A homeless man living near the premises of Chikhli police station in Pimpri-Chinchwad allegedly set on fire four vehicles in its parking lot, damaged other vehicles and also pelted stones at the police station. One police constable was injured in the incident.
The incident took place at Chikhli police station around 1 am on Monday. Police launched a search for the man, who is in his early 20s, as he fled from the premises after the incident. Police suspect that he had resorted to arson and vandalism after someone reprimanded him for loitering around the premises.
The man initially set afire four vehicles, including a bike owned by a woman constable, and three vehicles from the impound lot. He also damaged a few more vehicles parked nearby.
“He also pelted stones at the police station… a woman constable was injured in the incident and some window glasses were damaged. When some personnel rushed to check what happened, he fled from the police station. We have identified him and have launched a search for him,” said Assistant Inspector
S P Deshmukh, who is probing the case.
Officials said that a few days, the man had tried to harass a woman constable. He had blocked her way to the police station and also verbally abused some other cops.
