Police have booked several persons linked to the construction of a building where a slab collapsed killing five persons and injuring four others in Pune. According to Police Commissioner Amitabh Gupta, three persons were detained for questioning.

Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi has paid his condolences to the victims of the slab collapse incidents at an under construction building in Yerwada area of Pune, in which at least five persons have died and five more were left injured, on Thursday night. “Pained by the mishap at an under-construction building in Pune. Condolences to the bereaved families. I hope that all those injured in the mishap recover at the earliest”, PM Modi tweeted.

The incident took place around 10.45 pm on Thursday at Shastrinagar in the Yerwada area. The labourers, all of them from Bihar, were buried under tons of metal after the supporting structure came down over them. The injured were taken to the Sassoon General Hospital.

Meanwhile, Pune recorded 4,758 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday and 26 related deaths. Also, over nine lakh beneficiaries above 18 years are due for the second dose of the Covishield vaccine and another 71,000 for the second dose of Covaxin in the Pune district.

Third wave may get over by mid-March as cases declining, curve flattening, says Maharashtra minister

Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope on Friday said the number of COVID-19 cases had begun declining statewide and predicted that the third wave of the pandemic might get over by the second or third week of March.

He said the state, which was reporting 48,000 cases per day during the third wave which started some weeks ago, was now seeing the tally increase by 15,000 daily, adding that the infection curve was flattening in major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Raigad.

Speaking to reporters here, the minister said the Centre must start the process of vaccinating children in the 12-15 age segment against COVID-19. He said Maharashtra was ready with the health infrastructure to vaccinate this age group. (PTI)

Mohammad Nahid Mohammad Master, a 21-year-old construction worker, has lodged a case under Sections 304 (culpable homicide), 336 (endangering human life by acting negligently), 337 and 338 of the Indian Penal Code.“Despite knowing that accidents may take place during the construction, the accused persons did not take requisite precautions and caused the death of five persons,” reads the FIR.

Maharashtra: 293 TET candidates got passing certificate despite not clearing exam, say police

Over 290 candidates, who had failed to clear the Maharashtra Teachers' Eligibility Test (TET) held in 2020, were issued passing certificates four months after the exam results were out, a police official said here on Friday.

Pune police are currently probing the alleged malpractices in the TET-2020 exam results and have so far arrested 13 persons, including an IAS officer.

"The investigation has revealed that 293 candidates, who did not clear the TET, were given passing certificates four months after the exam results were declared," the official said.

During the probe, the police had earlier found that marks of as many as 7,800 candidates were allegedly manipulated and changed in exchange of money. (PTI)

Man booked for using wife's ID card to check into hotel with girlfriend

An offence was registered against a 41-year-old man and his girlfriend after the former allegedly used his wife's Aadhaar card for identification to check into a hotel in Maharashtra's Pune, police said on Friday.

A case was registered against the duo at Hinjewadi police station on Tuesday, an official said. According to the police, the man is a Gujarat-based businessman and his wife is a director in the company.

The complainant had installed a GPS device in her husband's car and found out that he was cheating on her and lodged a complaint, she said. "The woman had fitted a GPS tracker in her husband's SUV. In November last year, when he told her about his business trip to Bengaluru, she checked his location and found that the car was in Pune," the official said. (PTI)

Pune HR professional cheated of Rs 8.7 lakh

A cyber fraudster has duped a HR professional from the city to the tune of Rs 8.7 lakh. The victim, a 42-year-old woman, lodged the FIR in this case at the Sangvi police station on Wednesday. Rashmi Shukla submits state intelligence dept’s letters on Elgaar Parishad

In her affidavit submitted before the Koregaon Bhima Commission of Inquiry, IPS officer Rashmi Shukla has attached various letters of the Maharashtra State Intelligence Department (SID) regarding the Elgaar Parishad held at Shaniwar Wada in Pune on December 31, 2017, ahead of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Koregaon Bhima.

On Friday, Shukla will be examined as a witness before the two-member commission headed by retired Justice J N Patel. The panel is probing the causes of the Koregaon Bhima violence of January 1, 2018, in which one person died and several others were injured. Shukla was the commissioner of Pune City Police at the time of the violence and is currently posted in Hyderabad as the additional director general of CRPF (South Zone). Read More

Chemotherapy centre to be inaugurated at Symbiosis Hospital

The Symbiosis University Hospital and Research Centre (SUHRC) will inaugurate its chemotherapy centre on Friday, on the occasion of World Cancer Day on February 4. The Centre will be inaugurated by Dr Navin Khattry, deputy director, head haemato lymphoid and bone marrow transplant at Tata Memorial Centre.

Maharashtra board firm on offline exams for Classes X, XII

Refusing to budge despite pressure from students and parents, the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) on Thursday announced that board exams for Class X and XII will be held in offline, pen and paper mode. Officials ruled out the possibility of either online exams or allotting marks to students based on internal assessments.

For the last few days, a section of students and parents have been running a campaign on social media, demanding cancelation of offline exams.
