Covid India Live News Updates: India reports 90,928 Covid cases and 325 deaths in 24 hours
India reported 90,928 Covid cases and 325 deaths in 24 hours on Thursday. 30 more resident doctors tested Covid positive in Sion Hospital, Mumbai. A total of 260 resident doctors in the state have been tested positive till now, said Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors. India on Wednesday reported its first death linked to the Omicron coronavirus variant in Rajasthan as new COVID-19 cases crossed 70,000 in what the Centre said was an "exponential rise" with the acceleration "steeper than ever" reflected by a higher R naught value than during the peak of the brutal second wave. As Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh joined a growing list of states to clamp night curfew in line with fresh curbs to deal with the expanding pandemic, the Centre said the upsurge in COVID cases--a 6.3 times rise in the last eight days--is happening in cities and the Omicron variant is the predominant circulating strain.

Gujarat: 6 killed in gas leak in Surat, reports ANI
- Six people have died and 20 others have been hospitalised in an incident of a gas leak at a company in Sachin GIDC area of Gujarat's Surat on Thursday.
- "Six people died and 20 others were admitted to the civil hospital after gas leakage at a company in Sachin GIDC area of Surat early morning today," the In-Charge Superintendent of the hospital, Dr Omkar Chaudhary informed.

COVID-19: Chhattisgarh Health Minister urges Centre to start genome sequencing facility in state
- In view of a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases, Chhattisgarh Health Minister TS Singh Deo on Wednesday urged Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya to give permission to start a genome sequencing facility in the state soon.
- "There is no facility for genome sequencing in Chhattisgarh. For this purpose, we have to send samples to Bhubaneswar (Odisha) to get reports. As a result, there becomes a delay in knowing the variants of coronavirus. I request you to give permission to start genome sequencing facility at AIIMS, Raipur," Deo wrote to Union Health Minister.
- He also urged Mandaviya to provide financial and technical assistance to start a genome sequencing facility at Raipur Medical College.
- Chattisgarh reported its first case of Omicron variant of coronavirus from Bilaspur district on Wednesday.

- The Grammy music awards and the renowned Sundance film festival fell victim Wednesday to Omicron's relentless march, as the variant's surge gathered pace in Europe.
- Citing "uncertainty" surrounding the new coronavirus variant, the Recording Academy indefinitely postponed the music awards, while Sundance organizers said the festival would go virtual with infection numbers reaching new highs.

- According to the latest CDC figures cases stateside are running at nearly 500,000 a day, with new hospitalizations rising.
- And in the UK, official data shows one in 15 people in England were infected with the virus in 2021's final week.

Daily cases reported on Wednesday saw an increase of 33,000 as compared to that reported on Tuesday. This is the third-highest single-day increase in cases.

- Novak Djokovic's chance to play for a 10th Australian Open title was thrown into limbo early Thursday when the country denied him entry and cancelled his visa because he failed to meet the requirements for an exemption to COVID-19 vaccination rules.
- The top-ranked Djokovic landed in Australia late Wednesday after receiving a medical exemption from the Victoria state government that would shield him from the strict vaccination rules in place for this year's first major tennis tournament, which begins Jan 17.
- But border authorities did not accept the exemption. The Australian Border Force issued a statement saying Djokovic failed to meet entry requirements.
