At least seven people died and 15 others were injured after a fire broke out at a residential building in South Mumbai early on Saturday. The fire broke out at around 7.28 am on the 18th floor of the 20-storey Kamala Building in Tardeo.
Of those injured, three are said to be critical and have been admitted to the Intensive Care Units of nearby hospitals. The injured were taken to state-run Nair Hospital, Kasturba Hospital and Bhatia Hospital.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade categorised it as a Level 3 (major) fire. Officials said that the fire was brought under control at around 10 am and cooling operations were underway.
Mayor Kishori Pednekar, while taking stock of the situation, said some of those hospitalised were facing difficulty in breathing due to suffocation. She added that initial impressions suggest that the fire could have been caused because of a short circuit.
The residents heard the sound of sparks and then saw smoke, following which the evacuation started. A police official present at the spot said that the fire reportedly started on the 15th floor and then spread to the floors above.
