Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Monday said corona cases have decreased in the city over the last four days as the weekend curfew is proving to work and assured migrant workers there will be no lockdown in the national capital. He said the vaccination drive in Delhi completed one year on Monday and a total of 2.85 crore doses have been administered so far. In a statement, Jain said no prescription is required to get tested if people are showing any symptoms of coronavirus. He said Delhi recorded approximately 24,383, 20,178, and 18,286 COVID positive cases on January 14, January 15, and January 17, respectively. “Weekend curfews have played a significant role in this decline. However, this trend indicates that the number of cases in Delhi is decreasing, but the government is still keeping a close eye on the covid cases. “It will take some time to understand the trend forward. There is no lockdown in Delhi and the migrant workers should not be worried,” Jain said in the statement. According to the data provided by the health department, the national capital recorded 12,527 COVID-19 cases on Monday with a positivity rate of 27.99 per cent. Twenty-four people lost their lives to the virus on Sunday, as per the data. Earlier in the day, Jain told reporters that the city was likely to witness 4,000-5,000 less COVID-19 cases on Monday than the numbers reported on Sunday. He congratulated healthcare workers and front-line workers on completing a year of the vaccination drive and said that the Delhi government has an adequate supply of vaccines. “First dose of Covid vaccine has been given to 100 per cent of the eligible population in Delhi while both doses have been given to 80 per cent of the targeted people. “As many as 1.27 lakh precautionary doses have been administered to senior citizens, frontline workers and healthcare workers,” Jain said. He added that out of 1.27 lakh precautionary doses, nearly 35,000 have been administered to senior citizens, 60,000 to frontline workers, and 32,000 to healthcare workers. He added that health system in Delhi is in a good shape and the government is fully prepared to deal with the most serious of situations. Jain urged people to wear masks at all times and adhere to all covid protocols such as maintaining social distancing, hand sanitisation at regular intervals. (PTI)

Greece on Monday imposed a vaccination mandate for people over age 60, as coverage remains below the European Union average and a recent spike in infections has sustained pressure on hospitals. Older people failing to get vaccinated will face penalties, starting at a 50-euro ($57) fine in January and followed by a monthly fine of 100 euros ($114) after that. About two-thirds of Greece's 10.7 million population is currently fully vaccinated — the EU average is just over 70%. The rate of death and daily hospitalisations has increased following the recent spread of the omicron variant, though pressure on ICU capacity has eased slightly. Health Minister Thanos Plevris said fines would be collected through the tax office with the money to be used to help fund state hospitals. “The age factor is important because of its impact on the public health service,” Plevris told private Open TV on Sunday. A vaccination mandate was imposed for health care workers last year. And starting Feb 1, vaccination certificates for adults will expire after seven months unless the holder receives a booster shot. New infections sharply surged in early January, and have eased over the past week. The mandate for over-60s was announced in late December and, according to government data, some 41.5% of the 530,000 people targeted by the measure are now fully vaccinated. (AP)

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday said joint efforts are the only way to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic and called for fair distribution of vaccines and expedited inoculation drive globally. He also said that holding each other back or shifting blame would only lead to a needless delay in the response and also distract us from the main objective. In a special address on 'state of the world' on the first day of the week-long online Davos Agenda summit of the World Economic Forum, he said that humanity will certainly move on but the world needs to jointly defeat the pandemic. “A giant ship is brave enough to brave the storm. Pandemic is proving to be a protracted one. It impacts health and the economy. Holding each other back and shifting blames, will only shift our objectives,” he said. Favouring further opening up of the world economy and greater cooperation, he said, “We should remove barriers and not erect walls. We should open up and integrate further.” Jinping warned of serious negative spillovers if major economies slam on the breaks or make U-turns on their monetary policies. He also said the world needs to discard the cold war mentality and that confrontation will lead to disastrous consequences. We need to explore new drivers of economic growth to promote steady and robust global economic recovery, he added. The Chinese president said some developing countries have fallen back into poverty due to the pandemic while some developed countries are also facing hard times. “Developed nations need responsible economic policies, should control spillover effects of policies to avoid impacting developing countries,” he said while asserting that China will continue to open up and is committed to economic and market reforms. He also called for global rules on the digital economy and greater information sharing across the world. “The world is undergoing major changes, unseen in a century and how to beat the pandemic and build a post-COVID world are a common concern for people around the world,” he said while addressing the summit through video conferencing. The deadly virus, which was first reported in Chinese city Wuhan in late 2019, has so far seen over 32 crore confirmed cases globally with more than 55 lakh deaths. The international community has fought a tenacious battle against COVID-19 and the concerted efforts of the international community mean major progress has been made in the global fight against the pandemic, Jinping said. About 2,500 Delhi Police personnel have tested positive for COVID-19 since January 1 and 767 of them have recovered, an official said on Monday.
According to the latest data, since January 1, about 2,500 Delhi Police personnel from all ranks and units of the force tested positive for Covid.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Chinmoy Biswal who is also the spokesperson of Delhi Police had tested positive for the virus. He, however, has recovered and resumed work, a senior police officer said.
“Many of them are recouping well and resuming their duties on a daily basis,” the officer added.
“About 2,500 personnel have tested positive for Coronavirus since January 1 till date. Out of them, 767 infected personnel of the force have recovered and resumed their work,” said Biswal, Delhi Police PRO.
Meanwhile, a special camp is being organised for police personnel of all ranks to administer booster doses to eligible ones.
The strength of the Delhi Police force is over 80,000, police said.
According to an order issued earlier, all police personnel and their eligible family members who have not been vaccinated may be motivated to complete the vaccination process.
“Those who have not been vaccinated due to medical reasons may be encouraged to seek medical opinion again for the vaccination,” the order had said.
All police personnel may be motivated to take precaution dose of Covid vaccine and install and use of ‘Aarogya Setu' mobile application mandatorily.
Self-monitoring practice to be adopted by police personnel and any kind of illness may be reported without fail, to daily health monitoring officer, the order had added. (PTI)
Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mandi and the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) have identified phytochemicals in the petals of a Himalayan plant that could potentially be used to treat COVID-19 infection.
The research found that phytochemical-rich petals of Rhododendron arboreum found in the Himalayan region, locally called “Buransh” show antiviral activity and fight against the virus.
The findings of the research team have been recently published in the journal ‘Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics'.
According to the team, two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, the researchers are trying to understand the nature of the virus and discovering new ways to prevent the infection.
“While vaccination is one route to providing the body with the fighting power against the virus, there is a worldwide search for non-vaccine medicines that can prevent viral invasion of the human body. These medicines use chemicals that either bind to the receptors in our body cells and prevent the virus from entering them or act on the virus itself and prevent its replication inside our bodies, ” said Shyam Kumar Masakapalli, Associate Professor, IIT Mandi's School of Basic Science.
“Among the different types of therapeutic agents being studied, phytochemicals – chemicals derived from plants – are considered particularly promising because of their synergistic activity and natural source with fewer toxicity issues. We are hunting for promising molecules from the Himalayan flora using multi-disciplinary approaches,” Kumar said.
The petals of the Himalayan Buransh plant are consumed in various forms by the local population for its varied health benefits.
“The team scientifically tested the extracts containing various phytochemicals in it, with particular focus on antiviral activity. The researchers extracted the phytochemicals from the Buransh petals and performed biochemical assays and computational simulation studies to understand its antiviral properties,” Masakapalli said.
Ranjan Nanda, Translational Health Group, International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, said, “We have profiled and investigated the phytochemicals of Rhododendron arboreum petals sourced from Himalayan flora and have found it to be a promising candidate against the Covid virus”.
Hot water extracts from these petals were found to be rich in quinic acid and its derivatives. Molecular dynamics studies showed that these phytochemicals have two kinds of effects against the virus.
“The researchers also showed through experimental assays that non-toxic doses of the petal extracts can inhibit Covid infection in Vero E6 cells (cells derived from kidney of an African green monkey that are commonly used to study infectivity of virus and bacteria), without any adverse effects on the cells themselves,” he said.
According to the team, the findings support the urgent need for further scientific studies aimed at finding specific bioactive drug candidates from R. arboreum, in vivo and clinical trials against COVID-19.
The research team also plans to carry out additional studies to understand the precise mechanism of inhibition of COVID-19 replication by specific phytochemicals from Buransh petals.
Sujatha Sunil, Vector Borne Disease Group, ICGEB, said, “A combination of the phytochemical profiling, computer simulations and in vitro anti-viral assays showed that the extracts from the Buransh petals inhibited the replication of the COVID-19 virus in a dose-dependent manner.” (PTI)

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said that indulging in a blame game over the pandemic situation will not eradicate the coronavirus and it should be eliminated from the entire country.
His remarks came in response to Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij's statement that “increasing coronavirus cases in Delhi have affected the NCR (National Capital Region) and the infection rate has increased in Gurugram, Faridabad and Sonipat districts”.
Asked about Vij's remarks, Kejriwal said, “I won't indulge in blame game. It's not going to eradicate the disease. Wherever there is coronavirus in the country it should be eradicated.” He said the number of COVID-19 cases is reducing in Delhi and around 12,000-13,000 fresh cases are expected on Monday, down from over 18,000 cases recorded on Sunday.
The chief minister was speaking to reporters after flagging off the first electric bus of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) at its IP depot here.
He said 300 more electric buses will arrive in Delhi by April. In the next few years, around 2,000 electric buses will join the public transport fleet in the national capital, he added. (PTI)
A 26-year-old woman in China's capital Beijing who contracted the omicron strain of COVID-19 has drawn national attention on social media for her shopping trips.
The woman, who has not been identified by name, reportedly visited high-end shops in the city before showing symptoms of having the virus.
It wasn't known where or how she became infected and her present condition hasn't been made public.
The woman's case was widely discussed online and reflects the government's painstaking efforts to track down and isolate every virus case, along with identifying and testing anyone an infected person may have been in contact with.
The first reported case of the omicron variant has prompted stepped-up measures in Beijing, just weeks before it hosts the Winter Olympic Games.
More than 13,000 people and all places visited by the 26-year-old woman have been tested and her apartment complex and workplace sealed off.
Officials on Saturday said the woman lives and works in the city's northwestern district of Haidian, home to some of the country's top universities, and had no travel history outside of Beijing for the past two weeks.
No new cases were reported in Beijing on Monday, although the nearby city of Tianjin saw another 80 cases.
State media on Monday reported the capital, with its 20 million residents, was considering stronger restrictions on travel. All transit links with Tianjin have already been severed. International flights have been sharply reduced and domestic travelers have been barred if they transferred to a second location before arriving in Beijing.
The Olympics open on February 4, just days after the start of Lunar New Year celebrations. Athletes, officials, staff and journalists are required to enter a closed-loop bubble without outside contact and undergo daily testing.
As an additional precaution, Beijing will require travellers to take nucleic acid tests within 72 hours of entry starting January 22. Some schools in Beijing have also closed early and moved classes online ahead of the winter holidays.
Officials across the country also urged residents to stay in their cities for the new year, instead of traveling back to their hometowns.
Tourist sites, including sections of the Great Wall, have also closed amid China's “zero-COVID” policy that has seen millions of people placed under lockdowns.
The economic, logistical and psychological stresses resulting from that policy have become increasingly apparent, creating tension over how long the restrictions must remain in place.
Following three weeks of isolation, the ancient capital of Xi'an appeared to be turning a corner, with stay-at-home rules lifted on neighborhoods determined to be virus-free.
Roughly 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) southwest of Beijing, the city of Xi'an, which has a population of 13 million and counts as a major tourist site for its famed Terracotta Warriors, has reported over 2,000 infections since December last year. (AP)
