The sitting Samajwadi Party MLA from Kairana, Nahid Hasan, who had filed his nomination papers on Friday for the upcoming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested on Saturday and sent to judicial custody by a local court for two weeks in connection with a case from February last year under the Gangsters Act.
Nahid Hasan and his mother, Tabassum Hasan, who is a former MP from Kairana, were named as accused in the case along with 38 others. Tabassum Hasan had got an anticipatory bail in the case. Police said that Nahid, who was “absconding”, had reached the Kairana court to surrender on Saturday afternoon, and the court sent him to 14 days in judicial custody.
SP chief Akhilesh Yadav said on Twitter: “FIRs on SP and allied partners, arrest of candidates and threats to the leaders of these parties are clear indications that the BJP has lost all hopes of winning in the upcoming elections.”
