India will now begin its Republic Day celebrations from January 23 now, instead of January 24 to mark the birth anniversary of freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose. Several reports, quoting government sources, on Saturday indicated that move is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's focus on observing important aspects of India's history and culture.

Bose's birth anniversary is celebrated as "Parakram Divas" by the government and is a state holiday in West Bengal.

The government has already recognised some other dates to observe important events in the past. These include August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, October 31 (birth anniversary of Sardar Patel) as National Unity Day, November 26 as Constitution Day and recently announced December 26 as Veer Baal Divas as a tribute to the four sons of Guru Gobind Singh.
