general administration department Sujata Saunik and her husband and additional chief secretary of PWD and finance department Manoj Saunik of 1987 batch are strong contenders for the top post. If the state selects Manoj Saunik, then he will supersede his wife. Two more officers – Ashwani Kumar (1987) and Jayashree Mukherjee (1986) — too are in the reckoning for the top job.

Lata Mangeshkar: An artiste beyond extraordinaire, Hindi cinema’s star-maker

For more than seven decades now, the name Lata Mangeshkar has been synonymous with extraordinary talent and artistic excellence. Even though she slowed down about two decades ago, after a highly successful and prolific career, few Indian artistes can dream of ever matching her achievements, star power, or mass appeal. Such is her impact on Indian music that Mangeshkar can not only be unequivocally called an exceptional vocalist but also one of the greatest Indians of all time.

The 1929-born singer was around 20 years old when she swung into popular consciousness in 1949 with the outstanding success of “Aayega Aanewala” in Mahal. However, at the time, there was an unfair practice of characters in the movies, on whom a song was picturised, to be credited for songs instead of the original playback singer. In this case, it was Madhubala’s character in Mahal, named Kamini. The song created a frenzy and All India Radio (AIR) was flooded with calls to know the singer’s name. Read more

She recalled the story in Kumar’s 2014 autobiography The Substance and the Shadow. Mangeshkar was introduced to Kumar by composer Anil Biswas aboard a local train. When the actor asked where she is from, Biswas told him her full name. Read more
