Live news updates: Aparna Yadav, sister-in-law of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav's, on Wednesday joined the BJP weeks before the two parties fight each other in Uttar Pradesh elections.
India reported 282,970 new cases of Covid-19 and 441 deaths from the disease, said the health ministry on Wednesday.
Total cases increased to 37.9 million and total fatalities to 487,202, said the ministry. The country has 8,961 cases of the fast-spreading Omicron coronavirus variant. The positivity rate increased from 14.43 per cent to 15.13 per cent, referring to the measure of cases that turn out to be positive for every hundred tests for Covid-19.
Aparna is married to Pratik, the son of SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav. She is joining the BJP after the exit of three UP ministers and several MLAs left the party to join Akhilesh’s side.
The Aam Aadmi Party on Wednesday named lawyer Amit Palekar as its chief ministerial candidate in the Goa elections. "Goa is yearning for political change,” said AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal at an event.
