US grants sanctions relief to Iran as Nuclear Talks hit final weeks
"The technical discussions facilitated by the waiver are necessary for the final weeks of JCPOA [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action] talks, and the waiver itself would be essential to ensuring Iran's swift compliance with its nuclear commitments," the official said on Friday. "If talks do not result in a return to the nuclear agreement, such technical discussions could still contribute to achieving our non-proliferation goals."
Malaysia ex-PM Mahathir discharged from hospital
Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia's 96-year-old former prime minister, has been discharged from the National Heart Institute, the hospital said on Saturday. The country's longest-serving prime minister, who served for more than two decades in the top job, will have follow-ups for continuation of his medical treatment as required, the hospital said in a statement.

A cross country skier born in Xinjiang, who was one of the two final torchbearers at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics opening ceremony on Friday, was not picked because of where she comes from, the International Olympic Committee said on Saturday. Dinigeer Yilamujiang, from Altay in China's western Xinjiang region, placed the lit torch onto a giant snowflake along with Zhao Jiawen, a 21-year-old biathlete, before it was lifted high above the spectators at Beijing's Bird's Nest stadium.
2193 Indian prisoners repatriated from Pakistan custody since 2014
Replying to question on the details of Indian prisoners held in Pakistani jails, the MoS said, "As per available information, 83 Indian defence personnel, including prisoners of war, are believed to be in Pakistan's custody, but their presence has not been acknowledged by Pakistan so far."
India invested more than $3 billion in Afghanistan
Replying to a question in the Lower House of Parliament on investment in Afghanistan, the MoS said, "India has been engaged in a development partnership with Afghanistan, which includes more than five hundred projects spread across each of the 34 provinces of the country in critical areas of power, water supply, road connectivity, healthcare, education, agriculture and capacity building." "In all, more than USD 3 billion have been invested in the welfare of the people of Afghanistan."

China ahead of US in hypersonic weapons development, tests, resources
The US lags behind China in hypersonic weapons development, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin told more than 24 CEOs of the country's biggest defence contractors and several of them responded that a shortage of wind tunnels to conduct tests was a major bottleneck in the program, reported Sputnik. China had around 12 wind tunnels to conduct hypersonic testing and was already at work constructing additional ones at a rate of one every six months, the defence industry chiefs present told Austin at the meeting on Thursday.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 jolted southeast Indian Ridge at 20:25:09 GMT on Friday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. The USGS determined the epicentre of the quake. The number of US deaths caused by the novel coronavirus disease surpassed 9,00,000, according to the tally compiled by Johns Hopkins University (JHU). On Friday afternoon, the JHU tally showed 9,00,334 people in the United States have died due to COVID-19 and more than 76 million cases have been confirmed in the country since January 2020.
