Live: SC to set up panel to probe security breach during PM's Punjab visit

Live news updates: The Supreme Court said on Monday it will set up an independent committee to probe the security breach during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Punjab last week. The committee will be headed by a former judge of the top court, news reports said.

India reported 179,723 new cases of Covid-19 infections on Monday, the most since late May, health ministry data showed, taking the total to 35.71 million. Deaths rose by 146 to 483,936.

India has 4,033 cases of the Omicron variant of the virus, said the ministry.
