Google has released a new URL Inspection Tool API that allows third-party apps to connect with Google's search console dashboard and deliver URL inspection data. The additional API access will make it easier for SEOs and publishers to find more difficulties and resolve problems.
The Search Console API Extends the Data's Utility
Application Programming Interface is the abbreviation for Application Programming Interface. An API may be thought of as a link between two software applications that allows them to interact.
Tools like Screaming Frog, for example, may connect to Google Search Console via APIs and use the data to automate the process of finding insights. Screaming Frog is connected to Google Search Console through the Configuration page, then API > Google Search Console.
Screaming Frog (and other apps) can now collect statistics like clicks, impressions, CTR, and location thanks to the API. The API may also be used to find new URLs for crawling as well as to add orphaned URLs to site audit reports. WordPress plugins and a variety of other SEO tools may use the Search Console API to securely access the Search Console.
Google provided the following examples of how to use this API access:
- “For example, checking if there are differences between user-declared and Google-selected canonicals, or debugging structured data issues from a group of pages.
- CMS and plugin developers can add a page or template-level insights and ongoing checks for existing pages. For example, monitoring changes over time for key pages to diagnose issues and help prioritize fixes.”
What is URL Inspection Tool?
The URL inspection tool gives you detailed information about URLs that Google has indexed. It contains details on indexing difficulties, as well as structured data and AMP faults. The tool does not give a mechanism to test a live URL, and the API does not provide that feature.
Google's developer documentation states: “View the indexed, or indexable, the status of the provided URL. Presently only the status of the version in the Google index is available; you cannot test the indexability of a live URL.”
Usage Quota
There is a daily cap of 2,000 total requests and a speed limit of 600 queries per minute, according to Google. Nonetheless, the new URL Inspection Tool API allows for new ways to track the progress of a website's SEO as well as find and solve problems. In the near future, the new capability should start to surface in tools and plugins.
