Open schools, all-India wave dip early February, says genomics institute head

Making a strong argument for the reopening of schools, at least in areas where the Covid curve has begun to go down, Dr Anurag Agrawal, director of Delhi-based Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, said on Thursday that the pandemic is now entering a stage where normal activities can resume with relatively small and not very difficult precautions.

Speaking at the Explained.Live event of The Indian Express, Agrawal said that keeping children away from school had potential adverse impacts on their physical and mental development that, in his opinion, was a bigger problem in the current context than the risk of Covid infection.

With the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic showing signs of waning in the national capital, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority has decided to revoke several Covid restrictions, including the weekend curfew and odd-even rule at markets. Cinema halls have also been permitted to open at 50 per cent capacity.

India saw a marginal rise in fresh cases, reporting over 2.86 lakh (2,86,364) in the last 24 hours, ending at 9 am on Thursday. With around 3.06 lakh (3,06,357) recoveries, the number of active cases has declined to 22 lakh (22,02,472). The daily positivity rate has increased slightly to 19.59 per cent, while the weekly positivity rate is now 17.75 per cent.

Explained: BA.2 sub-variant of Omicron – not new, rise mainly in Europe

In the last couple of weeks, there has been a noticeable increase in the discovery of BA.2 sub-variant of Omicron from several countries, leading to fresh worries about the possibility of another surge in cases. Last week, the UK Health Security Agency flagged this sub-variant and designated it as a ‘variant under investigation’. And, in its latest weekly bulletin, the World Health Organisation noted that a number of countries had reported an increase in the BA.2 sub-variant in the last seven days.

This sub-variant has been present in substantial numbers in India as well, but India is not amongst the countries where the recent increase has been noticed. The BA.2 could possibly be more infectious than the more commonly found BA.1 variety but there is no evidence to suggest that it is more harmful.
