New Delhi: India recorded 1,79,723 new coronavirus infections, taking the country's total tally of COVID-19 cases to 3,57,07,727, while the active cases increased to 7,23,619, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on at 8 am.
The number of deaths climbed to 4,83,936 with 146 fresh fatalities, according to the data.
The active cases comprise 2.03 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 96.62 per cent, the ministry said.
India now has 4,033 cases of the new variant of coronavirus. Omicron has been reported in 27 states, with the most cases in Maharashtra with 1,216 cases, followed by Rajasthan with 529 infections. Out of the total Omicron cases reported so far,1,552 people have recovered or migrated.
Meanwhile, the administration of 'precaution dose' of COVID-19 vaccine to healthcare, frontline workers and immuno-compromised seniors will begin from today. The precaution dose can only be taken after nine months from the date of administration of the second dose of the vaccine.
The third dose will be the same vaccine the people have received for their first and second doses. There will be no mix and match, the Centre has said. It had also informed that the senior citizens with co-morbidities will not be required to produce a doctor's certificate or prescription at the time of administration of the precaution dose.

Arunachal Pradesh's COVID-19 tally rose to 55,558 on Monday as 37 more people tested positive for the infection, 22 less than the previous day, a senior health official said.

Coronavirus Updates: Mizoram logs 518 new COVID-19 cases, 3 fresh fatalities
Mizoram's COVID-19 tally soared to 1,46,045 on Monday as 518 more people tested positive for the infection, 385 less than the previous day, a health bulletin said.
The northeastern state's coronavirus death toll rose to 561 as three more patients, including a Myanmarese, succumbed to the infection, it said.
The single-day positivity rate stood at 19.23 per cent as the new cases were detected from 2,694 samples.
Champhai district reported the highest number of new cases at 216, followed by Aizawl (110) and Mamit (108), it said.

Odisha on Monday registered 4,829 new COVID-19 cases, marginally higher than the previous day, while no fatality was recorded for the third consecutive day, a health bulletin said.
As many as 448 children are among the new patients. The daily positivity rate declined to 6.5 per cent from 6.72 per cent on the previous day, it said.
The new cases jumped more than 11-fold from 424 infections a week ago. The state had logged 4,714 cases on Sunday, while 4,852 infections were registered on June 12 last year.
Khurda district, where Bhubaneswar is located, reported 993 cases, followed by 869 in Sundargarh, 644 in Sambalpur, 401 in Cuttack and 210 in Balasore, it said.

The COVID-19 tally of Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 8,150 on Monday as 175 more people tested positive for the infection, 89 more than the previous day, a health bulletin said.
A total of 129 new patients have travel history, while 46 infections were detected during contact tracing, it said.
The Union territory's coronavirus death toll remained unchanged at 129 as no fresh fatality was registered.
The archipelago now has 322 active cases, while 7,699 more people have been cured of the disease thus far, including 40 in the last 24 hours, the bulletin said.

Coronavirus Updates: Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao holds COVID-19 review meeting, urges people to follow protocols
In view of the surging COVID-19 cases, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao held a review meeting and urged people to follow COVID protocols issued by the government.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said, "People should not entertain any fear against COVID-19. Wear masks, sanitize your hand, maintain social distancing and follow COVID protocols."
Mr Rao asked people to take the COVID-19 vaccine and informed further that "the precaution doses will be given to frontline workers, health workers and people above 60 years of age from Monday."
The Chief Minister appealed to people not to move in groups especially during the Sankranti festival and try to remain in homes to celebrate taking precautions.

More than 55 per cent of people in Ayodhya are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, District Magistrate Nitish Kumar informed.
"93.61 per cent of Ayodhya inoculated with a first dose and more than 55 per cent with a second dose. The percentage staus are good, we are further trying to complete 100 per cent," he said.
The District Magistrate also said that political posters in the district will be removed within three days as the model code of conduct has come into effect with the Election Commission announcing polls dates for the state.
"COVID protocols have been instructed, there will be proper guidance and precautions during the voting. People will be provided with hand gloves, sanitiser and other precautionary measures," Mr Kumar said.
Deltacron, New Strain That Combines Delta, Omicron, Found In CyprusA strain of Covid-19 that combines delta and omicron was found in Cyprus, according to Leondios Kostrikis, professor of biological sciences at the University of Cyprus and head of the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Molecular Virology.
"There are currently omicron and delta co-infections and we found this strain that is a combination of these two," Kostrikis said in an interview with Sigma TV Friday. The discovery was named "deltacron" due to the identification of omicron-like genetic signatures within the delta genomes, he said.
Booster Doses For Frontline Workers, Seniors Begin TodayPrecautionary third doses of vaccines -- announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month -- will be given to health and frontline workers and immuno-compromised seniors starting today as Covid numbers spike in the country, driven by Omicron.
The health ministry has said there is no need to register for the precautionary vaccine doses. Those eligible can directly take an appointment or walk into any vaccination centre. There is no decision yet on booster doses for all adults.
