Coronavirus Live Tracker: Sweden takes more COVID measures as Omicron squeezes healthcare

Sweden will introduce more measures to stem the rising number of COVID cases and an increased pressure on the healthcare system, Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said on Monday. “The situation has deteriorated, without doubt. The level of infections in Sweden is at a historically high level,” Andersson told a news conference. The new measures include a work from home mandate where possible and a cap on the number of people allowed at public events. Restaurants will have to close at 2300 and guests will have to be seated and in groups no bigger than eight people. Adults are also being asked to limit social contacts indoors. The measures will be evaluated after two weeks, but are expected to be in place for at least four weeks. While COVID infections have soared, hitting a new record last week, the number of people hospitalized as a result remains well below the peaks encountered in previous waves. The number of new deaths has also been comparatively low. More than 1,000 patients are being treated in hospital for COVID and roughly 100 of them are in intensive care units. The strain on healthcare is being exacerbated by spread by other respiratory viruses and staff shortages, the National Board of Health and Welfare said. (Reuters)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Why is less severe Omicron COVID-19 variant still very dangerous

COVID-19 Omicron variant: Just when global vaccination drives had begun giving people an edge over the deadly coronavirus pandemic, the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 has led to another global surge in COVID-19 cases. New waves of the pandemic have started to impact countries across the world, including the US, Australia, and many European countries, and India is no exception to this. In fact, experts have stated that the rise in the number of coronavirus cases is already pointing at the beginning of a third wave in the country, which is worrisome especially due to the situation India witnessed in 2021 during the Delta wave. What adds more to the worry is the fact that not much is known about the variant, even as early studies point towards it being much milder than its predecessor Delta. | Read More

Coronavirus Live Tracker: China’s Tianjin on partial lockdown after omicron found

The numbers are small, but the major port of Tianjin may be facing China's first local outbreak of omicron of any size, less than a month before the Winter Olympics open in nearby Beijing.

State broadcaster CCTV said the government has divided Tianjin and its 14 million residents into three levels of restrictions, starting with lockdown areas where people are not allowed to leave their homes at all. In control areas, each household is allowed to have one family member leave to buy groceries every other day, while in prevention areas, people must remain inside their immediate neighborhoods.

Buses and trains from Tianjin to Beijing have been suspended and people are being told not to leave the city unless they have pressing business.

The city began mass testing of all its residents on Sunday after a cluster of 20 children and adults tested positive for COVID-19, including at least two with the omicron variant. Another 20 people tested positive on Sunday, bringing the total to 40. Officials said earlier that the virus has been circulating so the number of cases could rise.

China has stepped up its strict zero tolerance strategy in the runup to the Olympics, which open Feb. 4. The Chinese capital is 115 kilometers (70 miles) northwest of Tianjin and many people regularly travel back and forth by car or on a high-speed rail link that takes less than one hour. | Read More

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Delhi govt asks private hospitals, nursing homes to ensure staff follow COVID-19 protocol

The Delhi health department has directed all private hospitals and nursing homes to ensure that their health care staff treating non-Covid patients maintain coronavirus appropriate behaviour and are routinely checked for the infection. The health care workers showing symptoms of COVID-19 should not be allowed to work till their RTPCR report is negative, it said. The directions come in view of a surge in Covid cases in ICUs, dialysis units and wards of hospitals.
