India reported 2,64,202 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, with the total tally of Omicron infections climbing to 5,753, up 4.83% since yesterday. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization approved two new Covid-19 treatments on Friday, growing the arsenal of tools along with vaccines to stave off severe illness and death from the virus. The news comes as Omicron cases fill hospitals around the world with the WHO predicting half of Europe will be infected by March. In their recommendation in British medical Journal the BMJ, WHO experts said arthritis drug baricitinib used with corticosteroids to treat severe or critical Covid patients led to better survival rates and reduced need for ventilators. Experts also recommended synthetic antibody treatment Sotrovimab for people with non-serious Covid at highest risk of hospitalisation, such as the elderly, people with immunodeficiencies or chronic diseases such as diabetes.

Pfizer says it applied for Japanese govt approval for oral COVID-19 drug
- Pfizer Inc said on Friday it applied for Japanese government approval for its oral COVID-19 treatment.
- Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said last month he spoke with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla to secure 2 million doses of Pfizer's antiviral pill.

China's Andon Health to supply at-home COVID-19 tests to U.S.
- China's Andon Health Co Ltd said on Friday it has signed a contract worth $1.28 billion with the U.S. Army Contracting Command to supply COVID-19 self-test kits.
- Andon Health's unit iHealth Labs Inc has agreed to provide at-home coronavirus antigen test kits that can serve 250 million people, the company said in a stock exchange filing.
- The U.S. Army Contracting Command signed the contract on behalf of the country's Department of Health and Human Services, Andon Health said.
Chile sees over 7,000 daily Covid-19 cases, a 7-month high
- Chile's Health Ministry has said it registered more than 7,000 Covid-19 cases in 24 hours, after detecting 7,291 infections in one day, the highest figure in seven months.
- The new cases pushed the country's total caseload to 1,849,465, the Ministry added on Thursday.
- On Thursday, 41 more patients died of causes related to the disease, bringing the pandemic death toll to 39,331, Xinhua news agency reported.

- Industry bodies — CII and Ficci — have suggested a graded highly-localised plan for Covid-impacted areas instead of state-wide strategy, which is linked to bed occupancy in hospitals as against the current system of restrictions kicking in when the case count goes up.
Mexican president says pandemic 'on way out' despite record infections
- Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said Thursday he believed the pandemic was "on the way out" because the Omicron variant was less severe, even as the country faces record infections from the highly contagious strain.
- Lopez Obrador drew on his own experience battling a second bout of Covid-19, saying he had experienced only mild symptoms similar to those of influenza.
- However World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Wednesday that while Omicron "causes less severe disease than Delta, it remains a dangerous virus -- particularly for those who are unvaccinated."
42% of eligible teens have got Covid-19 shots in first 11 days
- Over 3.14 crore adolescents — accounting for 42% of youngsters between 15-18 years of age — have received the first dose of Covid vaccines in about 11 days since rollout of the vaccination drive for this category on January 3.The government aims to cover around 80-85% of the estimated 7.40 crore youngsters in the 15-17 years age-group by January end.

Covid-19: New cases at 2.6 lakh, deaths cross 200 for second consecutive day
- Fresh Covid-19 cases in India rose 7% to nearly 2.64 lakh on Thursday, a day after a record rise of more than 50,000 had pushed the day's tally to 2.47 lakh. Deaths from the virus remained relatively low but were rising. With data from Tripura awaited at the time of writing, 218 fatalities were reported on Thursday, the second consecutive day of 200-plus deaths. The cumulative toll in the last seven days has nearly doubled to 1,096 from 562 in the preceding seven days.
