As per the Union health ministry data updated on Sunday, with 2,34,281 new Coronavirus positive cases on Saturday, India’s total tally of infections has risen to over 4.10 crore. With 893 deaths reported during the 24-hour period, the total toll of fatalities has climbed to 4,94,091, the data updated at 8 am showed.
In a positive sign, the number of active cases decreased by 1,19,396 to reach 18,84,937 — standing at 4.59% of the total infections — while the country’s recovery rate stands at 93.89%. The total number of recoveries have risen to 3,87,13,494, the health bulletin said.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said the decision on reopening schools in the state will be taken after consultation with experts and review of the COVID-19 situation.
The state government had on January 14 ordered closure of schools and hostels for Classes 1 to 12 till January 31 in the wake of a surge in COVID-19 cases at that time.
The CM, while reviewing the COVID-19 situation in the state on Saturday, said COVID-19 cases were coming down in the state, including major cities like Indore, Bhopal, Jabalpur and Gwalior.
“Very few coronavirus patients are admitted in hospitals. The decision on opening schools will be taken after considering the COVID-19 situation in other states…experts will be consulted. Schools will be opened only after full deliberation,” Chouhan said.
There is a possibility that COVID-19 cases will come down by February 15, he said.
Though there is nothing to worry, the administration should continue to adopt COVID-19-appropriate behaviour and follow the mandatory requirement of wearing masks, the CM said.
Health officials informed during the meeting that 72 COVID-19 patients were currently admitted on oxygen beds, while 150 were admitted in the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in the state.
On Saturday, Madhya Pradesh reported 8,678 new COVID-19 cases, raising the state's infection tally to 9,50,134, while five more deaths pushed the toll to 10,607, a health department official earlier said. (PTI)

Chhattisgarh's COVID-19 tally rose to 11,20,797 on Saturday with the addition of 3,783 infections, while the death toll mounted to 13,824 after 15 patients succumbed to the viral infection, an official said. Chhattisgarh's average positivity rate is 8.62 per cent on Saturday, he said. The rate indicates the percentage of people who test positive for the virus of those overall who have been tested. The number of recoveries reached 10,81,858 after 221 people were discharged from hospitals, while 4,555 others completed their home isolation during the day, the official said. Chhattisgarh is now left with 25,115 active cases. (PTI)
Tamil Nadu on Saturday added 24,418 to the list of infections and they included four infected returnees from overseas. This pushed the tally to 33,03,702 till date as the State continued to report a decline in new Covid-19 cases. (PTI)

For the first time in nearly the last two weeks, Gujarat on Saturday reported less than 12,000 new COVID-19 cases while 33 patients died, the highest during the third wave, the health department said. With 11,974 new cases, the tally of infections mounted to 11,44,585 in the state and the death toll to 10,408. Gujarat had reported 10,150 cases on January 16 and 12,753 the day later. At 8, Ahmedabad district reported the highest number of new COVID-19 fatalities, followed by Rajkot, Surat and Bhavnagar which recorded five deaths each. Vadodara saw three deaths due to COVID-19, Anand and Valsad two each. Kheda, Jamnagar and Botad reported one death each. Gujarat's tally of active cases fell below one lakh to 98,021, the department said. With 21,655 patients being discharged in a single day, the number of recoveries in Gujarat rose to 10,36,156, it said. (PTI)
The COVID-19 tally in Madhya Pradesh stood at 9,50,134 on Saturday after the detection of 8,678 cases, while the deaths of five patients in the last 24 hours took the toll to 10,607, a health department official said. The positivity rate, or cases detected per 100 tests, increased to 11.74 percent on Saturday from 10.8 percent the previous day, he pointed out. The recovery count stood at 8,73,485 after 10,576 people were discharged from hospitals during the day, leaving the state with an active tally of 66,042, the official said. (PTI)
Maharashtra's Nashik district on Saturday recorded 2,338 fresh cases of COVID-19 that raised the tally of infections in the region to 4,64,322, an official said. As many as 2,406 patients were discharged from hospitals, while four died of the infection during the day, taking the count of recoveries to 4,38,521 and toll to 8,801, he said. The district is now left with 17,000 active cases, the official said. (PTI)
According to the data shared by Delhi's health department on Saturday, the national capital recorded 4,483 new COVID-19 cases, a positivity rate of 7.41 per cent and 28 deaths. The positivity rate recorded on Saturday was the lowest after January 3, when the corresponding figure had stood at 6.46 per cent, reported PTI.
West Bengal's Covid-19 tally rose to 19,90,179 as 3,512 new cases were recorded on Saturday, according to a health bulletin. Thirty five more Covid-related deaths were recorded in the state taking the toll to 20,550, the bulletin said.
The daily count of new coronavirus infections in Russia spiked above 110,000 on Saturday as the highly contagious omicron variant races through the vast country. The state coronavirus task force reported 113,122 new infections over the past 24 hours _ an all-time high and a sevenfold increase from early in the month, when daily case counts were about 15,000. Mumbai on Saturday recorded 1,411 new Covid-19 cases and 11 fatalities, taking the tally to 10,44,470 and the death toll to 16,602, the BMC was quoted as saying by PTI. The civic body said that the total number of recoveries in Mumbai rose to 10,12,921, leaving the metropolis with 12,187 active cases.
In an interaction with five eastern states on Saturday, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that even though the active cases of COVID-19 in most of the states and the positivity rate have shown a fall in the last two weeks, there is still a need to be vigilant and not lower the guard, reported PTI. The BA.2 sub-lineage of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, which is classed as a variant under investigation in the UK, spreads much faster than the original BA.1 strain but it also seems to show higher vaccine protection, health authorities said. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said that BA.2 has an increased growth rate compared to BA.1 in all regions of England where there are enough cases to assess it. As of January 24, 1,072 genomically confirmed cases of BA.2 have been identified in England and all assessments remain preliminary whilst case numbers are relatively low. (PTI)
The doctor treating singing legend Lata Mangeshkar has confirmed that she has been put off ventilator but is still in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), news agency PTI reported. The 92-year-old singer tested Covid-19 positive with mild symptoms and was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital in south Mumbai on January 8.
Odisha on Saturday recorded 4842 new Coronavirus infections taking the state's tally to 12,41,068, a health bulletin announced. Odisha also recorded 15 fresh fatalities pushing the death toll to 8,575.
MDMK general secretary Vaiko has tested positive for COVID-19 and he has isolated himself at his residence, party sources said on Saturday.Vaiko, a Rajya Sabha MP, had symptoms like fever and headache since January 24 and a test confirmed that he has been infected with coronavirus. The 77-year-old party chief has isolated himself at his home and he is being treated for the infection, sources said. Sikkim recorded 156 new Covis-19 cases on Saturday taking its total tally to 37,972, according to a health bulletin. The death toll remained unchanged at 428 as no new deaths were recorded in last 24 hours. According to the bulletin, East Sikkim reported the highest number of new cases at 87, followed by 45 in West Sikkim, 19 in South Sikkim and five in North Sikkim.
Kerala recorded 50,812 new Covid-19 infections and eight Covid-related deaths on Saturday, news agency PTI reported. According to the health department, 47,649 persons recuperated from the disease, pushing the number of total cured to 55,41,834. The state 3,36,202 active Covid-19 cases.

Delhi recorded 4483 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday, news agency ANI reported. The national capital also recorded 28 deaths and 8807 recoveries.
The number of COVID-19 cases reported in Delhi has reduced significantly in the last one week from over 11,000 cases logged on January 22, but the containment zones count remains over 40,000, according to official data. A containment zone is created by authorities to check the spread of infection if at least three cases of coronavirus are recorded in a household or in a neighbourhood. According to official data shared by the Delhi health department, the number of containment zones in the city stood at 41,095 on Friday, a fall from 42,388 on Thursday. The number of containment zones on January 22 was 43,457 when 11,486 Covid cases were recorded. The number of cases have dropped in the last one week, with over 4,000 cases logged on Friday. However, the number of containment zones are still in the range of over 40,000. (PTI)
Andhra Pradesh logged 11,573 fresh Covid-19 cases in last 24 hours ending 9 AM today, according to a health bulletin. The bulletin further stated that the total recoveries increased to 21,30,162 after 9,445 more people got cured of the infection. The state also recorded three more deaths today taking the overall toll to 14,594.
Doctors at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital have said that veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar's health condition has marginally improved. Dr Pratit Samdani of the hospital was reported by ANI as saying that Lata Mangeshkar's ventilator support was removed two days ago. She, however, continues to be under observation in an ICU.
Puducherry confirmed 855 fresh cases of Covid-19 on Saturday taking the overall case count to 1,59,824.
The new cases identified at the end of examination of 3,465 samples were spread over Puducherry 570, Karaikal 172, Yanam 102 and Mahe 11.
The active cases were 12,542 of whom 182 were in hospitals taking treatment while the remaining 12,360 patients were in home quarantine, Director of Health G Sriramulu said.
He said 2,604 patients recovered and were discharged during last twenty-four hours. The overall recoveries stood at 1,45,359. (PTI)

Indonesia is bracing for a third wave of COVID-19 infections as the highly transmissible omicron variant drives a surge in new cases, health authorities and experts said Saturday.
The country reported 9,905 new infections and seven deaths on Friday in the latest 24-hour period. It was the highest daily caseload since August last year when the country was struggling to contain a delta-driven wave.
