Mumbai Live News: Mumbai on Thursday reported 5,708 new Covid-19 cases along with 12 deaths and 15,440 recoveries. The active cases in the fianancial capital is at 22,103.

Schools across Maharashtra will reopen for all classes from January 24, Maharashtra School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad said. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray agreed to a proposal to this effect during a Cabinet meeting on Thursday.

With the plateauing of the third wave in Mumbai, the daily Covid-19 cases dropped to 6,032 with only 10 per cent test positivity rate (TPR) reported on Wednesday. However, despite the drop in cases in the state capital, due to the gradual spread of the virus to other districts, Maharashtra recorded 43,697 cases with 20.66 per cent TPR. Of the 214 patients found to be infected with the Omicron variant in the state, 31 cases were reported from Mumbai.

ISL game between Mumbai and Jamshedpur postponed

The Indian Super League match between Jamshedpur FC and Mumbai City FC, scheduled for Friday, has been postponed as many players representing the teams are down with the COVID-19 virus.

"Hero Indian Super League (ISL) Match No. 67 between Jamshedpur FC and Mumbai City FC scheduled for Friday, January 21, 2022, at Athletic Stadium, Bambolim, stands postponed," the league organisers said in a statement.

"The decision was taken considering advice from the League's medical team on Jamshedpur FC's inability to safely field a team and prepare for the match," the ISL added in its statement. (PTI)

After Mumbai, Thane city may get property tax waiver for homes measuring up to 500 sq ft

Maharashtra Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday said the MVA government is contemplating waiving property tax on houses with an area of up to 500 sq ft in Thane city - after a similar relief for Mumbai residents - and added the issue was discussed by the state cabinet.

Speaking to reporters after the weekly cabinet meeting here, he said a proposal to waive property tax on houses with an area of up to 500 sq ft in Thane city was discussed in the meet.

Recently, the government decided not to levy property tax on housing units with an area of up to 500 sq ft in Mumbai.

Elections to Mumbai and Thane municipal corporations are scheduled soon. Both the civic bodies are ruled by the Shiv Sena, which heads the three-party Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in the state. (PTI)

35-year old inmate dies by 'suicide' in Arthur Road Jail, Mumbai

A 35-year-old inmate at the Arthur Road Jail, in Mumbai died allegedly by suicide Thursday morning, news agency ANI reported. The Jail authorities said that the Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered in the matter and further investigation is underway.

Thane: Seven arrested for theft of petroleum products

Thane Police has arrested seven persons for allegedly stealing petroleum products worth crores of rupees from a storage tank in south Mumbai, an official said on Thursday.

The Anti Extortion Cell (AEC) of Thane crime branch raided a dhaba (eatery) at Ambernath in the district on Wednesday and seized stolen products and four tankers, altogether worth Rs 1.03 crore, he said.

Senior inspector Sanjay Shinde of the AEC said the accused pilfered petroleum-derived industrial chemicals from the storage tank of an Ambernath-based firm at Sewree in south Mumbai. The stolen chemicals were ferried to a dhaba at Ambernath by tankers and then sold off, he said. (PTI)

CIDCO official held for taking bribe from contractor in Navi Mumbai

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Maharashtra's Thane has arrested an engineer of the City Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe from a contractor, an official said on Thursday.

A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against executive engineer Kalyan Patil (57), a Class 1 officer based in CBD Belapur area of Navi Mumbai, deputy superintendent of police Thane ACB Maya More said.

The accused had allegedly demanded Rs 3 lakh from the contractor releasing six outstanding bills for painting a bridge and sanitising the Kharghar railway station complex and skywalk, he said. (PTI)

Central Railway announces 14-hour infrastructure block on Thane-Diva stretch

The Central Railway will be operating a 14-hour infrastructure block on the Down fast line between Thane and Diva stations on Sunday to carry out a cut and connection of the old redundant slow line with the existing fast lines and commission the crossovers in connection with the Thane-Diva 5th and 6th lines.

The block will be operated for 14 hours on the Down fast line (towards Kasarat Karjat from CSMT) from 1:20 am to 3:20 pm on January 23.

During the block period, trains will run on the UP and Down slow lines between Diva and Thane instead of the fast lines. (Read more)

Ban on local train travel for unvaccinated is in public interest, Maha govt tells HC

The prohibition on travel by local trains in Mumbai by those who are not fully vaccinated against coronavirus is legal and "reasonable", the Maharashtra government told the Bombay High Court on Thursday.

Senior advocate Anil Anturkar, the government's lawyer, said though such a restriction encroaches on the fundamental right to move freely under Article 19 (1)(d) of the Constitution, it is "reasonable" in view of the pandemic.

"This is a reasonable restriction imposed on the citizen's fundamental right and such prohibition has been imposed in the larger public interest, for their own benefit," he said.

He was arguing before a bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice M S Karnik during the final hearing on Public Interest Litigations challenging the ban on travel by local trains by those who have not taken both the doses of vaccine. The notification requiring vaccination certificate for local train travel was issued in August 2021. (PTI)

Pregnant forest guard beaten up by couple in Maharashtra's Satara, duo held

A former sarpanch and his wife allegedly thrashed an on-duty woman forest guard, who is three months pregnant, along with her husband at a village in Satara district of Maharashtra, following which the accused couple has been arrested, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place on Wednesday at Palsawade village in the western Maharashtra district, located around 120 kms from here, and a complaint in this connection was lodged by the woman forest guard, they said.

According to police, the accused man, Ramchandra Jankar, who is president of the village forest management committee, was angry with the woman forest guard for taking the contractual forest labourers along with her 'without his permission'.

Sharing the video on his Twitter handle on Thursday, Maharashtra Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray said, 'The accused has been arrested this morning and will face the law at its strictest. Such acts will not be tolerated.' Satara Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajay Kumar Bansal said the accused is a former sarpanch of the village and president of the local forest management committee. No bail to accused in hate app case

Niraj Bishnoi, creator of the Bulli Bai app and Aumkareshwar Thakur, creator of Sulli Deals app, were Thursday denied bail by a Bandra magistrate court and sent to police custody till January 27. They had earlier been arrested by a Delhi special cell too.

Maharashtra approves offline operations of schools for all classes

In a major development, the Maharashtra government approved offline operations of schools for all classes from Monday. The local administrations will take final decisions based on Covid conditions in the region. The state school education department had sent this proposal to the Chief Minister Office on Wednesday which has been approved.

While all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) remain same from the last time when the schools had resumed offline classes; the new order includes even pre-primary sections which until now were out of the picture, in school reopening decisions. (Read more)

Creator of Bullibai and Sulli deals apps presented before Bandra Magistrate Court

Niraj Bishnoi, creator of 'Bullibai' application and Aumkareshwar Thakur, creator of 'Sulli deals' application brought back to Mumbai for hearing in the Bandra magistrate court. Proceedings to start shortly.

Both the accused were earlier arrested by Delhi special cell IFSO unit. The bail applications of all three accused Vishal KumarJha, 21, Mayank Rawat, 21, and Shweta Singh, 18, have been rejected by the court. The three will now have to move Sessions court for bail.

Chain-snatcher on run for years nabbed in Thane district

A man wanted for a series of chain-snatchings and vehicle thefts, who had been on the run for five years, was apprehended by the police in Maharashtra's Thane district, an official said on Thursday.

Based on a tip-off, a team from the Manpada police station in Dombivili nabbed Hasnaian Gulamraza Sayyed alias Irani (28) of Ambivili in Kalyan, Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Gunjal said. The police had been on the lookout for the accused for the last five years, he said.

Several cases have been registered against the accused at Manpada, Shivaji Nagar, Ambernath, Narpoli, Bhiwandi, Rabale, Navi Mumbai police stations and Bengaluru city police station of Karnataka, the official said.

The police have seized two mobile phones, two motorcycles and 30 gm of gold, valued at Rs. 2.61 lakh, from the accused, he said, adding that Irani has admitted his guilt in eight cases. The accused was also involved in cases in Khadakpada, Kalyan, Wagle Estate, Khandeshwar, Navi Mumbai, Satara city, Satara, Hadapsar, Kothrud, Pune, totalling 20 offences registered against him, it was stated. Hate app case: Accused arrested from Odisha is MBA graduate

28-year-old Neeraj Singh, who was arrested from Odisha in the case pertaining to an app that hosted phots of Muslim women for 'auction', is a MBA graduate. Along with co-accused Neeraj Bishnoi, he planned the Bulli Bai app. "His role came to light during the interrogation of the accused who were arrested earlier, following which a team of the cyber police station was sent to Odisha and he was placed under arrest," the official said.

Singh is being brought to Mumbai and will be produced in a court.

Schools across Maharashtra to reopen from Monday

'Modi' remark row: Mumbai BJP chief, party workers booked for holding protest near Mantralaya

Police have registered a case against BJP's Mumbai unit chief Mangal Prabhat Lodha and 31 others for staging a protest near the Mantralaya.

The protest was organised by the BJP on Wednesday against Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole's remarks referring to 'Modi', he said.

During the protest, police took Lodha and others into custody and they were taken to the Marine Drive police station later, he said, adding they were booked under section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). (PTI)

Explained: Supreme Court’s OBC data order and its impact on Maharashtra urban local body polls

The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Maharashtra government to submit data on Other Backward Classes (OBCs) to the Maharashtra State Commission for Backward Classes (MSCBC) to examine its correctness and make recommendations on their representation in elections for the local bodies.

The SC’s order on Wednesday has come as a relief to the MVA government which has been fighting to restore the OBC quota in the local bodies after the apex court read it down on March 4 last year.

Thane police arrest Kalicharan Maharaj in Raipur for remarks against Mahatma Gandhi

Police in Maharashtra's Thane city have arrested Hindu religious leader Kalicharan Maharaj in Chhattisgarh in connection with a case registered against him here for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Mahatma Gandhi.

He was arrested late on Wednesday night in Chhattisgarh capital Raipur, where he was lodged in a jail in a similar case filed against him there. He is being brought to Thane on a transit remand and would be presented in a local court by Thursday evening, the official of the Naupada police station said. (PTI)

Maharashtra govt proposes reopening school campuses from Monday

The Maharashtra School Education department has proposed reopening of schools for offline classes from Monday. The proposal has been sent to the Chief Minister’s Office and a decision is expected in the cabinet meeting on Thursday.

According to the office of Varsha Gaikwad, school education minister, the proposal seeks granting permission to restart offline operations of schools based on decisions taken by local administrations.

Central Railway announces 14- hour mega block over weekend

The Central Railway has announced a 14-hour `block' or stoppage of traffic between Thane and Diva stations in Thane district which will start little after Saturday midnight.

The purpose was to carry out "cut and connection of newly laid track and commissioning of crossovers," the CR said in a release on Wednesday.

Several long distance trains and suburban locals will be cancelled, said a senior railway official. (PTI)

Meanwhile, as part of a major anti-encroachment drive in Mumbai suburban railway network, the railway authorities are sending eviction notices to people illegally occupying railway premises across Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The move comes after Railway Board Member (Infrastructure) Sanjeev Mittal ordered all zonal railways to remove encroachers by conducting eviction proceedings. Following this, an anti-encroachment drive was started by the Western Railway (WR) and Central Railway (CR) with eviction notices being sent to all encroachers. An official said an action taken report has to be sent to the Railway Board by month end.
