Coronavirus Omicron Live Tracker: Anti-vaccine protest in Canada spurs outrage

In a scene at odds with Canadians' reputation for niceness and rule-following, thousands of protesters railing against vaccine mandates and other COVID-19 restrictions descended on the capital over the weekend, deliberately blocking traffic around Parliament Hill. Coronavirus Live Updates: WHO cites glut of waste from COVID response

The World Health Organization says overuse of gloves, “moon suits” and the use of billions of masks and vaccination syringes to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus have spurred a huge glut of health care waste worldwide. The UN health agency reported Tuesday that tens of thousands of tons of extra medical waste has strained waste management systems and is threatening both health and the environment, pointing to a “dire need” to improve those systems and get a response from both governments and people. “Part of the message for the public is to become more of a conscious consumer,” said Dr. Margaret Montgomery, technical officer of WHO's water, sanitation, hygiene and health unit. “In terms of the volume, it's enormous.” “We find that people are wearing excessive PPE,” Montgomery said, referring to personal protection equipment. The agency says most of the roughly 87,000 tons of such equipment – including what she called “moon suits” and gloves — obtained from March 2020 to November 2021 to battle COVID-19 has ended up as waste. More than 8 billion doses of vaccine administered globally have produced 143 tons of extra waste in terms of syringes, needles and safety boxes. (AP)

Coronavirus Live Updates: Omicron sub-variant spreads more than original strain, says study

A sub-variant of the highly contagious Omicron coronavirus strain is even more infectious than the original version, according to a study conducted in Denmark. The researchers examined the transmission of Omicron subvariant BA.2 versus BA.1 in 8,541 Danish households and 17,945 household members. The yet-to-be peer-reviewed finding, posted on the preprint repository MedRxiv, indicates that the rapid spread of BA.2 could be related to an inherent increased transmissibility of the sub-variant. There is also evidence to support immune evasive properties of the BA.2 sub-variant, the researchers said. (PTI)

Coronavirus Live Updates: Britain adds possible reinfections to Coronavirus case numbers

Britain has started counting possible COVID-19 reinfections in its daily coronavirus data, changing its approach to reflect the increased number of people catching the disease for a second time as the Omicron variant predominates. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) added around 840,000 cases to the cumulative total, taking it to 17.3 million coronavirus infections reported. Britain's daily COVID statistics previously would only count people who had tested positive for the first time to avoid double-counting people who had received multiple positive test results for the same infection. However, with variants such as Omicron leading to an increase in reinfections, the UKHSA said it would change its method to treat positive tests as separate infections if there was at least 90 days between test results. The change took effect on Monday. (Reuters)

Coronavirus Omicron Live Updates: Study confirms current Covid-19 vaccines induce robust protection against Delta & Omicron-related severe disease

As per a recent study, the prevalent COVID-19 vaccines are inducing robust protection against severe illness and hospitalisation caused by Covid-19 Delta variant and Covid-19 Omicron variant.

PTI reported that the research published in the journal Nature has shown that the Covid-19 vaccines build and induce protection against severe Covid disease via cellular immunity or by producing protective immune cells, such as killer and memory cells in humans.

Researchers said that the induced cellular immunity protects from severe COVID-19 disease even if and when Coronavirus' Omicron variant evades neutralising antibodies.

In its research, the team at Israel's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) studied samples from 47 individuals vaccinated with Johnson & Johnson or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines to arrive at the conclusion.

Corresponding author Dan H Barouch was quoted saying that the research data provides immunological context for the observation that current vaccines still provide robust protection against severe disease and hospitalisation due to the Omicron variant despite substantially reduced neutralising antibody responses and increased breakthrough infection.

The recipients of the researchers had been vaccinated by either the Johnson & Johnson or Pfizer vaccines.
