Coronavirus Vaccine Registration, Coronavirus Omicron Variant Cases in India January 13 Highlights: India reported 2,47,417 fresh Coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, the highest in 236 days, taking its overall tally of Covid-19 cases to 3,63,17,927, which includes 5,488 cases of the Omicron variant, according to data from the Union Health Ministry on Thursday. The country witnessed 620 new Omicron cases, the highest so far, taking the total tally of such cases to 5,488, out of which 2,162 people have recovered or migrated so far. The active number of active cases in the country has increased to 11,17,531, the highest in 216 days, while the death toll has climbed to 4,85,035 with 380 fresh fatalities, the Health Ministry said. Maharashtra recorded the maximum number of 1,367 cases of Omicron variant followed by Rajasthan at 792, Delhi 549, Kerala 486 and Karnataka 479, as reported by PTI.

Spike in fresh Coronavirus infections continues in India with eight major states reporting high positivity rates and a sharp rise in daily caseload. The Union Health Ministry on Wednesday said Maharashtra, West Bengal, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Gujarat are emerging as states of concern due to the significant rise in new Covid-19 cases there. As many as 300 districts in the country are reporting weekly Covid case positivity of more than 5%, compared to 78 in the previous week. Though hospitalization is low so far despite Omicron surge, the Health Ministry said Coronavirus infections are spreading very fast and it urged people not to treat infection due to Omicron variant as the common cold and get vaccinated.

According to data, nearly 2 lakh fresh Coronavirus infections were reported from across the country on Wednesday, a big jump compared to the past few days. After dipping in Delhi and Mumbai, the daily case count has risen again on Wednesday. At 27,561, Delhi on Wednesday witnessed its second-highest single-day rise in new Covid-19 cases. Mumbai, too, reported a 40% spike in daily numbers. These numbers indicate it is still premature to read much into the recent slowdown in these cities. The sharp rise in Covid-19 deaths in the country is another concern.

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Assam CM confident of tiding over COVID surge in meeting with PM

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday exuded confidence on tiding over the recent surge in COVID-19 cases perpetrated by the Omicron variant of the virus as the state government has ramped up its health infrastructure and put in place management strategies to deal with any situation. The chief minister said that the state government is focusing on inoculation and targeting to complete administering the second dose of vaccine to the eligible population by February 10, an official statement said. Updating the prime minister at a video conference on the state's preparedness to tackle the current situation, Sarma said the health infrastructure created in the state has made the government upbeat about tackling the pandemic. The chief minister said, “Assam is confident to deal with the third wave caused by Omicron infections. But at the same time, it is taking a cautious approach in strategising its COVID care management to keep the infection at a manageable level.” He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Rs 670 crore Emergency COVID Response Package (ECRP), which helped the state government to ramp up its health infrastructure to deal with the pandemic. Sarma said since the vaccine is the most potent tool to fight the infection, the Assam government has gone all out in inoculating the eligible people of the state. Assam has so far covered 95 per cent of the eligible population with the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 71 per cent with the second dose, he said. The state is also administering the precaution dose (booster dose) to frontline workers and senior citizens, along with conducting the inoculation drive for teenagers in the age bracket of 15-18 years. The statement said out of the active COVID-19 cases in the state, only seven per cent of patients required hospitalisation till Wednesday. State Health and Family Welfare Minister Keshab Mahanta, Chief Secretary Jishnu Baruah, Principal to the Chief Minister Samir Kumar Sinha, Principal Secretary, Health, Anurag Goel, NHM Mission Director Lakshamanan S, and others were present during the video conference, it added. The state's COVID-19 tally has increased to 6,38,288 with the detection of 3,238 new cases and three fatalities on Thursday, and the day's positivity rate is 7.87 per cent, a National Health Mission bulletin said. Coronavirus Live Tracker: Deadly Delta wave stole 240,000 lives in India between April-June, ‘similar episodes’ could take place in near term, says UN report

A United Nations report said on Thursday that the deadly wave of COVID-19 Delta variant stole 240,000 lives in India between April and June in 2021 and disrupted economic recovery, and warned that “similar episodes” could take place in the near term. The flagship United Nations World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) 2022 report also said that with the highly transmissible Omicron variant of COVID-19 unleashing new waves of infections, the human and economic toll of the pandemic are projected to increase again. “In India, a deadly wave of infection with the Delta variant stole 240,000 lives between April and June and disrupted economic recovery. Similar episodes could take place in the near term,” said the report. “Without a coordinated and sustained global approach to contain COVID-19 that includes universal access to vaccines, the pandemic will continue to pose the greatest risk to an inclusive and sustainable recovery of the world economy,” Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs Liu Zhenmin said. As per the information by India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 1,54,61,39,465 vaccinations have been administered so far. The second wave of the COVID19 pandemic had wrecked havoc across India as the death toll increased exponentially and spike in infections burdened the healthcare infrastructure in the country. The country is now witnessing increasing number of cases of the Omicron variant that is soon overtaking the Delta variant of the coronavirus globally. The report noted that South Asia faces major downside risks that can strengthen headwinds in achieving the 2030 Agenda. “Relatively slow vaccination progress leaves the region vulnerable to new variants and recurrent outbreaks. Financial constraints and an inadequate global vaccine supply continue to drag down full recovery in some countries,” it said. As of early December 2021, Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan had less than 26 per cent of their populations fully vaccinated. By contrast, the fully vaccinated population is above 64 per cent in Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka, the report said. (PTI)

Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh tope on Thursday said the state has sought additional stocks of Covaxin for providing precautionary or booster dose to co-morbid people aged above 60, health and frontline workers. Tope, who participated in a virtual meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the prevailing COVID-19 situation in the country, later told reporters that the state has sought 40 lakh doses of Covaxin. As per the Centre's guidelines, the home-grown vaccine manufactured by Bharat Biotech is the only one which is to be administered to teenagers in the 15 to 18 age group. The minister said Maharashtra has also sought 50 lakh doses of Covishield for administering the precautionary dose. He said feedback from district authorities was that there was a shortage of Covaxin for the booster dose. Tope said the Centre should take steps to tackle vaccine hesitancy among people. The minister said pharmacies have been asked to keep a record of people purchasing coronavirus home testing kits and provide information about the same to government authorities. He said 4,000 swab samples have been taken for genomic sequencing so far in the state, out of which 1,300 were found infected with the Omicron variant and 2,700 with the Delta strain of coronavirus. Tope said the Centre should bring clarity in treatment protocol of coronavirus patients. (PTI)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: South Korea gets first supply of Pfizer’s COVID-19 pills

South Korea on Thursday received its first supply of Pfizer's antiviral COVID-19 pills to treat patients with mild or moderate symptoms. Health officials have described the Paxlovid pills as a potentially important tool to suppress hospitalizations and deaths, as the country braces for another possible surge in infections driven by the contagious omicron variant. South Korea's initial supply is enough to support the required five-day treatment courses for 21,000 people. Officials say another batch of pills, enough to provide the required five-day courses for 10,000 people, will come by the end of January. Workers were seen unloading containers of the pills from a plane at Incheon International Airport. The pills will be moved to a pharmaceutical warehouse in central South Korea before being administered to patients nationwide starting Friday. Because supplies of Paxlovid will be tight at the start amid global shortages, the pills will initially be available only to patients 65 years or older who are being treated at home or in shelters for mild or moderate symptoms. “In clinical trials, this drug has showed it could reduce the risk of hospitalizations or deaths by 88per cent, so we are hoping for a similar level of (real world) effectiveness,” said Lim Sook-young, a senior official in the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. South Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety is also reviewing whether to grant an emergency use authorization for Merck's antiviral COVID-19 pills, Molnupiravir. (AP)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: PM stresses on vaccination, localised measures to contain Covid without affecting livelihood

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday interacted with chief ministers over the COVID-19 situation in the country and stressed on local containment of the virus spread as well as ensuring minimum damage to livelihood while making strategies to deal with the surge in cases due to the Omicron variant. In his remarks at the meeting, the prime minister underlined the importance of vaccination and the need to further accelerate the 'Har Ghar Dastak' programme to achieve 100 per cent vaccination coverage. “We have vaccinated nearly three crore adolescents within 10 days and this shows India's potential and our preparedness to deal with this challenge,” Modi said. The prime minister said that vaccines made in India are proving their superiority all over the world. “It is a matter of pride for every Indian that today India has given the first dose to about 92 per cent of the adult population. The coverage of second dose has also reached around 70 per cent in the country,” he said. Modi said the central and state governments must continue with pre-emptive, pro-active and collective approach followed so far in fighting the pandemic. “The sooner we give precautionary dose to frontline workers and senior citizens, the stronger our healthcare system will become,” he said. Modi asserted that it is very important to safeguard the economy and livelihood of common people while framing Covid strategies. “There should be minimum damage to the livelihood of the common people, economic activities, and the momentum of the economy be maintained. It is very important to keep these things in mind while making any (containment) strategy,” Modi said. “So it would be better to focus more on local containment,” he added. Modi said 130 crore people of India will surely emerge victorious from the coronavirus pandemic with their collective efforts. The doubts that were there earlier about Omicron are slowly getting cleared now, he noted. The Omicron variant is infecting the general public many times faster than the earlier variants, he added. “We have to be alert, be careful, but we also have to take care that there should be no panic situation,” Modi said. “We have to see that in this festive season the alertness of the people and the administration does not fall short,” he added. The meeting came on a day India logged 2,47,417 new infections, the highest in 236 days, taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 3,63,17,927, which included 5,488 cases of the Omicron variant, according to the Union Health Ministry data. Home Minister Amit Shah and Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also attended the meeting. Fresh curbs have been imposed in various parts of the country to check the spread of the highly transmissible virus. Reviewing the Covid situation at a high-level meeting on Sunday, Modi had called for ensuring adequate health infrastructure at the district level and accelerating the vaccination drive for adolescents in mission mode. The precaution vaccination drive for healthcare and frontline workers, besides those over 60 years of age with comorbidities, has also started. Vaccination remains among the most effective means to fight Covid, Modi had said. The prime minister had said that a meeting with the chief ministers be convened to discuss state-specific scenarios, best practices and the public health response. (PTI)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Polish scientists find gene that doubles risk of serious COVID

Polish scientists have found a gene that they say more than doubles the risk of becoming severely ill with COVID-19, a discovery they hope could help doctors identify people who are most at risk from the disease. With vaccine hesitancy a major factor behind high coronavirus death rates in central and eastern Europe, researchers hope that identifying those at greatest risk will encourage them to get a shot and give them access to more intensive treatment options in case of an infection. “After more than a year and a half of work it was possible to identify a gene responsible for a predisposition to becoming seriously ill (with coronavirus),” said Health Minister Adam Niedzielski. “This means that in the future we will be able to… identify people with a predisposition to suffer seriously from COVID.” The researchers from the Medical University of Bialystok found that the gene was the fourth most important factor determining how seriously a person suffers from COVID-19, after age, weight and gender. The gene is present in around 14% of the Polish population, compared to 8-9% in Europe as a whole and 27% in India, said Marcin Moniuszko, the professor in charge of the project. Other studies have also shown the importance of genetic factors in how seriously COVID-19 develops. In November, British scientists said they had identified a version of a gene that may be associated with double the risk of lung failure from COVID-19. (Reuters)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Delhi sees 17-fold rise in number of containment zones since January 1

The number of containment zones in Delhi has seen an almost 17-fold rise from 1,243 zones on January 1 to 20,878 zones on January 12 amid rising coronavirus cases in the city. The increase in the number of containment zones has been proportional to the surge in infections in the national capital.

According to district officials, emphasis is being laid on mirco containment to arrest the spread of the infection. Normally, an area is designated as a containment zone where three or more COVID-19 cases in a family or in the neighbourhood are detected. It is a dynamic exercise conducted by district authorities seeing the situation and the number of infections, they said. “Every district magistrate (DM) has to assess the situation in the area. At times, even if there is a single case in a household, the DMs are declaring it a containment zone if there is high rate of infection in that area,” said a senior government official. He said declaring an area a containment zone depends on the assessment of CDMO, district magistrate and district surveillance officer. (PTI)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Amid Covid surge, Delhi govt cuts budgets for various PWD projects

The Delhi government has curtailed budget allocations for various PWD construction projects for 2021-22 to strengthen medical and healthcare facilities amid the ongoing Covid pandemic, according to officials. Coronavirus Live Tracker: Spell out strategy to treat those lacking facilities for home isolation, provide COVID test results soon: AIADMK

The opposition AIADMK on Thursday sought to know how the State government plans to treat the COVID-19 infected lacking facilities for home isolation and the poor who could not afford pulse oximeters to constantly monitor their oxygen levels. Also, it demanded that the DMK government take steps to establish genome sequencing laboratories in the districts to detect Omicron variants besides ensuring that the COVID-19 test results are provided soon to the people. Asking the government to spell out its strategy to treat those lacking adequate space for home isolation, leader of the opposition in the Assembly K Palaniswami said, “the people of Tamil Nadu are not clear on what kind of treatment would be given to those with co-morbidities contracting the infection.” In a statement, the former Chief Minister said the then AIADMK government launched concrete and concerted measures since the outbreak of the pandemic in Tamil Nadu on March 7, 2020, and contained the contagion. “Coronavirus infection remained under control until the announcement of the Assembly elections, as the then AIADMK government took a number of measures to contain the pandemic. People even felt the relief,” Palaniswami said. However, ever since the DMK government took the reins, the pandemic spread rapidly, he alleged.

“Tamil Nadu has been hit hard by the Coronavirus third wave now. The number of persons getting infected on December 31, 2021 was 1,155. It rose to 17,934 as of yesterday. Even the death toll is increasing,” he said. Against this backdrop, the Health and Family Welfare Minister Ma Subramanian on January 11 asked those with mild symptoms and those with oxygen concentration above 92 to isolate themselves at home for 6 to 7 days. He also assured action against private hospitals if they treated infected people in defiance of the government's announcement, Palaniswami claimed. “The then AIADMK government brought the infected people to hospitals by ambulance and discharged them only after ensuring they fully recovered. However, the Health Minister says it is sufficient if the infected gets isolated at home,” he said. Further, during the AIADMK rule, the government then increased the lab facilities across the State and by April 2021, 265 testing centres became operational in Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK co-coordinator said and urged the DMK government to establish genome sequencing labs in the districts to identify Omicron variants. Coronavirus Live Tracker: Russia sees sharp rise in virus cases amid new surge fears

Russia on Thursday recorded a sharp increase in coronavirus cases amid warnings by government officials that another surge in infections driven by the highly contagious omicron variant could be on its way. Russia's state coronavirus task force reported 21,155 new contagions on Thursday, 18% more than the previous day and 33% more than on Monday. The task force also recorded 740 new deaths. The new spike in infections comes after a steady decline of new cases over several weeks following an earlier record-setting surge. The omicron variant spreads even more easily than other coronavirus strains, and has already become dominant in many countries. It also more easily infects those who have been vaccinated or had previously been infected by prior versions of the virus. However, early studies show omicron is less likely to cause severe illness than the previous delta variant.

President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday call the virus situation in the country “very difficult” and urged the government to prepare. Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova promised to present some new response measures by the end of the week, without going into details. Anna Popova, head of Russia's public health agency Rospotrebnadzor, estimated on Tuesday that Russia might face six-figure daily infections. Russia's state coronavirus task force has registered over 10.7 million confirmed infections and 319,172 deaths since the start of the pandemic. Russia's state statistics agency, which user broader counting criteria, puts the death toll much higher, saying the overall number of virus-linked deaths between April 2020 and October 2021 was over 625,000. Russia had only one nationwide lockdown in 2020 and in October of the same year, many Russians were ordered to stay off work for a week amid a jump in infections and deaths. However, authorities have generally resisted shutting down businesses or imposing any tough restrictions. (AP)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Africa CDC in talks with Pfizer for COVID treatment pill

The director of Africa's Centers for Disease Control said the organisation is talking to Pfizer about bringing its COVID-19 treatment pill to the continent, which has just passed 10 million cases. The discussions come as Dr. John Nkengasong urges government and citizens not to relent on vaccinations and preventive measures as various countries come down from waves of increased infections from the omicron variant. “We are working hand in hand. … We are in close discussions with Pfizer to see what can be done to make the drugs available on the continent,” Nkengasong said Thursday in a press briefing. He said he hopes the treatment would help stressed health systems on the continent and would be part of an approach in 2022 that includes scaling up vaccines and expanding testing to help deal with the pandemic. At least 39 countries have reported the new variant and the average increase of cases in Africa is about 11 per cent, he said. He noted that vaccination rates are still not high enough, saying governments are struggling because there are such high numbers of people only getting vaccinated when there is a peak, which leads to a lot of hospitalisations and pressure on the systems that can be avoided. “My advice to the population on the continent is go get vaccinated,” he said. “If the population is not ready to go get the vaccines the governments have worked so hard to bring to the continent, I see why countries would not have an option other than to impose vaccine mandates.” The continent has received more than 660 million doses of vaccines, with only about 340 million doses administered. Africa has now recorded more than 10.1 million cases of coronavirus with 232,363 deaths across more than 50 countries, according to the Africa CDC. (AP)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: HC pulls up Delhi govt for “lethargy” in setting up Covid care centre at JNU

The Delhi High Court Thursday pulled up the Delhi Government for “inaction and lethargy” in making operational a COVID care centre at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus even though space has been earmarked for it. Justice Rekha Palli said it is the inaction on the part of Delhi government which has led to the centre not being operational till date and the court was unable to appreciate the inaction and lethargy on the part of the authorities. “Despite repeated orders passed by this court, it appears that the direction for setting up a COVID centre in JNU campus have not been followed in true letter and spirit. While the respondent no. 1 (JNU) had already earmarked a space inside the Sabarmati dormitory for setting up the centre, it is the inaction on the part of Delhi government which has led to the centre not being operational till date,” the court said. The court granted time to the counsel for Delhi government to get instructions as to why the directions passed by the court are not implemented and listed the matter for further hearing on January 19. The court was hearing a plea by JNU Teachers' Association and others for providing infrastructure and medical staff for a proposed COVID care centre at the varsity's campus. The counsel for the petitioners had earlier said that though the university administration has earmarked space in the Sabarmati Dormitory for setting up a COVID centre, doctors and requisite infrastructure are not available. On May 13, 2021, the court had directed that a COVID care centre be set up at JNU for immediate isolation of residents testing positive for coronavirus as the number of infections on the campus was “quite high”. The court had issued the order after it was told that a COVID Task Force and a COVID Response Team were already working inside the campus. On May 28, 2021, the JNU administration had told the court that a site for setting up the COVID centre had been identified and communicated to the concerned sub-divisional magistrate as well as the Delhi government. It had said that the Delhi government had to provide doctors, nursing staff and the required infrastructure to run the facility. In response, the city government had said that its health department was looking into the matter. In its petition filed during the second wave of the pandemic, JNU Teachers Association, JNU Students Association and two faculty members had claimed that the university administration did not respond to their repeated requests for setting up a COVID care facility. Coronavirus Live Tracker: France makes travel easier for vaccinated British tourists

France announced it was slightly easing COVID-19 protocols for vaccinated travellers from Britain, dropping a requirement for proof of an essential reason for the trip and for obligatory self-isolation upon arrival. The demand for a negative COVID-19 test, conducted 24 hours before a trip, remains in place, the French government added on Thursday. The measures will take effect as from Friday morning. France had tightened entry conditions for people coming from Britain in December, when the coronavirus Omicron variant was raging in the UK but had not yet hit France. The number of daily new infections has since reached record levels in both countries but seems to be past its peak in Britain, while that is not yet the case in France. The easing of the restrictions also comes as governments around the world try to balance keeping the COVID virus in check while ensuring that important parts of their economies, such as tourism and leisure, are not too badly hurt. “Given the prevalence of the Omicron variant both in France and in Britain, the government had decided to relax specific health control measures at borders that had been put in place in last December for vaccinated travellers coming from Britain,” the French Prime Minister's office said in a statement. “Those measures had been decided when the epidemic was spreading spectacularly in Britain while France was still relatively preserved in the face of the Omicron wave.” Non-vaccinated people coming from Britain will have to show proof of an essential reason for the trip and observe a strict 10-day quarantine at the place they stay at in France, which they also have to detail on a dedicated platform.
