Live news updates: The Aam Aadmi Party on Wednesday named lawyer Amit Palekar as its chief ministerial candidate in the Goa elections. "Goa is yearning for political change,” said leader at an event.

India is extending its suspension of international commercial passenger commercial flights till February 28 this year, said the country’s aviation regulator on Wednesday. The restriction doesn’t apply to approved cargo flights and will not affect travel under the bubble arrangement with other countries.

India reported 282,970 new cases of Covid-19 and 441 deaths from the disease, said the health ministry on Wednesday.

Total cases increased to 37.9 million and total fatalities to 487,202, said the ministry. The country has 8,961 cases of the fast-spreading Omicron variant. The positivity rate increased from 14.43 per cent to 15.13 per cent, referring to the measure of cases that turn out to be positive for every hundred tests for Covid-19.
