In a push for 5G technology, the Indian government is set to announce a new production-linked incentive scheme, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in her 2022 Budget presentation.

“5G technology in particular can offer job opportunities and growth. The required spectrum auctions will be conducted in 2022 to facilitate roll out of 5G mobile services within 2022-23 by private telecom operators,” Sitharaman said.

The PLI scheme is reportedly focussed on design-led manufacturing; and in an attempt to enable affordable internet services, the government is also setting aside 5% of the annual Universal obligation services fund (USO) towards providing and promoting R&D as well as commercialisation of technology.

“All villages should have the same access to communication facilities as urban areas,” Sitharaman pointed out, adding that the contract for laying optical fiber networks in all villages and rural areas will be through public private partnership in 2022-23.

The work awarded is expected to be completed in 2025. She also said that measures will be taken to get more efficiency out of the OFC network.
