The Omicron-led third wave is upon us and India continues to see fresh spike in daily Covid cases. With 2.64 lakh cases reported today, India is witnessing the sharpest spike in the last 239 days. The number of active cases have also jumped to a frightening level of 12 lakh.
Major metros are in red zone. Even as the health experts have asked for more testing, the ICMR guidelines may prompt India to test less. Coupled with this are the Assembly Elections in five states including the most populous state Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, a latest study form the University of Bristol shows that the coronavirus loses as much as 90 per cent of its ability to infect new host the minute it leaves the patient’s respiratory system. In simple words, this means that if an infected individual breathes or speaks, the virus in her/his breath would have less transmissibility. This also means that face masks and social distancing would always work, no matter what. The researchers say that the moist environment of lungs and nasal cavity help the virus. But the moment it is in open air, it loses its ability to infect.
In other major news, the BMC has issued new guidelines for those using Rapid Antigen Test kits at home. From manufacturers, to suppliers to end users, the BMC has asked for details of such home testing kits to be submitted from time to time. Also, in case a person buys RAT kit from a medical store, the result of such test must be reported to the ICMR via mobile app. While the efficacy of such tests are still debatable, many feel, it would help in lessening the burden on the testing labs.
Amid spurt in fresh Coronavirus infections in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held a meeting with chief ministers of state/UT governments. He asked them to ensure minimal loss of livelihood and related economic activities. Rajasthan on Friday recorded 10,307 fresh COVID-19 cases and three more deaths, according to the health department. As many as 2,549 fresh cases were reported from Jaipur, 1,027 from Alwar, 801 from Jodhpur, 735 from Udaipur, 615 from Bikaner, 576 from Bharatpur and 388 from Hanumangarh, the health department said. Of the latest deaths, one each was reported from Dausa, Jodhpur and Udaipur. So far, 8,991 people have succumbed to COVID-19 in the state, it said. The number of active COVID-19 cases in Rajasthan stands at 52,773. As many as 3,096 more people have recovered from the viral disease, it said. PTI
Kerala on Friday registered 16,338 fresh COVID-19 cases, raising the state's caseload to 53,33,828, a government bulletin said. The southern state had reported 13,468 cases on Thursday. Kerala on Friday also reported 199 deaths that raised the total fatalities in the state to 50,568, according to the government release. Of the latest deaths, 20 were recorded over the last few days and 179 designated as COVID-19 deaths after receiving appeals based on the new guidelines of the Centre and the directions of the Supreme Court. With 3,848 more people recovering from the virus since Thursday, the total recoveries reached 52,14,862. – PTI

More than 75 per cent of those who succumbed to the novel coronavirus infection in the current wave in Delhi were unvaccinated, Health Minister Satyendra Jain said on Friday. He also said that the city is expected to record less than 25,000 coronavirus cases on Friday.
Delhi had on Thursday reported 28,867 COVID-19 cases, the sharpest single-day spike since the pandemic began, and 31 deaths, while the positivity rate surged to 29.21 per cent, according to the health department data. The risk of recession is looming for Germany after Europe's biggest economy shrank at the end of 2021 and as it faces a bumpy start to this year, with the rapid spread of COVID-19's omicron variant deterring people from shopping and travel and supply bottlenecks holding back manufacturers.
Output in Germany fell by between 0.5% and 1% in the fourth quarter, the state statistics agency Destatis said Friday.
Forecasts are also shaky for the first three months of 2022, and two straight quarters of falling output would leave Germany in recession, according to one commonly used definition.
Germany helps set the pace for the entire eurozone, the 19 European Union countries that use the euro currency.
Many German companies have suppliers or factories in other European countries, so Germany's business activity can boost growth for its neighbours.
For all of last year, the German economy grew 2.7%, rebounding from a plunge of 4.6% in 2020 when pandemic lockdowns were at their most severe.
Growth remains 2 percentage points below its pre-pandemic level and lags the estimated eurozone figure of 5%.
Complete statistics for the fourth quarter will be released on Jan. 28.

In view of the rise in the use of home test kits to detect coronavirus infection, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued new guidelines to manufacturers, suppliers and sellers of home antigen testing kits in the city.
In an order issued on Thursday, the civic body has directed people responsible for manufacturing, supplying and selling home antigen testing kits, to email certain details to the civic authorities and Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) in a prescribed format every day.
It is necessary to report the results of all COVID-19 tests carried out either using rapid antigen test kits or home test kits to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) by laboratories or individuals through mobile applications, the order stated.
The civic body further said that in some cases, results of home test kits have not been reported to the ICMR, causing the authorities to lose track of patients, which in turn leads to further spread of the infection.
“Hence, it is necessary to keep track of such persons to contain the spread of the virus,” the BMC order stated.
Under the new guidelines, manufacturers and distributors of home testing kits have been asked to furnish details about the number of kits sold to chemists and medical stores in Mumbai to the FDA commissioner and the civic body.
Chemists and medical stores have been directed to email details of test kits sold to customers in a prescribed format by 6 pm every day.
As per the guidelines, the FDA commissioner will monitor the distribution and sale of kits of all chemists and medical stores in Mumbai and ask them to inform customers to report the test results on the given app.
The order has also defined the role of the epidemiology cell and ward teams of the BMC.
The epidemiology cell will have to monitor the data received through email from manufacturers, distributors, chemists, pharmacy, medical stores and others sources, and it will forward the same to the concerned ward and medical officers of health for further action.
Ward teams will ensure that people upload their test results on the ICMR website or application and monitor the health of patients, the order stated. (PTI)
Refuting media reports on COVID-19 vaccine shortage in Maharashtra, the Health Ministry said the state had over 24 lakh unutilised doses of Covaxin and received an additional 6.35 lakh doses on Friday.
According to the media reports, the state government is unable to increase the pace of vaccination due to a shortage in vaccine availability.
“As per their weekly consumption data available on Co-WIN, the average consumption by Maharashtra for Covaxin to cover the eligible beneficiaries for 15-17 years and for precaution dose is almost 2.94 lakh doses per day. Therefore, the state has adequate vaccine doses for about 10 days to cover the eligible beneficiaries with Covaxin,” the ministry said in a statement.
“Furthermore, for Covishield, the state has 1.24 crore unutilised and balance doses available as on date. With an average consumption of 3.57 lakhs per day, this will sustain for more than 30 days for the beneficiaries to be vaccinated using the vaccine,” it said.
Hence, the media reports are not factually correct and do not reflect the correct picture of the available stock of balance and unutilised Covid vaccine doses with Maharashtra, the ministry said. (PTI)
Italian police have protested to the interior ministry after being sent pink health masks to wear on duty, saying the colour risked damaging their reputation. “We do not understand the reason behind the purchase of masks in a colour that would appear at first sight to be unsuitable for our administration,” the police union wrote in a letter to the interior ministry. “This purchase is puzzling,” the letter said, adding that two years into the COVID-19 health crisis it should be easy to purchase appropriate face masks. Cambodia on Friday began a fourth round of vaccinations against the coronavirus in response to the omicron variant, with high-risk groups among the first to receive the additional boosters. Front-line medical staff and members of the armed forces were among those lining up at hospitals and clinics. Government ministers, including Prime Minister Hun Sen, also received booster doses on Friday. Hun Sen has appealed to all Cambodian people to get fully vaccinated, including a booster, saying on his Facebook page that it is the only way to keep their families and communities safe from COVID-19. Meghalaya on Friday reported 189 new COVID-19 cases, which pushed the tally to 85,985, a senior official said. The toll remained unchanged at 1,490 with no new fatality recorded, Health Services Director Aman War said. Of the 189 new cases, 137 were detected in East Khasi Hills, 22 in West Garo Hills and 18 in Ri Bhoi district. Israel has administered a 4th vaccine dose to more than 500,000 people, the Health Ministry said Friday. Israel began administering second boosters to the most vulnerable late last month and later began offering them to everyone over 60. A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held interaction with chief ministers over the coronavirus situation, the NCP on Friday took a dig at him saying it was good that a lockdown was not announced this time unlike in the past when it was imposed “without taking people into confidence and without any consideration”. Speaking about a number of BJP leaders quitting the party in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the Assembly elections there, the NCP said that the saffron party's five-year-long “rule of arrogance” in that state was one of the reasons responsible for it. On Thursday, Modi held a virtual interaction with the chief ministers over the coronavirus situation in the country amid a surge in the infection cases due to its Omicron variant. As a standard practice, all life and health insurance companies require people to wait for a specific period with respect to certain ailments and diseases to gauge the risk before selling a policy. This condition of waiting period for people who have recovered from coronavirus infection will be applicable only for life insurance policies. Industry experts said the waiting period for individuals, who have recovered from coronavirus infection, in order to take a new insurance policy has been implemented against the backdrop of high mortality rate related to coronavirus infection. The union territory of Puducherry clocked 1,471 fresh coronavirus cases during the last 24 hours pushing the cumulative caseload to 1,35,337, a senior Health department official said on Friday. The test positivity rate was 28.47 per cent as against Thursday's 26.44 per cent. Director of Health and Family Welfare Services G Sriramulu said in a release that the 1,471 new cases were identified at the end of the examination of 5,167 samples and were spread over Puducherry (1,335), Karaikal (97), Mahe (25) and Yanam (14). Odisha on Friday recorded 10,273 new COVID-19 cases, 214 more than the previous day, with the tally rising to 11,11,879, a health department bulletin said. The death toll mounted to 8,476 as four more persons succumbed to the disease, the highest single-day COVID fatalities in more than two months, it said. The daily positivity rate rose to 13.57 per cent from 12.41 per cent the previous day, the bulletin said. At least 1,065 children were among the newly infected patients. Khurda district, which comprises the state capital Bhubaneswar, reported one-third of the fresh infections as 3,496 people were afflicted with the disease, the bulletin said. (PTI)

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday exuded confidence on tiding over the recent surge in COVID-19 cases perpetrated by the Omicron variant of the virus as the state government has ramped up its health infrastructure and put in place management strategies to deal with any situation. The chief minister said that the state government is focusing on inoculation and targeting to complete administering the second dose of vaccine to the eligible population by February 10, an official statement said. Updating the prime minister at a video conference on the state's preparedness to tackle the current situation, Sarma said the health infrastructure created in the state has made the government upbeat about tackling the pandemic. The chief minister said, “Assam is confident to deal with the third wave caused by Omicron infections. But at the same time, it is taking a cautious approach in strategising its COVID care management to keep the infection at a manageable level.” He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Rs 670 crore Emergency COVID Response Package (ECRP), which helped the state government to ramp up its health infrastructure to deal with the pandemic. Sarma said since the vaccine is the most potent tool to fight the infection, the Assam government has gone all out in inoculating the eligible people of the state. Assam has so far covered 95 per cent of the eligible population with the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 71 per cent with the second dose, he said. The state is also administering the precaution dose (booster dose) to frontline workers and senior citizens, along with conducting the inoculation drive for teenagers in the age bracket of 15-18 years. The statement said out of the active COVID-19 cases in the state, only seven per cent of patients required hospitalisation till Wednesday. State Health and Family Welfare Minister Keshab Mahanta, Chief Secretary Jishnu Baruah, Principal to the Chief Minister Samir Kumar Sinha, Principal Secretary, Health, Anurag Goel, NHM Mission Director Lakshamanan S, and others were present during the video conference, it added. The state's COVID-19 tally has increased to 6,38,288 with the detection of 3,238 new cases and three fatalities on Thursday, and the day's positivity rate is 7.87 per cent, a National Health Mission bulletin said. The active caseload in the state is currently 13,785, while the number of cured patients so far is 6,16,964 with the overall recovery rate at 96.66 per cent. While the number of new cases on Thursday decreased marginally by 36 compared to the previous day, the active caseload rose by 1,993. (PTI)
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday participated in a virtual meeting held by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to review the COVID-19 situation after a surge in cases in the country and spread of the Omicron variant. The state government separately said 94.5 per cent of the adult population in Gujarat has been fully vaccinated against coronavirus. “Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, health minister Rushikesh Patel and minister of state for health Nimisha Suthar participated in the meeting held by Modi,” a statement from the CM's office said. Senior officials like chief secretary Pankaj Kumar and health secretary Manoj Agarwal also attended the meeting, where the PM spoke about how to tackle the present wave of coronavirus, the statement said. The meeting also reviewed the ongoing coronavirus vaccination programme. Meanwhile, the state government said 94.5 per cent population aged 18 and above has been fully vaccinated against coronavirus in Gujarat. The percentage of people who have received the first dose of coronavirus vaccines stood at 98, it said in a separate statement. The statement said 57 per cent of teenagers in the age group of 15 to 18 years have been vaccinated in the state with the first dose after inoculation started for them from January 3. A large number of healthcare and frontline workers in Gujarat have also received precaution or booster dose which started from January 10, it added. (PTI)
A United Nations report said on Thursday that the deadly wave of COVID-19 Delta variant stole 240,000 lives in India between April and June in 2021 and disrupted economic recovery, and warned that “similar episodes” could take place in the near term. The flagship United Nations World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) 2022 report also said that with the highly transmissible Omicron variant of COVID-19 unleashing new waves of infections, the human and economic toll of the pandemic are projected to increase again. “In India, a deadly wave of infection with the Delta variant stole 240,000 lives between April and June and disrupted economic recovery. Similar episodes could take place in the near term,” said the report. “Without a coordinated and sustained global approach to contain COVID-19 that includes universal access to vaccines, the pandemic will continue to pose the greatest risk to an inclusive and sustainable recovery of the world economy,” Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs Liu Zhenmin said. As per the information by India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 1,54,61,39,465 vaccinations have been administered so far. The second wave of the COVID19 pandemic had wrecked havoc across India as the death toll increased exponentially and spike in infections burdened the healthcare infrastructure in the country. The country is now witnessing increasing number of cases of the Omicron variant that is soon overtaking the Delta variant of the coronavirus globally. The report noted that South Asia faces major downside risks that can strengthen headwinds in achieving the 2030 Agenda. “Relatively slow vaccination progress leaves the region vulnerable to new variants and recurrent outbreaks. Financial constraints and an inadequate global vaccine supply continue to drag down full recovery in some countries,” it said. As of early December 2021, Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan had less than 26 per cent of their populations fully vaccinated. By contrast, the fully vaccinated population is above 64 per cent in Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka, the report said. (PTI)
Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh tope on Thursday said the state has sought additional stocks of Covaxin for providing precautionary or booster dose to co-morbid people aged above 60, health and frontline workers. Tope, who participated in a virtual meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the prevailing COVID-19 situation in the country, later told reporters that the state has sought 40 lakh doses of Covaxin. As per the Centre's guidelines, the home-grown vaccine manufactured by Bharat Biotech is the only one which is to be administered to teenagers in the 15 to 18 age group. The minister said Maharashtra has also sought 50 lakh doses of Covishield for administering the precautionary dose. He said feedback from district authorities was that there was a shortage of Covaxin for the booster dose. Tope said the Centre should take steps to tackle vaccine hesitancy among people. The minister said pharmacies have been asked to keep a record of people purchasing coronavirus home testing kits and provide information about the same to government authorities. He said 4,000 swab samples have been taken for genomic sequencing so far in the state, out of which 1,300 were found infected with the Omicron variant and 2,700 with the Delta strain of coronavirus.
