Meanwhile, a major fire broke out early on Saturday morning at the 20-storey Kamala building near Mumbai’s Bhatia hospital in Tardeo. At least 2 people have died and 15 were injured in the blaze. At least 13 fire tenders were rushed to the spot to control the blaze.
On the weather front, Mumbai and its surrounding areas are likely to get light rain and thundershowers on Saturday. The city is also expected to see a drop in temperature in the coming days.
In other news, dismissed Mumbai Police officer Sachin Waze on Friday cross-examined former home minister Anil Deshmukh at a hearing of the Chandiwal Commission. Waze is currently lodged at Taloja jail in connection with the Ambani terror scare case, while Deshmukh is at Arthur Road jail in connection with a money laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate.
Mumbai Police have arrested a 29-year-old man for allegedly molesting and robbing a 26-year-old lawyer while she was withdrawing money inside an ATM in Andheri (East). The incident took place at around 8.40 pm at Agarkar chowk near Andheri railway station. The accused has been identified as Avinash Kasar. The victim was withdrawing money at an ATM run by Bank of Baroda when Kasar allegedly came from behind.
After an FIR was registered, Andheri police checked the CCTV footage of the ATM and nearby areas to locate the accused. While going through footage from stations, it was found that the accused had changed four local trains — from Andheri, he got down at Goregaon station, then took another train to Ram Mandir, another one to Borivali and finally took the last train to Nalasopara.
The Bombay High Court on Friday stayed for a month the operation of an order passed by the Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT), which had directed the Kotak Mahindra Bank to restore possession of a property, a secured asset, to Nirvan Birla, son of businessman Yashovardhan (Yash) Birla.
A division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Anil S Kilor was hearing a plea by the Kotak Mahindra Bank, the secured creditor, challenging a November 26, 2021 order passed by DRT-II, Mumbai on securitisation application of respondent Nirvan Birla under the Securitisation and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest (SARFAESI) Act, 2002.
The DRT had directed the bank to restore possession of the disputed property, a row house at Kemps corner in the city, in favour of Nirvan Birla, to the extent of his shares in the same by January 22. Aggrieved by the order, the bank had filed an appeal before the Debts Recovery Appellate Tribunal (DRAT), Mumbai. However, prior to preferring such appeal, it had also filed a writ plea in HC seeking relief.

The case fatality rate in the state stands at 1.91 per cent. Of 144 patients with Omicron infection reported during the day, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) reported 124 cases, Solapur eight, Pune Rural six, and Parbhani, Jalgaon, Mumbai, Raigad, Satara and Beed recorded one case each.
