Omicron Variant Cases and Deaths in India Live, Covid-19 Booster Vaccine Registration January 19 Live Updates: India reported 2,82,970 fresh Coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, 44,889 cases more than yesterday, taking its overall tally of Covid-19 cases to 3,79,01,241, which includes 8,961 cases of the Omicron variant, according to data from the Union Health Ministry on Wednesday. The number of active Covid-19 cases in the country has increased to 18,31,000, the highest in 232 days. The active cases stood at 18,95,520 on May 31 last year. With 441 fresh fatalities, the Covid-19 death toll has surged to 4,87,202, the Health Ministry said.
The recent Covid-19 surge, led by the Omicron variant, has started showing a declining trend in most of the cities in India. Mumbai has witnessed the sharpest fall in new Coronavirus infections. Delhi and Kolkata, along with a few other cities, too, have seen a similar trend. Chennai is also showing distinct signs of a slowdown, though the cases have not begun to decline. The number of fresh Coronavirus infections in the country has started declining significantly in the past few days. The positivity rate has also dropped. Infections in the top 15 districts have declined to 37.4% in January, from 67.9% in December, according to Union Health Ministry’s data.
Has the third wave peaked in India? Not yet! As many as 10 of these top 15 districts are major cities and among them, Bengaluru and Pune still have higher infection rates. Even though the share of rural districts in new caseloads has increased significantly since December, a report by SBI Research said the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic is likely to peak much earlier than anticipated and may take a maximum of three more weeks. So, the worst is not over yet.

Six passengers, including three women, were not allowed to board Air India's Dubai-bound flight at the Indore airport on Wednesday after they were found infected with coronavirus, a health official said. “As per protocol, every passenger boarding the weekly Indore-Dubai flight has to undergo a rapid RT-PCR test at the airport. On Wednesday, 67 passengers were tested and the results of six passengers came out positive,” Dr Priyanka Kourav, medical officer of the Madhya Pradesh health department, told PTI. She said that two of the six infected passengers are from Bhopal and four from Indore. (PTI)
Puducherry confirmed 1,849 fresh coronavirus infections during the last 24 hours as against 2093 cases reported on Tuesday, registering a dip in number of new cases. The cumulative active cases however rose to 11, 344 as against 10,393 recorded on Tuesday. A release from the Director of Health and Family Welfare Services G Sriramulu said Puducherry region alone accounted for 1,316 fresh cases out of the total 1849 cases while Karaikal had 447, Mahe 28 and Yanam 58. The overall tally of cases of infection was 1,42,559. The Director said 895 patients recovered and were discharged during last 24 hours. The overall recoveries stood at 1,29,319. (PTI)
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday said his government will re-examine the COVID-19 curbs that are in place, and will take a decision regarding relaxation, including the weekend curfew on January 21. The Chief Minister, who had tested positive for COVID on January 10, today resumed his day-to-day work from office, after recovery. “On Friday, I will hold a meeting with experts, and will re-examine the curbs that have been enforced,” he said. Albert Bourla, chairman and chief executive of global pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc., was awarded on Wednesday the prestigious Genesis Prize for his efforts in leading the development of a COVID-19 vaccine. The $1 million award is granted each year to a person for their professional achievements, contributions to humanity and commitment to Jewish values. The Genesis Prize Foundation said Bourla had received the largest number of votes in an online campaign in which some 200,000 people in 71 countries participated. (AP)
Ladakh has reported 164 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the total number of cases in the union territory to 23,700, officials said on Wednesday. The union territory has recorded 222 Covid-related deaths — 164 in Leh and 58 in Kargil — since the outbreak of the pandemic last year, they said. There was no death reported from the union territory on Tuesday, they said, adding that active cases rose to 965. (PTI)

As many as 499 police personnel were found infected with coronavirus in Maharashtra in the last 24 hours, an official said on Wednesday. The infected personnel include 95 police officers. He said 821 police officers and 3,269 police personnel (total 4,090) currently remain admitted at various facilities, including home isolation, in Maharashtra. The total number of infected police officers in Maharashtra is 5,854 since the outbreak of the pandemic in March 2020. A total of 40,959 police personnel, ranging from the rank of the constable to assistant sub-inspector, were found infected in the state, he added. (PTI)
The Japanese government will place Tokyo and a dozen other areas under new restrictions for COVID-19 effective Friday, allowing local leaders to shorten hours for eateries, as a surge in omicron cases threatens to paralyze society. A government-commissioned experts' panel on Wednesday approved a plan to put the 13 areas under a three-week restraint through Feb. 13, said Economy Revitalization Minister Daishiro Yamagiwa, who is also in charge of virus measures. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is expected to officially announce the new measures at a government taskforce meeting later Wednesday. (AP)
Arunachal Pradesh's COVID-19 tally rose to 57,387 as 350 more people tested positive for the infection on Wednesday, 54 less than the previous day, a senior health official said. The northeastern state on Tuesday had reported 404 new COVID-19 cases, the highest single-day spike this month. Of the 350 fresh cases, 115 were registered in the Capital Complex Region, 40 from West Kameng, Namsai (37), Papumpare (30), Changlang (27), East Siang and Lohit with 18 cases each and Lower Dibang Valley reported 17 cases, the official said. Two army men, one person each from NDRF and CRPF were among the fresh cases, State Surveillance Officer (SSO) Dr Lobsang Jampa said. (PTI)
Odisha on Wednesday recorded 11,607 new COVID-19 cases, 521 more than the previous day, with the tally rising to 11,67,094, a health department bulletin said. The death toll mounted to 8,494 with six fresh COVID fatalities, the highest single-day count in more than three months, it said. Fifty-three other coronavirus-positive patients have died due to comorbidities so far, the bulletin said. At least 991 children were among the new patients and the positivity ratio stood at 16.7 per cent as the fresh infections were detected from 69,502 sample tests in the last 24 hours, it said. (PTI)
The $350 billion in coronavirus relief funds for state and local governments has allowed U.S. cities to respond stronger and more nimbly to an ever changing COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Wednesday. In remarks prepared for delivery to a meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Yellen said state and local governments have been creative in using the funding from last year's American Rescue Plan to meet different needs at different times. “This, I think, is some of what the $350 billion did: When Omicron started spreading around our cities, it did not find them broke and broken; it found them much readier to respond,” she said, referring to the State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund. The number of active COVID-19 cases in Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 460 as 84 more people tested positive for the infection, while 73 patients were cured of the disease in the last 24 hours, an official said on Wednesday. The fresh infections raised the tally in the Union Territory to 8,779, he said. Altogether 8,190 people have so far recovered from the disease in the archipelago. (PTI)

The Delhi government deployed senior nursing officers from public hospitals as nodal officers to monitor the management of Covid patients and vaccination at private facilities. Government hospitals have also been asked to find suitable replacements for retired and transferred nursing personnel. “The competent authority is pleased to deploy senior nursing officers as nodal officers in various private health care facilities from Delhi government hospitals to monitor the management of Covid -19 patients along with monitoring of Covid vaccination,” read an order issued by the health department on Tuesday. With the addition of 3,895 new coronavirus positive cases, the infection count in Thane district of Maharashtra rose to 6,77,555, an official said on Wednesday. These cases were reported on Tuesday, he said. With six more patients succumbing to the coronavirus infection, the death toll in the district has gone up to 11,670. Two Mathura courts were closed for two days for a comprehensive sanitisation, a day after a judicial officer and five employees there tested positive for Covid, officials said on Tuesday. “A judicial officer and five employees were found Covid positive when they were on duty on Monday,” DGC (Civil) Sanjai Gaur said. He said on the orders of District Judge Rajeev Bharti, the courts remained closed on Tuesday for comprehensive sanitisation. (PTI)
The worst of the coronavirus pandemic, deaths, hospitalisations and lockdowns, could be over this year if huge inequities in vaccinations and medicines are addressed quickly, the head of emergencies at the World Health Organisation said Tuesday. Dr. Michael Ryan, speaking during a panel discussion on vaccine inequity hosted by the World Economic Forum, said “we may never end the virus” because such pandemic viruses “end up becoming part of the ecosystem.” But “we have a chance to end the public health emergency this year if we do the things that we've been talking about,” he said.
