An improvised explosive device (IED) was discovered inside an attended bag at East Delhi’s Ghazipur market on Friday, sending the security agencies into high alert. According to officials, some locals first discovered a suspicious iron box inside the bag today morning, and alerted the police.
A senior official said they first received a call at 10.19 am about the bag. “After receiving the call, a fire tender was sent to the spot and police officials also arrived. Officers found that it was an iron box and they also called the NSG’s bomb disposal squad,” an officer added.
Personnel of the Delhi Police Special Cell were also called in, apart from the dog squad.
According to officers, NSG’s bomb detection and disposal team picked up the IED and carried out a controlled explosion near the market. Traces of the device have been recovered for further examination.
