With this, the city is now left with 19,808 active cases. Maharashtra, meanwhile, reported 40,805 new cases on Sunday.
A dust storm approached Mumbai, north Konkan, north Madhya Maharashtra districts is prevailing for 12 hours between Sunday noon and early Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. These winds are approaching with a speed of 20 to 30kms/hour. Hazy and cloudy sky conditions were reported over Mumbai, Pune, north Maharashtra and adjoining districts in Gujarat since Sunday morning. Windy conditions, too, were reported from these regions.
In a first, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has started a mobile library facility on three of its airconditioned long-distance buses. Commuters on these buses can now read books by well-known authors on various subjects in Marathi and English. The service, jointly implemented along with the Let’s Read India foundation, would be free of cost.
“The concept of providing a mobile library through the Let's Read India foundation in Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) buses for passengers on long-distance routes, like Mantralaya, is innovative and will encourage people to read more,” said Abhijit Bangar, Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner. “In the first phase, the library facility has been made available on three buses. This will be increased in future."
After the fire that broke out at the Sachinam Heights on Saturday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has directed its chief electrical inspector to conduct electrical audits of all buildings in the city that have a height of 15 meters and above.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) will also be issuing a notice to Sachinam Heights for its non-operational fire-fighting system. “The chief electrical inspector has been directed to conduct an electrical audit of all the high-rise buildings having height 15 meters and above. This will help in reducing fire incidents caused by defective electric circuits,” said a BMC official.
Earlier, the fire brigade officials had said that about 70 per cent of fire incidents in buildings are triggered due to defective electrical circuits. According to the data, around 48,343 fire incidents were reported across the city between 2008 and 2018 of which 32,516 were due to short circuits.
THE BOMBAY High Court recently rejected a pre-arrest bail application by a man booked for posing as Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officers and demanding Rs 20 lakh from a actor after they “caught” her and her friends at a party in Santacruz last month. The HC, while rejecting the plea, held that the offense of “hatching such a plan was serious and no sympathy can be shown to the applicant, whose custodial interrogation was required in the case” based on the evidence produced by the prosecution.

One more person on Monday succumbed to injuries suffered in a fire that broke out in a multi-storey residential building at Tardeo in Mumbai, raising the death toll in the incident to seven, a civic official said. The 38-year-old male patient, who was undergoing treatment at the BYL Nair Hospital, was declared dead at 7 am, the official said as per information received from doctors.
Police have registered an offence and begun a probe after a school in Thane in Maharashtra received an email claiming bomb blasts would take place in public places like colleges and railway stations, an official said on Sunday. The case has been registered under IPC and Information Act provisions, he added.

Maharashtra on Sunday reported 40,805 Covid-19 cases, taking its tally to 75,07,225, while 44 fatalities put the toll at 1,42,115, a health department official said. The discharge of 27,377 people during the day took the recovery count to 70,67,955, leaving the state with 2,93,305 active cases, he said.
With 1,95,256 samples being examined on Sunday, the number of tests in Maharashtra went up to 7,33,69,912, he said. No Omicron case was detected in the state during the day, keeping the tally of those affected by the new variant to 2,759, of which 1,437 have been discharged as well, the official said. The total number of Omicron cases in Mumbai is 1,009 and in Pune city 1,002, he added.

The Brihanmumai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for power generation and purchase on proposed hybrid solar power plant at Balasaheb Thackeray Middle Vaitarna Dam on Sunday.
Under the project, 100 mega watt electricity will be generated. While the hydroelectric power plant, which has been long in planning, will have a capacity of 20 MW, the floating solar photovoltaic power plant can generate as much as 80 MW. The project will take 31 months to complete. Of the total 100 MW, the civic body has planned to augment the power supply in its water supply filtration plants which will help them in saving about Rs 25 crore annually on power bills.
A court in Thane has ordered a functionary of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) to pull down within a month his party's public relations office set up "illegally" on land owned by a temple trust at Ganeshpuri in the district. Bhiwandi civil court judge K G Choudhari had passed the order recently, but its copy was made available on Sunday.
The court asked the office-bearer of the MNS, Sunil Pratap Devre, to remove the encroachment and not to carry out any construction activity there after that. Shree Bhimeshwar Sadguru Nityanand Sanstha, which manages the Nityanand Samadhi temple and other property of the trust, had filed a petition in the court against Devre, alleging that he had constructed the MNS's party office on the plot belonging to the trust.
In the complaint, the trust said that the plot was reserved for parking of vehicles of devotees, who visit the temple. The plot was vacant and the respondent, who is the divisional president of the MNS at Ganeshpuri, set up the 'jansampark' (public relations) office of the party there. The trust had sought court's direction for removal of the structure.

Bhandup police on Friday registered a case of criminal breach of trust against two police constables, including a woman constable, after cash and valuables worth Rs 5.31 lakh seized in different cases went missing from their custody. According to the police, the constables – identified as Nirmala Lohare and Bharat Suryavanshi – were posted at Bhandup station between 2012 and 2019. They were in charge of keeping the seized valuables safe and also had to submit them in court. Read more
Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray, along with his son and Maharashtra Minister Aaditya Thackeray paid their tribute to Bal Thackeray and Netaji Subash Chandra Bose on their birth anniversary, at their residence in Mumbai.
All the four accused, including two minors, who allegedly gang-raped a woman early Saturday in Mumbai were arrested. The woman, who works with a catering service, was returning home around 4.30 am on Saturday when the alleged incident took place.

Thane district in Maharashtra has reported 2,743 new coronavirus positive cases, which took its infection count to 6,90,601, and the death of 12 patients pushed the number of deceased to 11,708, an official said on Sunday. These cases and fatalities were recorded on Saturday, he said.
Thane's Covid-19 mortality rate is 1.69 per cent at present. In neighbouring Palghar district, the caseload has grown to 1,59,848 and the death toll stood at 3,358, another official said. (PTI)
Mumbai police have registered six accidental death reports (ADRs) in connection with the fire that broke out in a residential building in Tardeo area of central Mumbai, which claimed six lives and left 23 others injured, an official said on Sunday. The blaze had erupted on Saturday around 7.30 am at Sachinam Heights, a ground-plus-20-storey building located opposite Bhatia Hospital at Gowalia Tank.
"As the fire claimed the lives of six persons, separate accidental death reports were registered at the Gamdevi police station on Saturday night," the police official said. The police are waiting for a report by the fire department as well as the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport's (BEST) electricity wing to know the exact cause of the fire, although the preliminary investigation has revealed that it broke out due to a power short circuit, he said.
