Benchmark NSE Nifty closed 167.8 points down at 17110.15 amid selling in frontline bluechip counters.
However, stocks such as IndiaMART, CarTrade Tech, Uniinfo Telecom Serv, Hind Nat Glass and Dynamic Services & Security Ltd., touched their fresh 52-week lows.
Overall, 15 shares ended in the green in Nifty50 index, while 35 closed in the red.
In the Nifty 50 index, Axis Bank, SBI, Maruti Suzuki, Cipla and Kotak Bank were among top gainers during the day, while HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra, Dr. Reddys, TCS and Wipro ended in the red.
The BSE Sensex closed 581.21 points down at 57276.94.
Traders piled up positions in IT - Hardware, Sugar, Media & Entertainment, Telecommunications and Trading sectors, while selling was witnessed in Airlines, Services, IT Enabled Services, IT Software and Beverages - Alcoholic sectors during the day.
