The city witnessed a marginal decrease in its daily tally as compared to the day before when 4,291 new infections were detected.
Meanwhile, on the first day of markets opening without the odd-even rule, shopkeepers were seen directing customers to follow Covid-19 protocols.
Random testing at metro stations and public places has also started with the easing of restrictions in the city. The crowd at markets like Lajpat Nagar, Sarojini Nagar and residential markets was relatively thin.
Strong winds and a minimum temperature of 5 degrees Celsius are on the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast for Delhi on Saturday.
A year after 25-year-old farmer Navreet Singh died during violence that broke out when protesting farmers entered the capital on Republic Day, the Delhi High Court Friday asked the Uttar Pradesh government to respond to his family’s allegations that “serious lapses” were committed during the medical examination following his death, particularly while preparing the X-ray plates.

The Delhi cabinet Friday approved ex-gratia relief of Rs 20,000 per acre to farmers whose lands were damaged by unseasonal rains last year.
In September-October, several acres of farmland were damaged due to incessant rain and waterlogging in fields owing to flooding in nearby natural drains. Following requests by farmers, the government had sent several teams to assess the situation on the ground in October. Read more
THE DELHI High Court on Friday asked the Centre to clarify whether it wants to withdraw its reply which was filed in 2017 in response to the petitions seeking criminalisation of marital rape. The Centre has earlier told the court that it wants to place a fresh and constructive stand before the court in the matter, which has remained pending since 2015.
“Take instructions on that as well,” the court told Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma after advocate Karuna Nundy, representing one of the petitioners, asked whether she should address arguments on Centre’s earlier affidavit or it was being withdrawn. Read more
The Shahdara locality where a woman was paraded with a blackened face and a garland of shoes around her neck, not long after allegedly being raped, is known to be a hotbed of petty crime and bootleg liquor, a combination that, locals say, makes them feel unsafe even in their own homes.

Easing restrictions imposed earlier this month in view of rising Covid-19 cases, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Thursday decided to lift weekend curfew and odd-even rule for shops.

An associate of jailed gangster Neeraj Bawana was shot dead by three armed assailants in the Outer-North district’s Alipur area on Thursday night.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that the gang members of slain gangster Jitender Gogi were responsible for the killing. 18 bullets were shot at the deceased. CCTV cameras have captured the incident which shows three unidentified assailants came on a bike, shot the victim, and fled.
DCP (Outer-North district) Brijendra Kumar Yadav said, “Three PCR calls were received at around 10.44 pm on Thursday night informing that some unknown persons have shot a man. The deceased, identified as Pramod Sing, was taken to Max hospital in Haidarpur where he was declared brought dead. We found nine empty cartridges at the crime scene.” Read full story here

A week after a 50-year-old man was shot dead in Faridabad, police arrested his daughter-in-law for allegedly conspiring to murder him to usurp his property. Cops said the accused had planned the murder and paid Rs 4,000 to a male friend to arrange a gun and sleeping pills.
Bharat Singh was found dead at his house in New Friends Colony, Ballabgarh on the morning of January 21. His wife Jashoda Bhati had filed a complaint stating that when she woke up, she found him dead with blood dripping from his neck. Their daughter-in-law Geeta had been absconding since the incident. The number of coronavirus cases in Delhi dropped below the 5,000-mark on Thursday, 24 days since January 4 when 4,099 cases were reported.

A 20-year-old woman was on Wednesday abducted, allegedly gangraped by her neighbours, and paraded on the streets in Delhi’s Shahdara district, with the accused chopping her hair and forcing her to wear a garland of slippers around her neck.
Police said they have arrested seven women and apprehended two boys from the accused family. Two other accused are on the run. Read more
Doctors, medical staff and civil defence volunteers are tirelessly working to help people with Covid-related matters. In a period of two weeks, the Delhi government’s Covid helpline has received 22,000 calls from the public. A large number of the calls were related to hospital availability, vaccination, e-passes and tele-consultation with doctors. Read more
Delhi administered 70,255 Covid-19 shots on Thursday, of which 13,316 were precaution doses, according to data from the government’s CoWIN portal. The capital has administered 248,029 precaution doses to healthcare workers, frontline workers, and persons over the age of 60 years with comorbidities since the drive was opened up on January 10.
This accounts for approximately 25.5 per cent of the eligible population getting the third precaution dose. There are nearly 240,000 healthcare workers, 350,000 frontline workers, and 380,000 people over the age of 60 years with comorbidities in Delhi who are eligible for a precaution dose. Read more
The Delhi government has initiated its plan to set up smart boards in 20,000 classrooms in its schools by installing them in 16 classrooms in a North Delhi school.
The 16 “smart classrooms” have been set up at Shaheed Amir Chand Sarvodaya Vidyalaya located in Shankaracharya Marg. Reviewing this on Thursday, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said cameras will also be installed in these classrooms to record classes. Read more

The minimum temperature recorded in the early hours of Friday was 6.4 degrees Celsius, three degrees below the normal. The Supreme Court Thursday directed a joint meeting of a secretary-level official of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Director General (Prisons) of Tihar jail and chief secretary of Delhi to take concrete decisions towards implementing the recommendations made in a report by Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana for enhancing security at Tihar jail.
A bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and M R Shah said the meeting should be held within a week and that a comprehensive affidavit indicating the manner in which implementation of the recommendations would be carried out, and the timelines stipulated and steps to be taken, be filed before it.
