
Coronavirus Omicron India LIVE News: India reported 2.09 lakh new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, sharply down from Sunday’s 2.34 lakh infections. The active case load now stands at 18,31,268 while the recovery rate marginally rose to 94.37 per cent.
The weekly and daily positivity rates are 15.77 and 15.75 percent respectively. The daily and weekly positivity rates were at 14.5 per cent and 16.4 per cent respectively on Sunday.
The Election Commission will meet on Monday to assess the COVID-19 situation in the five poll-going states and decide on whether to continue the ban on physical rallies. The Commission may also decide on whether fresh relaxations can be extended to political parties and candidates in holding physical campaigning events. The poll panel had imposed a ban on physical rallies and roadshows when it announced the poll schedule for Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Punjab and Manipur till January 31.
While the second wave of the pandemic saw rampant use of antivirals and immune-modulating drugs that led to shortage and black-marketing, the third wave has seen a slew of patients being prescribed monoclonal antibody therapy.
Currently, there are two cocktails approved for use in Covid-19 patients in India — Casirivimab and Imdevimab called Regen-CoV2, and Eli Lilly’s Bamlanivimab and Etesevimab. Both cocktails are indicated for use in those with mild to moderate Covid who do not require oxygen but who are at a high risk of progressing to severe disease.

President Ram Nath Kovind, speaking before the commence of the Parliament' Budget Session, thanked healthcare and frontline workers for working as a team during the Covid-19 pandemic.
"India's capability in fight against COVID-19 was evident in its vaccination program. In less than a year, we made a record of administering over 150 crore doses of vaccine. Today, we're one of the leading nations of the world in terms of administering the maximum number of doses," he added.
Covid-19 is a respiratory infection that typically results in symptoms like fever, cold, cough and fatigue. However, an increasing number of people are also complaining of body aches like headaches and lower back pains after getting infected by the virus.
According to Dr Charu Dutt Arora, Consultant- Home Care, Covid expert and Medical services, Asian Institute of Medical Sciences, Faridabad, back pain is one of the most common symptoms of Covid-19. “Although people believe that Covid-19 is mainly a respiratory virus and causes only infection of the lungs, there have been multiple studies in the West which have shown that 63 per cent of the patients infected by the Delta variant and 42 per cent of the patients infected by the Omicron variant have reported back pain as one of the major symptoms,” he said.

Fifty-four-year old Manilal Chavada, a resident of Kanodar village in Banaskantha, died at home on May 2 last year, just two hours after his family managed to arrange an oxygen tank. The medical certificate of cause of death states: “Patient (came) with severe breathlessness and fever. The report (showed) suspected case of Corona”.
However, the family’s claim for Rs 50,000 ex-gratia, announced for Covid deaths, was rejected on January 17. Now, they are looking for a piece of paper from eight months ago in which the doctor prescribed oxygen for Chavada, so as to approach a Grievance Redressal Committee to appeal against the rejection.

Lata Mangeshkar is now cured of Covid and pneumonia, said Dr Pratik Samdani, who is leading the team of doctors attending her.
Mangeshkar (92) was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Breach Candy Hospital in south Mumbai in the first week of January after she contracted Covid-19. Dr Samdani said that she continues to be in the ICU and off ventilator.

Schools reopened in Bengaluru on Monday and classes were conducted with Covid-9 norms, including wearing masks, using sanitisers and maintaining social distance, in place.
On a day when many states began the drive to administer the second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to the age group of 15-18 years, India administered over 166 crore vaccines in total.
While the number of doses given in the last 24 hours was 28 lakh, 1.18 crore booster doses have been administered since January 10.

Administration of the second dose of anti-COVID-19 vaccines to eligible children in the 15-18 age group will begin from Monday in Madhya Pradesh, an official said on Sunday. Letters were written to all the district collectors in MP in this regard, National Health Mission director Priyanka Das said in an official statement.
"All the eligible persons from the 15-18 age group will be given the second dose of Covid-19 vaccines from Monday. 36.42 lakh eligible children from this age group had received the first dose of vaccines against the target of 48 lakh. Sessions for the second jab for the eligible teens will be organised in the schools, where the first dose was administered. The registration for the second dose will be held on the spot. Those who have completed 28 days after getting the first dose will be eligible for the second dose," she said.
Vaccination of the children from the 15-18 age group began on January 3 in Madhya Pradesh. The Covid-19 tally in Madhya Pradesh rose to 9,59,439 on Sunday after the addition of 9,305 fresh cases, while the death toll increased to 10,616 after nine people succumbed to the coronavirus infection in the last 24 hours, as per the state health department. Maintaining a consistent decline, Delhi reported 3,674 Covid cases on Sunday at a positivity rate of 6.37%. The number of deaths, which as per experts lags around 2 weeks as compared to cases, was still high at 30.

Tamil Nadu on Sunday added 22,238 infections, including a returnee from the United Arab Emirates, pushing the tally to 33,25,940 while 38 more fatalities took the death toll to 37,544, the health department said.
Recoveries outnumbered new cases with 26,624 people getting discharged in the last 24 hours, aggregating to 30,84,470 leaving 2,03,926 active infections, a medical bulletin said.
Chennai, among districts, accounted for the majority of new coronavirus infections with 3,998 fresh cases. The State capital was followed by Coimbatore with 2,865 cases, followed by Chengalpet 1,534, Tiruppur 1,497, Salem 1,181, Erode 1,127. A total of 1,36,952 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, pushing the cumulative number of specimens examined to 6,16,24,216, the bulletin said.

Mumbai reported 1,160 new Covid-19 cases, 2,530 recoveries, and 10 deaths in the last 24 hours. Active cases stand at 10,797.
Odisha recorded the highest daily coronavirus deaths in five months as 19 people, including two babies, succumbed to the infection on Sunday when it logged the lowest number of new cases in 20 days. A three-day-old boy in Bhadrak district and a 1-year-old girl in Ganjam died from the pathogen. Four out of the new fatalities were in Bhubaneswar. The toll in the state due to the pandemic has now mounted to 8594, a bulletin by the health department said.
Odisha logged 4,843 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, the lowest in 20 days and the positivity rate was 7.7 per cent. The infection is down by 43 per cent from 8,520 a week ago. There were 4,842 Covid-19 cases and 15 deaths on Saturday. Khurda district, where Bhubaneswar is located, reported the highest number of 1,023 infections, followed by 735 in Sundargarh and 379 in Cuttack.
As many as 10,267 more patients recuperated and out of 62,858 sample tests 663 children were among the fresh cases, the bulletin said It said 53 Covid-19 patients have died due to comorbidities. The active cases declined to 53,090, including 16,932 in Khurda, which is in the red zone along with Sundargarh and Cuttack, where the number of current infections is over 2,500.
