
Delhi Live News: Delhi on Friday reported 10,756 new Covid-19 cases and 38 deaths in the last 24 hours, with the positivity rate at 18.04 percent, according to city health department. Currently, there are at least 61,954 active cases in the city while cumulative infections stand at 17,71,028. So far, 434 people have died due to the virus this month.
Meanwhile Delhi L-G Anil Baijal Friday rejected the government’s proposal to lift weekend curfew and ease Covid-19 restrictions. He, however, allowed private offices to reopen with 50 per cent capacity. He said the restrictions needed to remain in place till cases reduce and the situation improves.
Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Friday said that the danger of Covid has subsided in Delhi and the situation is “quite under control”.
The business fraternity in the city Friday expressed disappointment over the DDMA’s decision to keep in place the weekend curfew and odd-even rule for shops and said they will stage protests across the city if the decision is not revised in the next 2-3 days.
A Delhi court will look into whether two separate FIRs filed in the same case against engineering student Vishal Sudhirkumar Jha (21), one of the accused in the GitHub app case in which photographs of 100 Muslim women were hosted without their consent, can be legally investigated.
Jha, a second-year civil engineering student studying in Bengaluru, was arrested by the Mumbai Police earlier this month. He was the first of the four people to be arrested in connection with the app. Read more
The Delhi Police Cyber Cell has summoned an 18-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow to join the investigation after it was found that he had allegedly created a group on the Clubhouse app, where several users allegedly made derogatory remarks against Muslim women.
On Saturday, Delhi Police said they have identified the ID of user – Bismillah as Rahul Kapoor, a graduate student, whose father is working as an accountant in Army Public school, Lucknow Cantt. “He was traced and during questioning, he disclosed that he was asked by Sallos to create an audio chat room in Clubhouse. He created a chat room and handed over the moderator key to Sallos. We have seized his mobile phone and served him a notice. He is joining the investigation in Delhi on Saturday evening,” a senior police officer said. Read more
The Faridabad police on Friday booked a woman for allegedly murdering her father-in-law over a property-related dispute. The woman and an unidentified associate allegedly conspired to murder the man to usurp his property, said the police.
According to the police, the incident took place late on Thursday night when the victim, Bharat Singh Bhati, a resident of New Friends Colony in Ballabgarh, and his wife Jashoda Bhati were asleep in their room. The accused Gita is missing, said the police. Read more
The pace of precautionary doses being administered in Delhi has dropped significantly as just 10,862 people were inoculated on Friday, taking the week’s average to 14,348 doses, compared to 21,016 shots the previous week, data from the CoWIN portal revealed.
The total number of precautionary doses administered has crossed the 200,000-mark in twelve days since the drive was opened up for healthcare workers, frontline workers, and those over the age of 60 with comorbidities. Read more

A western disturbance has brought rainfall to parts of northwest India. A cyclonic circulation associated with the western disturbance lies over south Pakistan and adjoining southwest Rajasthan. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), western disturbances are storms that originate in the Mediterranean Sea, Caspian Sea or Black Sea and move eastwards across north India, bringing winter rainfall. A deputy commandant of the Border Security Force is in the dock for allegedly orchestrating a Rs 140 crore scam in Gurgaon. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has found that the main accused, Praveen Yadav, allegedly posed as an IPS officer on deputation on the National Security Guard’s campus in Manesar and allegedly conned contractors on the pretext of allotting tenders for construction work on the campus.
Police have recovered Rs 13.81 crore in cash and six luxury cars (Harrier, Range Rover, Jeep, BMW, Safari and Volvo) from his possession. Earlier this week, police had raided the residence of a relative of Yadav and recovered gold worth over Rs 1 crore. The relative is absconding. Read more
A 50-year-old man set himself on fire outside the Supreme Court Friday afternoon, with an initial investigation revealing that he used to work at a factory in Noida but hadn’t been paid for three months. Moreover, his employer sacked him recently.
“Eyewitnesses told police the incident took place around 2 pm outside the Supreme Court’s new building, where the man came and set himself on fire. The fire was doused by security personnel and he was taken to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital (LNJP), where his condition is said to be stable and he is recuperating,” an officer said. Covid cases have reduced further in the capital, with 10,756 fresh infections recorded on Friday. The positivity rate also dipped below 20% after almost two weeks — it stood at 18.04%, meaning less than one in five samples tested were found to have the infection.

An 11-year-old boy died after allegedly accidentally shooting himself at his house in Nuh Thursday morning. The boy’s parents had gone to a police station to settle an old case that his mother had filed against her husband, said police.
Police said the incident was reported around 11 am when the boy’s neighbour heard a gunshot and rushed to the house. In the police complaint, he said he saw the boy lying on a cot with a country-made gun near him. “He was bleeding profusely from the chest and was motionless. I asked his 9-year-old sister about what had transpired and she said he was playing with the gun,” he said. Read more

Following the Delhi Lieutenant Governor’s decision to not lift the weekend curfew and odd-even restrictions at markets and malls, several traders from Sadar Bazar and Sarojini Nagar held a protest and sought permission to reopen all shops. Some traders’ associations have also written to the L-G, requesting him to withdraw both restrictions.
Raising slogans and holding placards saying, “L-G sir please help”, “save our businesses”, “end odd-even plan”, “odd-even killing our business, please help”, the Federation of Sadar Bazar Traders’ Association stated, “Cases are declining at a very fast pace. Why can’t the restrictions be lifted?”

The Delhi government will conduct a large-scale survey to understand the impact of the Covid pandemic on the psychological and emotional behaviour of school children, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said.
The last two years have been really tough and very stressful for school children. Due to school closure students have been confined to their homes, which is leading to a situation of fear and stress among them, he said.
"It is important to understand their mental state, to bring them back to the normal situation. In view of this, we have decided to conduct the study on a large-scale to understand the changes in mental and emotional state of school children in the past two years and what steps can be taken for their well-being," Sisodia, who also holds the education portfolio, said. The number of Covid cases in Delhi has come down after registering a record surge a week ago, but the daily fatalities trend needs to be watched for the next few days to tell if the death count has reached its peak, according to medical experts.
Senior doctors at leading Covid facilities, both state-run and private, have emphasised that the peak in death cases happen generally a week or two after the peak in the daily cases tally.
Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Thursday had said that it seems the peak of the third Covid wave in the national capital has gone past, even as he cautioned that the city was not out of the danger zone yet. (PTI)
Ahead of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's 125th birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that a grand statue of the iconic freedom fighter will be installed at India Gate as a symbol of India's "indebtedness" to him.
Till the statue, made of granite, is completed, a hologram statue of his would be present at the same place, he said, adding that he will unveil the hologram statue on January 23, the birth anniversary of the Azad Hind Fauj founder.
Official sources told PTI that the dimensions of the granite statue will be 28 feet long and six feet wide and added that its installation will be a case of India "reclaiming" its history. The statue will be installed under a canopy, which used to have a statue of King George V that was removed in 1968.
A man, who attempted suicide outside the Supreme Court complex on Friday, is out of danger, according to the Delhi Police.
The police found out during their inquiry that the man was not receiving his salary for the last three months from the management of a factory.
The government has put out the eternal flame of the Amar Jawan Jyoti underneath India Gate and merge it with the one instituted at the National War Memorial in 2019 a few hundred meters away.
Since the political controversy broke out government sources have claimed, giving a “correct perspective” that the flame will not be extinguished, but just moved to be merged with the one at the National War Memorial. Sources said that the eternal flame paid homage to the soldiers killed in the 1971 War, but does not mention their name, and the India Gate is a “symbol of our colonial past”.

A 50-year-old man allegedly tried to set himself on fire outside the Supreme Court in New Delhi on Friday afternoon.He was taken to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where he is recuperating and police are trying to contact his family.
According to the police, the man has been identified as Rajbabu Gupta, who works in a factory in Noida Sector 128. “We received a call around 2.20pm that a man had tried to self-immolate and that he was stopped by the security personnel. Police rushed to the spot and the victim was taken to hospital,” a police officer said. An inquiry is on to ascertain why Gupta had allegedly attempted to kill himself. The police said they suspected some family dispute behind the suicide attempt.
